I am reading this new book series called The Wheel of Time. I'm still on the first book, but it seems like a really good series. Just wondering if anybody else has heard of it.

Ya, I'm suppost to be studying an exam right now ;) but after my exams are done (MON I'LL BE DONE GR 10! W()()T W()()T! NO MORE PYSICS!) I'll be able to read the books. I'm borrowing them from a friend (though they look like they are about to fall apart) but from what I'm reading right now its really good, and I don't like that many books :)

Yep, you will spend quite a bit of time reading them. I finished them off during the beginning of my stay in germany. So i finished them all in about 8 months or so. I'm a busy person and they are large books. I tell you RJ is quite gifted. His multiple culture universe and his knack for his portrayals of women is well quite a delight and funny. HA ha ha ha ha

Completely - he's is most def my fave authour. The way he can bring about revleations in the books so that you sit and think "flippin 'eck, i werent expectin that!" Awww - man its great!!

Im a slow reader so it took me about 5 years to read the first ten books. A REALLY slow reader......

tgraveline
06-25-2005, 12:36 PM
ha ha ha ha. Just wait till you get to the whole quasilove thing. Awesomely funny and weird. But i must say that perrin was my fav in the beggining, but by the end i'm a mat fan to the end. I just want to see whats up with this chick in the next book.

Wheel of Time. It just sounds cool by the title!

Sojourner
06-25-2005, 12:53 PM
It rocks T_F if you read it I am sure you will at least like it.

holyboy
06-25-2005, 02:13 PM
When I first read the beginning of the first book, I never thought that Perrin was going to be a main character, so I kind of brushed him off. Now I regret that...but I have to say my fav character is..oh, I can't decide! Nynaeve and Moirane are a great combo always trying to one up eachother. But Mat is Mat...maybe if i read a bit more I'll be able to decide :D

Sojourner
06-25-2005, 02:15 PM
I have to say that Mat is the best, but you know Perrin is cool.

tgraveline
06-25-2005, 02:15 PM
yep yep, Lan is the man too by the way and you will understand rand a bit more as time goes on, but seriously so much happens and so many things change its hard to tell what are the best moments.

tg

Sojourner
06-25-2005, 02:17 PM
Rand however is my Favorite character, so dark yet at times you can see the innocence

waterhogboy
06-25-2005, 03:12 PM
Nyneave rocks!!!! She is by far the best.... SO funny!

I hate Rand - he's like harry potter. Stop being so depressed and grow up! The other guys are just as bad.

I also like Aes Sedai - theyre just so mainpulative and huffy - its great!!!

The thing I find amusing is the way theres so many names that all sound the same - Moirraine, Mirelle, Morana, Merillile, Maighdin, Morgase, Moghedien, Merian... I'm sure there are others that I havent thought of - I get em all mixed up!!!!

tgraveline
06-25-2005, 03:14 PM
yeah, believe me you end up just having to learn them all by heart then like with people of a different color, all look the same. ha ha ha. Ok, just a joke, i really am not racist. Love yall.

tg

waterhogboy
06-25-2005, 03:22 PM
Watch out tg - you'll get yourself locked up! Oh no wait - thats right - the American legal system doesnt lock people whove committed crimes away!!! Sorry - I forgot. :D

Yeh - they should make a book simply with characters names and information about them so you can remember them when they come back in after a long absence.

tgraveline
06-25-2005, 03:33 PM
no kidding. like when you don't hear from perrin in forever, then its mat. I almost went insane during those months of my life.

tg

Sojourner
06-25-2005, 03:39 PM
You both know that they akready have sveral books like that. My friend in the states owns 2 of them.

