I had also always assumed the dragon was the lord. I find it interesting that other people here see it differently.

I have been re-reading VDT tonight, and enjoying it greatly. It is not likely that the first dragon was Lord Octesian, though he probably died on the island, and the gold band originally marked his grave. I feel Eutace was made into a dragon by Aslan's well, just as in HHB where Prince Rabadash was made into a donkey.

My reading of VotD tends to favor the interpretation that the dragon was Lord Octesian. I think that on a lot of the islands we see other lords falling prey to sins of greed (as in the pool at Deathwater Island) and wrath (fighting at Aslan's table) and paying the price for their spiritual failings. As such, I think that a similar fate probably befell the Lord Octesian. VotD really shows that even good people like Caspian can fall prey to greed and pride and wrath, so I think that Lord Octesian could have had a weakness for treasure that was revealed and punished on his journey to this particular island. I have no clear proof, just a gut instinct and a sense that it fits the pattern of what happened to several other lords who accompanied him on the journey.

Rose,
you have a good point about the vices and temptations in the path of the other lords. Still I hope it was not Octesian, because I hate to think that Eustace ATE Lord Octesian... !

My impression was that the dragon was meant to be Lord O. It's certainly the creepiest conclusion! However, the question being opened up at all makes me think perhaps there was more to it; perhaps it was just another dragon... Hmm.

That is rather disgusting to think about. Not a recommended diet, for sure.

For a dragon, another dragon, at least this kind in Narnia, is a good treat. I think the expected conclusion is that Lord Octesian turned into a dragon and died sixteen or so years later, possibly due to starvation.

Same here. That is why I just hope it was another dragon... That part was the first (and luckily the last) point in the books, that made me feel uncomfortable... <.<

I always imagined that the dragon was Lord Octesian, but I like how Lewis left it open in the end and didn't tie off that loose end. Lewis likes to rely on his reader's imaginations in his writing, and he gives his audience free reign to imagine the completion of several loose ends throughout the Narnia series. I think that is one of the characteristics of Lewis that makes him unique amongst his contemporaries. Not every question is answered, but it is enough...
