City takeover? Did your library use to be private?

We keep some of the black magic books in the ready reference section to avoid having all of ours stolen. (Some of the books in the ready reference section are really important; others are just really dumb. Like the one titled Free Money.)

Unfortunately weeding is a sore word around my library at the moment--our evil director had us do a slightly insane weeding project in which the nonfiction collection was, literally, cut in half. She thought it was too big and should only fit on one floor. Needless to say, the community freaked out when they saw all the empty shelves. (Ways to get people unnecessarily mad at you if you are a library director--weed a ton, do it all at once, and throw some of the books into a dumpster. If your director wants to be fired any time soon, I suggest that she try all of the above....)
My student teaching experience was more Blackboard Jungle, too. It had its moments. Like when a student told another student, in front of me, that his test in another class had been so difficult that he had to text his brother for the answers.

Ah, shelf reading. The job volunteers are most needed for--which is also the job that volunteers are almost never willing to do.

My reference adventure of the week was the person who came in for numerology books, which had been stolen--then horoscope books, which had been stolen--and then something else, which had been stolen…. I told my supervisor, and he said that it didn't really matter, as that patron would probably have stolen them too! :p
Oh, that's basically what I got my undergrad in, too--social studies education. I like teaching but got fed up with the educational system, so halfway through I decided to go into libraries after I graduated. Fortunately I was able to get a part-time library job during grad school that led to my current full-time job (they didn't have to train me much, which they liked). Hopefully the same thing will happen for you.

We also have a part-time teen services person who is basically in the same place as you so far as school is concerned. She wants to go into museum work after she graduates, though, instead of libraries.

My first really memorable question from a patron was when someone called over the phone to ask how to cut a star fruit. I never would have thought of calling a library to find that out, but apparently some people do. :p
I felt that way also. I'm friends with some members on Facebook, and some of them I was trying to think, "Okay, who exactly are you on TDL?" lol. I feel like asking them makes me look silly....
I've got an MLS; my second master's will be in history. I do reference and interlibrary loan (our library system is small--in a larger library, those two areas would be separate). Reference is what I'm interested in long-term. Yep, my library system is an absolute nightmare. Unfortunately, our board seems to be one of the few groups of people not aware of the fact.

Which department of the library are you in? It's a public library, I'm assuming?
I did European History this year at school, and I did enjoy the short part that we did of medieval history. I also enjoyed the Italian Renaissance.

I love skype. I use it all the time.
That's so cool! I really want to go to Germany, see my friend and really look at all the historical places.

One of my favorite historical periods was WWII, but I like the social aspects of it.

Ya, the system is pretty slow... but... if it means I get to speak to friends, I'll live.
Oh I don't know... just didn't know if you went to college right after HS. I thought about taking a gap year, but I felt that I just needed to hop right into school.
I didn't have to take any loans out this year.

So did you do something before you started school?
I chose my college for the reason of keeping debt to a minimum, because I have the same dream. I want to own my home, so I can have a family. But I want to make sure I'm doing something I love before I settle down.
