After loving the musical for years, finally I am reading the novel unabridged. Wow -- so expansive!

What are some of your favorite scenes in Les Miserables that are NOT in the musical?

SPOILERS ahead -- warning --

I seem to recall a book scene where Valjean shows that he is indifferent to pain, by burning himself with a flame. And a scene where Marius tells Thenardier that the only reason Marius won't kill Thenardier is because Thenardier did have the dumb luck to rescue Marius' father at the Battle of Waterloo.

Copperfox, yes that red hot poker scene was shockingly impressive. And although I haven't made it to the scene you mention between Marius and Thénardier yet, I have heard about it before.

As for me I was really surprised that in the book version Eponine faces her father and his vicious gang down at Valjean and Cosette's home on the Rue Plumet by sheer courage and will power rather than screaming (although she does threaten them with screaming). It was a moving testimony to her love and strength.