And stop hashing on Rand it is not his fault he has another guy living in his brain.

tgraveline
06-25-2005, 03:41 PM
lol, you only know that becuase you started in the middle of the series though, lol.

tg

PS so who thinks rand is going to die?

oh i will feel bad for the girls, but i will have to swoop in on them myself then, lol. All of them sound to be quite hot. Though i think whats her name um, shoot, i've forgotten, its the one Min is it? The one that can see peoples auras. She would be the most fun to hang out with i think though.

tg

She annoys me a bit - she sounds like a man. Id go for Aviendha - I like a girl with a nice healthy tan. Nyneave sounds nicest!!! I want her! Or a girl called Elyd in A New Spring. The only imperfection in her appearence (as good old RJ puts it) is 'an overlarge bosom'!!! Oh well - we all have to make sacrifices.... :(

Sojourner
06-25-2005, 03:51 PM
Lol I think I would have to comfort all of them at once. ;)

tgraveline

tg

06-25-2005, 04:27 PM
ermmmmmm....... 7 - Crown of Swords.

Sojourner
06-25-2005, 06:47 PM
I have only read 7 but I love it...Mat and the Queen rock all those games.

Padded walls.....hmm that would be a rockin forum name!!!!

tgraveline
06-25-2005, 08:52 PM
lol, maybe i can get that in there somewhere. Maybe change the name of land of duffers to padded walls. lol

tg

Yes the queen taking advantage of her strong mat was quite funny. I felt bad for the man though, wanting to be a good guy for the most part and just doing his stuff without interference and all. Shame he was well not his own man anymore, lol.

waterhogboy
06-26-2005, 08:23 AM
Yes but - we all know who he ends up with...

Well I do. I think its a great storyline - RJ has taken a woman who you would never expect Mat to like, but he will do eventually.

Sojourner
06-26-2005, 12:03 PM
No I don't know who he ends up with and you will tell me or I will hold this thread hostage with inane babbling

Johan 72109

I've got to admit it. I dislike Wheel of Time with a passion. I dislike Robert Jordan's style of writing. Indeed, whenever I get a chance to do so, I will debate with my friend as to it's various merits and demerits, much to the disgust of all around us... hehe... Not that I'm sad or anything...
So said friend has invited me to air my views on this thread, to allow all of you a fair chance to gang up on me and obliterate my opinions...
However, I will, rather perversely, be joining in on other parts of the thread, as I DO have a lot of respect for the novels and the world they're set in...
So just a warning there... hehehe...

And I'd live in Amador... though none of 'em seem very nice places to live... especially with the whole 'End of the Age' thing going on...

waterhogboy
07-04-2005, 11:00 AM
Yeh - I said he should post his views...... but you dont need to listen to them. :) I mean, would you listen to a guy who eats chalk and likes to chase his own tail???? Exactly...... 'he knows nothing' (said in Manuel from Fawlty Towers style!)

Johan 72109

Hmm, i think i would be more of a shoot what are the travelling people called? whatever, one of them. Starts with an R i think rogue? nah, that ain't it. Oh well, i can't remember, one of you will though.

I heard from a friend that The Wheel of Time was coming out with a TV series. I just wanted to know if anyone else has heard about this. And if so, who is making it, and when will it air?

tgraveline
07-04-2005, 10:09 PM
Really? I have not heard of such rumors, though i do know of a computer game based on the novels. That is already made i believe. Now a tv show, that is something to think about. As well, the movies would have to be quite large to show the scope of such a series. If the money was there, it could be quite neat indeed. Though of course the right cast and the right director would be needed.

tg

holyboy
07-04-2005, 10:12 PM
I think the movies would be too long to be able to do them all, what with all the charactor development and the various storylines going on at the same time, it would be hard to do a movie properly. I think thats why they chose to do a TV series. and this video game; I knew this would make a great game from when I first read it. What kind of game is it suppose to be?

Johan 72109
07-05-2005, 11:34 AM
TV Series...
Hmm... it COULD work... but the amount of work needed to stop it turning cheesy would be... horrendous...
Mind you, the first few books ain't THAT bad... it's later on that they go all crappy...

waterhogboy
07-05-2005, 01:26 PM
It would never work - how on earth would you get to know all thwe characters!! Theyd have to change the plots loads and that would be awful.

