It depends. I admittedly like the Narnia movies better than the books. But for series like Harry Potter and Twilight, I think the books are WAY better (although, I thought the last HP movie was excellent).
Another example of where I like the movie better than the book was My Sister's Keeper. I could connect with the characters so much better when seeing the film. Also, I think they did a much better job conveying the themes of the story with how they dealt with the plot.
