Default Lent 2016

Thank you Timmy; threads merged

-----------------
(hmmm I'm not sure where the Lent thread went, so am opening this thread till it can be merged with the other.)

Lent this year runs from February 10 - March 24, 2016

What have been some of your thoughts and devotional highlights from this season so far?

The Lent thread (Lenten Season) is in the The Socratic Club column. I gave up Soda for Lent. Hope to lose 10 pounds.

Default When I survey the wondrous cross

Lent started this week, and while I am trying to find our lent thread from last year to revive, I thought I would open this thread temporarily so people can add their reflections as we look toward Good Friday and the Resurrection...

Let us encourage each other to use these weeks before Easter to grow in Jesus' ways and heart.

--------------------------------
During Lent this year I am reading through Simplify by Bill Hybels. It is challenging me to put God first before my todo lists, commitments, agendas and projects take over my day. It is giving me a practical way to recreate my calendar so that my schedule reflects my priorities and dreams and eternal values. And I'm just on chapter four!

Also for Lent each day I am folding an origami butterfly to represent a specific person or family or group that I want to be praying about that day. On Good Friday I plan to string up all my butterflies and make a festive hanging for Easter. This is photo of my butterfly collection as of yesterday:

The final idea I am incorporating in my preparations for Easter this year is to use my dogwalk times for extra conversation time with God each day. I'm not very skilled at hearing God's voice, but I want to move from compartmentalized prayer times here and there in my day to more of an ongoing conversation with the Lord all day long. At least that is my desire, to be open to His changing me during this Lenten time.

How is God at work in your lives this season?

I like what you're doing, and I'm encouraged by it. I have a short prayer I'm saying day and night for purity. I'm reading a Lenten meditation each day. Yes, it is a good reminder to make God my number one priority. I think also for me is receiving the Sacraments in the Catholic Church frequently: Reconciliation and Eucharist. I'd like to see considerable improvements in my prayer life, but yes, quality over quantity.

Sometimes the projects and commitments themselves ARE THE WAY in which we put God first, because the projects and commitments are taking us outside ourselves to HELP OTHERS whom God wants us to help.

People were asking for the Lent Thread to be found and reopened. Already 2 weeks into Lent.

Thanks Timmy for finding the perennial Lenten thread. I will merge my temporary "When I survey the wondrous cross" Lent thread with this one.

I only gave up soda again for Lent. It was simple and doable. I went to the Lent Repentance service. I should do the stations of the cross tomorrow. Eating fish sticks on Fridays.

Today I learned that "Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi," during Lent is the
"Lamb of God, who take away sins of world" song. Obviously I wasn't raised Catholic.
