My great aunt is in the hospital

My great aunt (my mother's aunt, who is only about ten years older than her) Kathy has been suffering with shingles for a few months now, and is also diabetic. She has been having dizzy spells, and this weekend, she suffered a fall in her home and was taken to the hospital with a fractured collarbone.
She is still in the hospital. Apparently a staph infection entered her system (she has some sores and has a habit of scratching them open).

I honestly don't have all of the details, my Mom was pretty upset when she was telling me, so I'm a little in the dark myself. I do know that she was still unconscious and on a breathing tube. One of my other great aunts, Jill, got ahold of us today to let us know that the infection has apparently spread to other parts of her body, some around her heart, and she has been moved to the university hospital in the city (a pretty long drive from where we live), which is not only larger, but more advanced, with access to different medications and treatments.

Aunt Jill told us Kathy would be having surgery this morning to try to remove some of the infection (no idea what exactly that means -- a lot of my problem right now is I don't really know what's going on!!) and that she would call or text us to let us know what was going on once she was out of surgery.

As I am typing this, it is 9:30 PM and we haven't heard anything from anybody.
We're not very hopeful -- quite frankly, everybody we've ever known who had to be transferred to the university hospital didn't make it -- but I'm trying to think of it as, "no news is good news" and think that maybe we haven't heard anything because they are trying a different medication before taking her into surgery. I honestly don't know. I wish my other aunt had contacted us.

Please pray for my aunt Kathy.

Thank you.

Liz

My Aunt Jill emailed my Mom the day after I made this post.

Aunt Kathy was in surgery for six hours, during which time they removed a few of her ribs and part of the collarbone.

That afternoon, Aunt Jill sent us another update to tell us that there is no more sign of infection, which was great, and while she was weak and still on a breathing tube, she seemed to be doing better.

Last week, they decided they were going to put her on a six week round of antibiotics to remove some infection in her spine rather than doing surgery, but today, they found an abscess in her ear. I don't know if that means surgery or not. They're supposed to do a CAT scan and Aunt Jill is supposed to let us know as soon as they have some results.

We're all nervous, because similar infections have taken other family members who were also diabetic, but we're trying to stay hopeful that they will be able to remove the infection and she'll recover. After the surgery is finished, she will probably have to have at least six months of rehabilitation.

Thank you, as always, for your prayers!!

Aunt Jill texted us about half an hour ago. Aunt Kathy was in surgery for six hours and the doctors say it went very well!!

Aunt Jill arranged to have the hospital's therapy dog brought down to visit Aunt Kathy. Kathy loves dogs, and hasn't been able to see her own since being hospitalized (her other sister is taking care of them), and seeing the therapy dog really raised her spirits. I know often, with this sort of thing, a lot depends on the patient's attitude, so I see this as a good sign!
Thank you for the prayers!

That's great! It's really cool that your aunt's hospital has its own therapy dog. :)

Yesterday, we heard that she is doing much better and getting stronger. She is healing, and sometimes she has like, hot and cold flashes, which gets annoying for her (she's still weak enough that she has to call somebody in to either cover her up or remove the covers), but she is doing very well. She is now strong enough to hold a spoon and eat. Thank you, as always, for any prayers!!

Wonderful! I pray that she continues to make good progress. :)

She is eating more solids, if they are chopped finely enough (like ground meat with some gravy), so that's good! Looks like she will probably still be in the hospital through the holidays, though. We've been sending her cards to cheer her up and may try to take a trip up to visit her soon.

Thanks so much for updating us on your Aunt Kathy's progress. Praying from complete protection from infection, and that the abscess will respond well to the antibiotics, and that her spirits would continue to be "up."
