Sonnets Here, In-House

To A Waitress I Met

Petite, brunette, and beautiful of course,
You served efficiently, and let me talk.
I could have talked with you till I was hoarse;
But I'm a stranger -- mustn't seem to stalk.

If all men were polite who go to dine,
They'd all enjoy the pleasing company
Which you provide. I left there feeling fine,
Forgetting for awhile what stresses me.

Still, what unsettles me is all too real,
Affecting not just me, but also you.
The world these days is in a harsh ordeal,
Which only can be helped by what is true.

Therefore, I wish you more than happiness;
I wish you truth, for truth alone can bless.

To Robert and Laurie

Sonata's friends in Pueblo have their plate
Already full of troubles, for the wife,
By no fault of her own, must bear the fate
Of disabilities for all her life.

But when the fair in Santa Fe occurred,
Not only Robert, but his Laurie too,
Came with me and Sonata at a word,
And found no end of service they could do.

From treating insect stings, to teaching kids
To make bird feeders--big or little jobs--
They used compassion, energy and wits,
To give the patrons joy, against all odds.

They helped the whole cast through the roughest parts,
And left some of themselves in many hearts.

A Solitude Update

"You'll find someone," I'm always being told;
I wish that I could share their confidence.
Good women all seem taken, young, or cold;
So who might break this pattern of events?

I don't demand an air-brushed form and face;
I do demand a Christian as a mate.
She should accept a Colorado base,
For I have roots now in the sunburned state.

I'll tell you, I have little sympathy
For those who, having love, throw it away.
Not pointing fingers, I say generally:
Some loves are saved by trying one more day.

Work at it if you have it; as for me,
I really doubt there's any Number Three.

Uncle Joe, being single for the rest of your life wouldn't be a bad thing if it's the Lord's will. Singleness is not a thing that should depress - rather, it was the Apostle Paul's preferred modus operandi. If God wants you to marry, He'll make it clear in His timing.

You think I don't know Paul was celibate?
Or Jeremiah, also stuck unwed?
Adult for forty years, I estimate
That nearly _half_ that time, the life I've led

Was either with no wife, or with one, still
Deprived of many benefits thereof.
I've had no lack of single time to fill,
A veteran of living without love.

With Shannon, I in fact had cause to feel
I _had_ received the go-ahead from God;
Now disillusioned, while I wait to heal,
I won't be walking on the dreamer's cloud.

What God assigns to us as our life's load
May _not_ for now be happy--just ask Job.

Sopespian, I actually thank you for inspiring me to write another sonnet so quickly. It works for me kind of like "Song Sung Blue," where it says, "But when you turn the blues into a song, you sing them OUT again."

Not to double post, but...

I know you know the Apostle Paul
Did not find marriage in his call
I merely point it out to say
God used him greatly anyway.
We've heard it said that one with God
A majority defines
And in His Word He tells us He
Gives good things in His time.
Whether God intends for you to wed
Remains unseen as yet
But comes a day when all our trials
And toil we'll forget.
Then days without a partner here
Will seem as but a note
In a matchless symphony of life
That you and Jesus wrote.

Double posting doesn't bother me, O noble Telmarine. And that was pretty good. Still, I'd rather have the spiritual satisfactions, AND another wife. And I don't wish on anyone the losses I've borne.

For Uncle Joe and his Dad

It's hard to hear that one you love
Is drawing ever short'ning breath
It's hard when push has come to shove
To face impending death.

It's hard to know just what to say-
I can't just tell you, "'Twill be alright"
I've never been where you are today
In a problem unsolved by mere might.

It's hard to believe God understands
When everything is crashing down
It's hard to see His sovereign Hand
When storms are swirling all around.

It's hard to see the road ahead
When your windshield's covered with fear
It's hard to trust and just be led
By One invisible, however near.

It's hard to hear that one you love
Is drawing ever short'ning breath
But keep your faith in God above
He's the one who conquered death.

~ For Afton ~

If she weren't lovely in her own right, still
She'd score some points with me for keeping track
Of nature's loveliness in sea and hill,
Which evidently she tours by kayak.

She's visited Hawaii, I'm informed,
Then home again, where mountains tower near.
And when discouraged hearts need to be warmed,
She serves her neighbor as a volunteer.

Returning to the theme of human looks:
While beautiful, stuck up she'll never be.
But she has bragging rights for what she cooks;
I'd eat her flounder fast and eagerly.

Her attitude's the most attractive thing--
At least, until some day I hear her sing.

I really like that! Now I wonder if Afon will like it?:D
