Favorite Lotr Book Quotes!

Hey, serious Tolkien fans! Just thought since we have a favorite movie quote forrum (and Specter has already used up the best lines <_< ) let have a book quote forrum!

One of my favorites is the whole conversation between Eowyn and Faramir. Here it is :
"What do you look for, Eowyn?"
"Does not the Black Gate lie yonder?" "And must he not now be come thither? It is seven days since he road away."
"Seven days." "But think not ill of me, if I say to you: they have brought me both a joy and a pain that I never thought to know. Joy to see you; yet pain, because now the fear and doubt of this evil time are grown dark indeed. Eowyn, I would not have this world end now, or lose so soon what I have found."
"Lose what you have found, lord?" "I know not what in these days you have found that you could lose. But come, my friend, let us not speak of it! Let us not speak at all! I stand upon some dreadful brink, and it is utterly dark in the abyss before my feet, but whether there is any light behind me I cannot tell. For I cannot turn yet. I wait for some stroke of doom."
"Yes we wait for the stroke of doom."

My favorite Elf concern quote :) :

Two Towers:

"Let us hope that he did not pay too dearly for his boldness,"said Legolas. ''Come! Let us go on! The thought of those merry young folk driven like cattle burns my heart."

My favorite Elf humor quote: :D "Well, here is the strangest riddle that we have yet found!" exclaimed Legolas. "A bound prisoner escapes both from the Orcs and from the surrounding horsemen. Then he stops, while still in the open, and cuts his bonds with an orc-knife. But how and why? For if his legs were tied, how did he walk? And if his arms were tied, how did he use the knife? And if neither were tied, why did he cut the cords at all? Being pleased with his skill, he then sat down and quietly ate some waybread! That at least is enough to show that he was a hobbit, without the mallorn-leaf. After that, I suppose, he turned his arms into wings and flew away singing into the trees. It should be easy to find him: we only need wings ourselves!"

Not quite sure of the exact wording....

"So it must often be so, that when things are in danger, some one has to lose them, give them up so that others may keep them....and you will read things out of the Red Book and keep alive the memory of an Age that is gone, so that people will remember the Great Danger and so love their beloved land all the more." - Frodo to Sam before the Havens

That is just one of the many parts that brings me to tears.

Here's another sad part:
"Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows
The West Winf comes walking and about the walls it goes.
'What knows from the West, oh wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight?
Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight?'
'I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey.
I saw him walk in empty lands until he passed away.
Into the shadow of the North, I saw him then no more.
The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denathor.'
'Oh Boromir! From the high walls, westward I looked afar,
But you came not from empty lands where no men are.' "

"From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies, from the sandhills and the stones.
The wailing of the gulls it bears, and at the gates it moans.
'What news from the South, oh sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve?
Where now is Boromir the Fair, he tarries and I grieve.'
'Ask not of me where he doth dwell, so many bones there lie
One the white shores and the dark shores, under the stormy sky.
So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing sea
Ask the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me.'
'Oh Boromir, beyond the gate, the seaward road runs south
But you came not with the wailing gulls, from the grey Sea's mouth.' "

"From the Gate of Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls
And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls.
'What news from the North, oh mighty wind, do you bring to me today?
What news of Boromir the Bold, for he is long away.'
'Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry, there many foes he fought.
His cloven shield, his broken sword, they too the water brought.
His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest.
And Rouros, Golden Rouros Falls bore him upon its breast.'
'Oh Boromir, the Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze
To Rouros, Golden Rouros Falls until the end of days.' "

Could somebody look this up in the book and make sure I did it right? I wrote it from memory. That's one of my hobbies; memorizing Tolkien's poetry.

I'm sure you've got it right!! That's very impressive to write all that from memory!! I've been trying to put the songs to tunes, but I haven't gotten very far. :)

Leafy, my sister, loves memorizing, thanks to her I get LotR poetry stuck in my head, and can quote quite a few of the poems (though not as word perfect as she). Oh, and I've heard of a book that has melodies for all the Tolkien poetry, and it was approved by Tolkien himself, but I forget the name... I'll have to look it up again.

Oh that book! Yeah, I want that one really bad!!! We do have a tune to the Road Goes Ever On and On, thanks to the movie, but if there's a better tune in that book, I'll use it instead! Espescially if it's Tolkien approved!

"The Road goes ever on and on
Over rock and under tree
By caves where sun has never shone
By streams hat never find the Sea

Over snow by winter sown
And through the marry flowers of June
Over grass and over stone
And under mountains in the moon.

"The Road goes ever on and on
Under cloud and under star
But feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar

Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Turn at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known."

Ok, ok, so that's not a LOTR quote - it's from the Hobbit. But since we were on the subject of poetry and this song right here, I thought it best to recite it anyway! ;)
I know the rest of it (the parts from LOTR), but that would take to long to write.

I like memorizing LOTR poetry too! Here's one of my favorites:

When evening in the Shire was grey
His footsteps on the hill were heard
Before the dawn he went away
On journey long without a word.

From Wilderland to western hill
From northern waste to southren hill
Through dragon lair and hidden door
And darkling woods he walked at will

With dwarf and hobbit, elves and men
With mortal and immortal folk
With bird on bough and beast in den
In their own secret toungues he spoke.

A deadly sword, a healing hand
A back that bent beneath its load
A trumpet voice, a burning brand
A weary pilgrim on the road

A lord of wisdom throned he sat
Swift to anger, quick to laugh
An old man in a battered hat
Who leaned upon a thorny staff

Upon the bridge he stood alone
And fire and shadow both defied
His staff was broken on the stone
In Khazad Dum his wisdom died.

Oh yeah, I love that one! :D
Then there's: "The finest rockets ever seen, They burst in stars of blue and green, and after sunshine midnight showers came falling like a rain of flowers."

Upon the hearth the fire it red
Beneath the roof there is a bed
But not yet weary are our feet
Still round the corner we will meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone
Tree and flower and leaf and grass
Let them pass, let them pass
Hill and water under sky
Pass them by, pass the by.

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate
And though we pass them by today
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the moon and to the sun
Apple, thorn, and nut, and sloe
Let them go, let them go
Sand and stone and pool and dell
Fare thee well, fare thee well.

Home is behind, the world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow till the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight
The world behind and home ahead
We'll wander back to home and bed
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade
Away shall fade, away shall fade
Fire and lamp and meat and bread
And then to bed, and then to bed.

"And now to bed! And now to bed!" cried Pippin in a high voice.
I love that part!