Johan 72109
07-05-2005, 02:20 PM
Hmm... true...
But a TV series of the first book? That might work... It'd have to be fairly long, but it'd be possible.
A film however... you're absolutely correct. I've seen the film version of Dune, which sucks a horrendous amount. I've also seen the series, which, while it has A LOT of problems, which is bound to happen in book-to-screen translations, it is very close to the book, and the feel of the book.

But on the whole though... I don't think things should be translated from book to film. Books are so much better.

holyboy
07-05-2005, 04:39 PM
But on the whole though... I don't think things should be translated from book to film. Books are so much better.

I like it when they create a book-to-screen version of anything because it gets the regular people who never read books interested in the books, get people intreseted in the wonderful masterpieces of humankind. And I know this will happen with the Narnia books!

tgraveline
07-05-2005, 06:53 PM
the only problem with that is now when i read harry potter after i saw the movies first i picture the characters i saw first. So i'm happy with having read all of them so it will be interesting to see some of the new characters and all. See how they fit with my imagination and everything.

We will have to see though. I've always thougth that the new jedi order series would make for a kickin tv show.

For those who are Wheel of Time fanatics and don't know this yet, Book 11 of the series, entitled "Knife of Dreams" will be out Oct 15. The cover of the book is below. Do you think this is a good cover? What do you think will happen in the 11th book? (Remeber, if you are going to spoil another book, notify us with a **WARNING SPOILER ALERT!!** or something like that. Thanks :D)

Hmmmm........ book 10 ended horribly - i hope its sorted out quickly in this one!!

I think on the front its perrin, berelayn and two of the others from that storyline - what do you guys think............ wait - you can olny answer that if youve read to book 10!

tgraveline
07-08-2005, 11:16 PM
Ha ha, i have not really thought much of it, but i have always thought that the covers were terrible in this series. The artwork makes it look cheesy, but the books kick arse. So yeah, now i know the name and cover and i knew it was october, just not when.

tg

PS so thanks man

waterhogboy
07-09-2005, 08:13 AM
Well - I'm not sure about in America, but they stopped doing those covers after book 7 in England. Now they have posh, swanky covers that are just black with the 'Wheel of Time' symbol on, in a different colour for each book. I think it was to try and disassociate the books from the traditional geeky fantasy literature stigma...

Johan 72109
07-09-2005, 08:26 AM
I actually always was quite fond of the original book covers... I especially liked the way they drew up soldiers, all in their 17th century style armour despite the series being set in an age without gunpowder or anything like that... One of the few quirks in the series I enjoyed.
The front cover is probably Perrin, Berelain and Gaul, and... erm... someone else... maybe the leader of Berelain's guard or something? (Hehe, I know I haven't read book 10, but I still thought I should answer...) Of course, the Berelain thing's tricky to tell... the number of women described in the series as being beautiful and having black hair, you'd think that 90% of the people west of the Aiel Waste were like that... ;)

So far I've read the first book and it was really good, but my parents hardly ever take me to the library so by the time I got the second book it had been a month since I read the first one and I forgot it all. So now I have to get the first and second one from the library, but I guess thats a good thing because apart from haveing a bad memory I'm a very fast reader and start hyperventilating if I can't get something to read.

I'm kidding! - and I'm certainly in no position to mock. Anyway, I'm glad you've finally had the pleasure of starting the new book- hope it lives up to expectation. I'm still on number 2, so my future is uncertain... will I be a sceptical Johan? Or an ardent WHB?....

Yeah, mat is the man ain't he. I'm like almost 400 pages into the story myself. So i'm probably catching up to you now. So cool stuff and Yes, i have to get to about 550 pages i think till mat's story takes up again. Yeah, he's the only thing worth reading. I just got to a chapter where rand's story picks up again.

tg

PS Perrin needs to become a man again

I used to always love Rand's story until the third book. Then he became boring for me. "I can do everything. I have to be alone. No one shall control me!" It kinda got old.

