Teens these days...
I don't like them.I don't like what they do.I don't like how think.Period.
They will do anything to be 'cool' and popular...even if it means smoking pot, or cigarettes. It also includes violence, which makes them look stupid when they try and beat up the 'new kid'.If a gang is around, they will join it.They think its 'cool'.
How are these things 'cool'?
Not all teens are like this, but i know alot of them that are.

I don't want to be popular at my school or be a part of a 'gang'. I just want to have friends.

At my school you dont have to do those things to become popular. Popularity isnt really a big issue at my school, however, i am pretty popular. :D

NO DUH! I saw your pic...
No, my school is all popularity, I'm not popular because I'm smart and creative, and creative people don't always fit in cuz we aren't really like "normal"...

Popularity is a huge thing at my school. People are always mean to me. Someone actually punched me once, just to show off to their friends!
But then he got detention :D

All teens are different, and there are lots of really stellar young people who do none of the things above.
Conforming to the crowd is very comforting for teens, because it does not put them in a position of being alone, or being closely scrutinized by others. There is comfort in being an anonymous person who goes along with the crowd.
But some kids recognize, it's far better to be true to yourself, and if that means you stand out from the crowd, then that's okay.

Wise words inkspot. :)
Even though I had the privilege of going to a private Christian high school, it still didn't mean anything in the way of people forming cliques and the like. Just because it's Christian didn't mean a thing, lol.
For myself, I didn't want to be part of "this" or "that," but just wanted to be a friend wherever I could be. And I generally kept to myself, but always enjoyed the company of others. Be yourself, and enjoy life while you may, and enjoy such friends as you are blessed to have!

personally i think its better to stand out and be yourself with accouple of close friends rather than fit in with a group and not be happy with who you are people at my school say that im annoying and that im weird but them saying that isnt gonna influence me to cange myself for some people who dont like me anyway.

Yeah, well everyone learned to leave me alone since sixth grade. My locker was by one of the "popular" girls locker, so they were always standing around mine, you can't talk nicley, or they ignore you, so i am mean about it the second time, but I do say it nicley the first time...I've never gotten punched...never ever.

I'm homeschooled so :p But I did goto a chirstian school. It wasn't bad with the whole "popullarity" thing, instead it was like, we were all freinds.

Madman, you can't generalize. You can't say "all teens sell out for popularity". You can't say "all teens smoke, pot or tobacco". A lot of teens are decent people.

im so shocked right now!!!
How can there be a popularity contest at your schools? I dont get it!! At my school, its just whoever is nicer and sweeter is most popular. Popularity isnt a big thing. its just you and your friends. Thats it. I mean, yeah, there are times when people are mean and cruel but once your a junior or a senior at high school, like i am now, there isnt much of a big deal.

Yeah well, not everyone is caring like that.
According to some of the people i know around here, shooting someone is "Gangster".If you hurt someone, your "The Beast".
i have to say, im a pretty decent person..

I dont agree with you, not all teens want to be "cool" some just be themselves and dont care what others think of them which is good. Im 15 years old and i for one arent the type of teen that like alot of people i know party all the time, drink, and all that stuff that in my books arent very good.
I do party but not with alcohol ect. Alot of people stick with their friends and dont start gangs, well where i live in Canada anyway.
Some people want to feel accepted with others that are the same age, so they join the wrong crowd do wrong things, so they can feel "in" or cool" ect.
Not just teens think they need to be "cool" to fit in, i know atlot of older people like adult age who do things to fit it or do things they think will help them fit in. Not just teenagers.

It's OK, Madman. I understand how you feel. It's been a long time since I was a teenager, but I do remember at the time thinking how dumb it was the majority of students at my high school all liked the exact same music and watched the exact same TV shows, and dressed pretty much all alike. (Especially because at the time disco was king, and it all seemed so vapid! It pervaded the way people dressed and even what was on TV ... it we weird, and awful.)
It was kind of refreshing to get into college and find people who dressed and talked and acted all different ways, and rarely did anyone act like the differences were any big deal.
Teenagers just need to band together for a sense of identity, and then usually they grow up a little and realize the value of their own identity, and they can let go of the group one. It will happen for the kids in your school, too.
