Sonnets Here, In-House

Concerning My Sister Randi, Who Has Multiple Sclerosis

You've heard, perhaps, of "healing on demand":
The notion that the verse where "stripes" are cured
Means literally that all ills are banned
If we just feel sufficiently assured.

It's treated like an all-important code,
And salesman-preachers of prosperity
Apply it like the phony friends of Job,
Who prized rebuke above true charity.

Sick people have already got it rough!
They don't need someone saying with a smirk:
"It's your fault, for not claiming health enough!"
They know that magic thinking doesn't work.

God intervenes as He alone sees fit;
False guilt comes not from Him, but from the pit.

For A Long-Absent Member

Tom Adams, here known as The Dragon Knight,
Does not meet crises with hysteria.
He boldly plans, as promptly as he might,
To bring some blessings to his area.

When widespread virus-fear no longer haunts
The country, Tom is hoping to revive
The spirit of the Fairs of Renaissance,
And prove that chivalry still is alive.

Recruiting Oklahoma's theater folk,
He'll start a Festival of Camelot.
With drama, and from time to time a joke,
He'll bring King Arthur's legend forth to trot.

I'm confident he'll generate good times,
For it's his Merlin who now writes these lines.

Back in business.
Time for a sonnet about the Dune movie.

The character of Duncan Idaho
Got little screen time in the first two films.
But now, at last, this Warner Brothers show
Lets Duncan strut his stuff on sandy hills.

This man whose life is led by gratitude
To Leto, who saved him from slavery,
Is worthy to have his heroics viewed
As in the books beyond Books Two and Three.

The actor cast as Duncan guarantees
An audience that wants to see his clone.
Let there be one film showing how he frees
Mankind when Leto Two is overthrown.

Frank Herbert's gloomy message may shrink back
When Duncan is the Kwisatz Haderach.

WRITTEN AROUND EPIPHANY
>>> Note the use of assonance (meaning a near-rhyme) in the first and third verses.

Before most members here had come to birth,
An error, which concerned Incarnate Christ,
Beset the European realms of Earth:
It claimed Our Savior's mortal skin was white,

With eyes of blue, no less! This fantasy,
Though not reducing Jesus' Saviorship,
Too often gave excuse to bigotry,
Encouraging the hand which held the whip.

This being said, however, that false view
Has LONG since been corrected. Christ was brown.
This fact is known in Twenty Twenty-Two;
It isn't a surprise just lately found.

There is no "Gotcha" now; there's other things
For us to say about the King of Kings.

A Real-Time Sonnet, So To Speak

The Fairy Festival in Lafayette,
A Colorado town some distance north,
Renames the town just briefly, as "Lafet,"
In June, when costume players venture forth,

Amusing mothers, fathers, and their kids
At Fountain Plaza, south on Public Road.
A fairy queen calls us to show our gifts
Of music, dance, or clownish episode.

I, Copperfox, was in it from the first,
In twenty-twelve, performing as a bard.
Now that we've gotten past the Covid curse,
We'll make up for lost time, all working hard

To make the hearts of worried mortals light,
And bid them join imagination's flight.

Thank you for putting into verse a burden that is heavy on my heart, especially in these pandemic years. It makes me so sad for people to be guilted by a supposed lack of faith if their illness persists. As if the misery of being sick were not burden enough!

An Update on the Chivalrous Thomas

Tom Adams-- here, Sir Tom the Dragon Knight,
Has made a splash down Oklahoma way.
He studied the Korean style to fight,
Both empty-handed, and in swordsman play.

"Red Dragon of Durant" he now is named,
Referring to his middle-sized hometown.
With hard work and self-discipline, he gained
A literally planetary crown.

His Taekwondo society extends
To many countries, but for sharp technique,
While viewing his competitors as friends,
He left them all behind, and reached the peak

Of tournament success. He took the gold.
His mind is cool; his heart is never cold.

For "The Freak Sisters"

First, a phonetic note.

In order to maintain consistent poetic meter, when I say "Freak Sisters," think of the name as being spoken like:

freak SIS -ters

And NOT like:

FREAK sisters

Similarly with the name "Chuck NOR-ris."

I have occasion for some lines of cheer:
Freak Sisters have -- I mean, she has returned!
To choose a topic for the verse she's earned,
I'll check the clues available right here.

Chuck Norris! We're both fans of his, I see.
Freak Sisters, did you know that he's so quick,
As fast as someone else can break a brick,
Chuck will construct a whole brick factory?

Blood banks appreciate Chuck Norris well;
When there's great need, all blood types that there are
Will be supplied, with surplus, when the star
Comes by and donates them just one blood cell.

If Narnia had Chuck upon the scene,
He'd soon convert each pagan Calormene!

I used to have a copy of this printed off but lost it somewhere in the multiple moves over the past few years. I had to track this post down once more after returning to visit. It's been almost a decade, but this still brings a smile to my face when life gets a little tougher than usual. Thank you once more and always, CopperFox.

Thank you, sir!
Yes, it’s true, I won the ATA Martial Arts World Championship in two events this past July, making me a two-time world champion both unarmed and in swordplay.
I started taking lessons professionally about 4 and a half years ago, then earned my Blackbelt 3 years later. Martial arts changed my life and is one of the best things I’ve ever done, and I now have two jobs I love because of it.

Lovely to meet a fellow martial artist! This is amazing! I grew up surrounded by martial arts due to my father being a sensei. I earned my black belt in 2005, then was very on and off with the sport during high school and college due to family circumstances, and only recently began practicing again. Oh, how I've missed it! It really is life changing, and I love hearing that someone else has also had such a positive experience with the martial arts.

Congrats Sir Tom!

I practiced Taekwondo and Kenpo long ago, with some self-taught quarterstaff work (which has paid off against badly-behaved dogs). At my age, though, I am now morally entitled to SHOOT a threatening criminal.

Thank you! And That’s awesome! I’d love to practice with somebody of your background. I imagine there are some things you could teach me.

>>> An Impromptu Sonnet For Adversity

Did you know I am a survivalist?
That is, as far as my resources reach.
I've learned that ignorance is far from bliss,
As real-world circumstances grimly teach.

Few people think about utilities.
What if the water suddenly were gone?
What if a power failure let you freeze,
Or left you without light until the dawn?

We can't fix all, but let's prepare our camp;
Store drinking water in recycled jars.
Did you know you can buy a hand-cranked lamp?
That way, you'll have more light than just the stars.

If somehow God lets us off easily,
Our thrift may still aid some in poverty.