All I can say is GO MAT! W()()T W()()T!

tgraveline
12-29-2005, 01:37 AM
Wow, it seems that most people like Mat the most as the books come along. Thats the trend i see at least when it comes to guys. Women of course like mat, but they also like the girl characters, but i still stand by the fact that i think that Jordan hates woman, ha ha.

I've just finished the third book, and I can see what you mean about Rand- he's becoming so involved with the whole 'I will not go mad, I will not be a pawn' thing that he's no longer easy to... like, I guess. Still, you know, fair's fair- his life isn't exactly a laugh a minute. I'm still routing for Lan and Nyneave- I love those two. And Loial! he's so great.

Anyway- I love the books. But I now have to start doing reading for college and it's killing me. I could just pick up the fourth one and find out what happens next.... but no, I must restrain myself. :p

waterhogboy
01-03-2006, 10:59 AM
RAND IS BORING!!!!!!! Every book his storyline is:

*sit in a palace
*talk to Min
*meet some Nobles
*talk to Lews Therin
*fight some pointless battle
*return to palace to continue sitting, murmumring and disturbing people....

How fun!!! Yes Perrin does need to become a man - he too annoys me. People who rock in book 11 though are - Mat, Nyneave and the person who I cant give away cos it spoils the storyline but who is concerned with the Tower of Genghi, Eelfin and Aelfin and Thom and his letter, and even though they're not 'physically' in the book I think they will be after Min's comment about them..............

........... hopefully tg will know who I mean!?!?!?

tgraveline
01-03-2006, 01:18 PM
I'm pretty sure i know who you mean. I just know though that they dont' truly find out yet in this book or not and it has to be in the next one, which sucks to have to wait so long again.

I wanted to be geeky and run and sit next to her and have a good old chinwag. But I was a cool, respected 17 year old Loiner - so I didnt! I strutted to the back and sat with my feet on the backward facing seats - oh yeh!

These are great books that are not boring but are sadly ending in 2008 with the release of the 12th book. *sigh*

I got Holyboy into the series. Are you still on the fifth or sixth book? =P

Rand gets a bit more boring by the 11th book, but what's going on around him is pretty interesting. I can't say I really like the whole three-women thing, though. Perrin needs to be a bit more interesting, too.

I hear Robert Jordan is sick and might die, and that he might not finish the series so that could be why he's limited himself to 12 books.
Or that could be hearsay, I am not an expert on the subject, lol. 2000 pages though? That'll be like the size of those old-fashioned family Bibles that are hardcover and have pictures of Jesus with little children in them.

03-15-2006, 07:22 PM
I think there is already a prequel- at least, there is one about how Lan and Moirane Sedai met. I have just handed in my portfolio, and have rewarded myself by starting the fourth one. I can't bear it though- I spend so much time worrying that something terrible is going to happen to/with/near/because of Rand. Still, that's the way he keeps us going. And yes, I think it's imperative for my mental health that we refute these rumours of his death! (and of course, there is the aspect of it in which we should hope it for his own sake!)

Aes Sedai or just awful I think. They think they know everything and whats best for everyone else. Like the woman of today, ha ha, I keed, I keed. Not really, but at the same time I see a lot of the different woman in Jordan's book as classification of different female types we have these days. Its quite interesting.

tg

Sam

lol, I'm not sure many women would thank you for the comparison. I reckon I'd be green, partly because of a terrible habit of regular crushes on people, but also because I sort of disapprove of the 'everyone else is secondary to my future as Aes Sedai' thing, which the greens have slightly less. 's probably why I like Min and Nynaeve best of the female characters. Thus far... but who knows what may happen?... (queue mysterious music.)

lol, thanks Rosy. Not sure I have the staying power, but I'll let you know how it goes... I will watch the contest with interest.

I have a question for y'all. It seems to me that there's a lot of 'women. they're crazy. No point trying to understand them.' and 'men. they're crazy. No point trying to understand them,' stuff going on. Now, do any of the characters ever start understanding one another? because I feel that sometimes Robert Jordan has a slightly stereotypical attitude to male/female relations!

rosymole
03-26-2006, 03:19 PM
It's because it's all so true!!!
No matter what context you put the male/female relationship in it's always the saem 'oh I wonder what their thinking?', and 'oh soandso would handle this so much better than me', with all the other frustrations of , from my humble opinion only, the boys of this world..give them a sword and a few magic powers and I'd still be confused!

Sam
03-27-2006, 11:28 AM

Tsubasa
03-27-2006, 11:32 AM
The relationships in WoT are a little strange - they basically come out of nowhere. I mean, unless you have the feeling that these two characters will get together because you think they'd be nice together/they need a partner/whatever, a couple is together before you even realized there might be something between them. I mean, I never thought Rand would get together with some of his...yeah, and Egwene and...

Other times it seems as if someone was introduced/reintroduced for the sole purpose of being a character's partner, and then had a plot develop around them. o.o

Either way, the whole relationship thing confused me greatly.

On the ACTUAL topic, I think Perrin, Mat, and Rand went a little too far in the "person x knows more about women than me" thing. I mean, practically every chapter in some books... and the women always complain about how stupid their men are, or wool-headed or whatever. Is that why they spend more time with each other?

Yo! I actually finished this book a couple weeks ago. I must say it got much cooler duruing the last couple hundred pages or so with the whole thing with *SPOILERS* Mat and Tuon, and Perrin and Faile.

Rand is still sort of out of the picture and not much was seen in this book of him. Maybe thats why I liked this one a little bit more. I just hope book 12 will finish it all. I'm just worried because Robert Jordan is going through therapy for his condition. I can't remember what it is called, but he looks like a kimo patient (sp?). So, the situation is that he may not live to finish the series, but he says he plans on doing it and is doing some pretty radical and innovative therapies to try and attack this sickness.

You MUST carry on reading (might be best to start from the beginning again if it was 20 years ago!!!).

It does get very slow during books 4-6. I didn't enjoy it much then, but from 7 onwards its thrilling!!! Its a proper 'stick-at-it' kinda book.

I was wondering, would people mind if we started proper discussions in this thread. I ask only because, with only me and timmy who are up to date, i ddnt want people to see spoilers. We will obviously mark in big ***SPOILER*** whenever we say one, but would peeps like rosy mind???

I'm sure Moiraine isn't dead anyway - it just didn't seem to fit that she would pop her clogs, and if it had really happened mor of a deal would have been made of it rather than falling of a cart and disappearing or whatever it was..

Alos..the Aes Sedai who's No.2 in the tower now Siuan thingy has been booted out is possibly one of the Forsaken, or something equally scary

And a preidction of sorts..Padan Fain will end up fighting the super tall thingy without any eyes who lives near the dark ones prison..

**Spoilers**

If that made no sense, worry not- i understood it all!

Sorry Sir...

But yeh, I think Moirraine is def coming back, becuase if you remember we were told that Min saw something about Moirraine helping Rand near the end, but everyone thought she must have seen it wrong when Moirraine died. But of course, Min has never been wrong....

Also - what do you think the deal with Olivia is??

You are joking right? I stopped reading them about 7 years ago with like book 6 or something, but I know who she is. She was like a MAIN character, in the first book it was kind of her fault that everything got started.

Do you mean Olivia? Shes the really old domani that was released when Rand battled the Seanchan. Mins viewingd say she will 'help Rand die'.

tgraveline

Ah yes, the seanchan girl that says she is sworn to him and what not. She was rarely in this book along with Rand, thats why I barely remember.

If she helps him die after he has destroyed the dark one, I will not mind. We have known for a long time that Rand will die sooner or later. I think that after all the things he's been through, it would be kind to let him die. To let him rest.

waterhogboy

True - he's annoying as well, so it wouldn't upset me that much ;D

tgraveline
07-14-2006, 01:19 PM
Yeah, what would be hardcore is if she helps by killing him with only the help that the seanchan can offer, and as it is, it looks to be that Tuon and Mat will possibly be together in running it or something. Who knows, Mat might be apart of that as well.

tg

waterhogboy

I think for definite. I think Mat and Tuon will be the thing that unites Randland and Seanchan for hte Last Battle.

Do you think book 12 will be called The Last Battle or Tarmon Gaidin (sp?) or be given a completely different name?

tgraveline
07-20-2006, 06:58 PM
Something completely different. Second, we don't know this is the last book, and still we don't know if he is healthy enough to write it. Though I suppose we could go to dragonmount.com and find out if he is doing alright and is able to write.

I'm rereading them at the moment and on the 5th.

I've thought that too George. It seems like Jordan has taken myths and stories from everywhere and created something out of them. I think it works really well though. Its almost as if the characters know similar stories to us, but then the stories become real - not in the fake way of a fairytale - but in a real life sort of sense. Its really great.

*SPOILERS FROM BOOK 4 ONWARD - DO NOT READ ON IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW!!!*

I've had a thought since rereading about Lord Luc in Shadow Rising, and the suggestion that he is Slayer. In the Wolf Dream he is pictured as a Malkieri Lord much like Lan, but it seems almost certain that he is infact Lord Luc who is auburn haired and very different looking. Now, this has made me think, could Lord Luc be Tigraine's brother!? He went up to the Borderlands after Tigraine ran off, and so would have come into contact with Malkieri and perhaps thought highly of them - hence is desire to look like them in Tel'Aran Rhiod. Also, we read that someone who looked 'nearly identical' to Tigraine killed Rand's father in the Aiel Waste - whuch would suggest that Tigraine's brother had done so, which in turn suggests he was starting to turn evil!?? What does anyone think...

I'm a member of that library now, and i got the first book (the eye of the world (not sure in English)), and started it, but i had to return it, because there were other things that i had to read first and i didn't have time to finish it, i only read a small part, it was quite nice, really exciting, but i got this i-don't-know-how-to-call-it-feeling while i was reading, and i think i have to read further to see why that is, and whether it's positive or not.

btw: welcome back, it's been a while since i've seen you around :)

I'm afraid there's been some sad news. Robert Jordan the author of the series has died! He'd been suffering from an illness and it finally took him. It's a shame he never got to see the end of his book series.

Yeah, I read that today as well. Its a bummer. Though I hear he did finish the 12th book, but some think that even if that doesn't finish the series, that they will hire others to finish it for him as too many people are invested in the series to not get an ending.

Yeh, they've got like a team of writers on it. Jordan said that the last book wouldn't tie up all loose ends so there were gonna be more sequels after which I think will all be written too.

I wonder if there will be a noticeable change in style though...

I was very upset to hear about RJ's death..and just after i'd finished book 11 too!
Even though i haven't shown my face around here very much in these past months i thought i'd make a brief show..this was one of the first places i heard about the series so it seemed right.

Re the end of the series i've also heard that book 12 will be out but the publishing ate will be extended by quite a while- apparentl RJ was pretty diligent and kept writing for as long as he could, and gave all the necessary plot details to his wife and cousin so they can finish off what he started.

hope you guys are all well.xx i'll try not to leave it so long next time!

So, are they worth a read? I could use some more books – I'm running out.

waterhogboy
03-10-2008, 09:01 PM
They're really nothing like Lord of the Rings!! There is one similarity which is between descriptions of Black Riders and Myrdraal but that's pretty much it apart from things like their being an Old Tongue - but lotr can't keep dibs on that!!! There's no elves or dwarves or hobbits. No dragons or demons or orcs or goblins. There is a dark lord but he's not really in it. The story has no parallel to lotr at all. It's debatably set in our world (though this is almost believed by no one - exept me!!)

I reall recommend reading them. They're slightly more adult reading than lotr but the only thing you need to watch out for is violence and very slight reference to things.

Dernhelm
03-10-2008, 09:04 PM
Hm. I'll see if I can get hold of them. (after reading Grimms fairy tales, violence, at least, usually isn't a problem ;))

waterhogboy

Dernhelm, the 1st book has 2 parts to it- From the Two Rivers and To the Great Blight < I think they're called that
The books are great...I read until 11....Rand is VERY annoying though...

PS:I heard Robert Jordan is dead but he outlined the plot for the 12th book and somebody else is writing it. Is that true?

Rand is annoying and continues to be but the focus lessons on him throughout the book and you read all about the other cooler characters so it's ok.

I'm about halfway through the first book – and I have to say, in spite of its flaws, it is a fun book. The pacing is not the best, and there are a lot of clichés, and the feminism is awful! But all of these (except the feminism :() are easy to correct in my head, so I really am enjoying the book. Lloyd Alexander and Robert Jordan are equally bad at names – very Tolkienesque, but they only look nice; they sound dreadful. ;) Neither wrote great literature, but both are fun. (But really, what is this thing about girls on adventures having names that begin with E, and include a w? Lloyd Alexander: Eilonwy, Robert Jordan: Egwene. :p J. R. R. Tolkien: Éowyn. Am I imagining things?)

To be fair, I probably would be less critical if I had read the book before reading things like: The Fantasy Novelist's Exam (http://www.rinkworks.com/fnovel/). It's funny, although the 'bad guy who is the father of the hero' comes from Star Wars, not Tolkien or Lewis.

I'll go finish the book now. :D

Pacing is quite a big problem, but bear in mind this is a twelve book long series, and the world Jordan creates is so rich, it's worth plodding through!!

The feminism is there I see more to contrast the masculism (if that's a worse), one thing Jordan does well is depict opposing views with little bias, so you'll find people throughout the books, none of whom are evil, but who all believe their ways and beliefs are right and so conflict with the main characters (who are only good cos we read from their point of view). In this way te feminism is characteristic of the feminine characters - and there is a whole reason as to why the world is so much more feminist than ours... which you will slowly discover...

The name thign is very true. But there is some intention I think. There are names you will meet throughout the series; Artur Paendrag (Arthur Pendragon), Gawyn (Gawain), Galad (Galahad), Egwene (Gwinevere). Clearly there's references intended here.

Dernhelm
03-20-2008, 07:55 PM
The pacing improves immensely in the second half; I must admit, the first half was actually a slight effort to read. :p The second is far more interesting. :D Artur Paendrag, Gawyn, Galad, and Elayne are definitely references - I'm not sure about Egwene (unless there is some plot parallel later in the series?) - it's certainly possible. Also, Morgawse (can't remember the spelling in the book, but the Queen).

I can't help thinking the Ogair (sp?) are rather like Ents :p You know, s l o w, talking to trees, even a 'hasty' one, like Quickbeam. But . . . then, I guess everyone borrows. Tolkien borrowed from much older sources. Why doesn't that strike people the same way?

waterhogboy
03-25-2008, 02:43 PM

You're right, and actually, you'll see later that they're even more like Ents. I just see them as different cos they're not trees - really I think of the Nym more like Ents - that's almost a direct parallel.

There may be some parallels, but I think if you keep reading on, you'll realise those parallels are actually very small parts of the plotline and the big themes and the overarching plotlines are really quite original.

So you gonna keep reading them!!! They get better after book 1 i think. They move from typical fantasy novel to epic in book 2 - so much is begun to be introduced - the detail of the world is expanded dramatically, where Jordan really begins to bring the books into their own. My favourite game is trying to parallel the cultures of the books with cultures n our world (though often they're like a mix of two or even three) eg. Carhien has hints of Western Europe in their architecture and personality, but their dress and appearance is quite Japanese. Similarly, the Amadicians remind me very much of the Early Founding Fathers of the Americas while Andor is very English. You'll see more as you read. It's so exciting!!!!
