View Full Version : Which White Witch do you like better?

I was just wondering what actor you think played the White Witch the best, Tilda Swinton, or the other lady in the BBC version.
Which White Witch do you like better and is more like the one that CS Lewis wrote about?
My mom and oldest brother say the BBC Witch because she was more dramatic, she's an amazing actoress, she was eviler, and because she was louder.
But I think the WW played by Tilda Swinton is better, because we can relate to her better, she's not so evil and not so evil looking. its kinda like how evil can sometimes look good and be disguised.
What do you all think? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

My family hasn't watched BBC in like....INFINITY! kidding...we watched a long time ago. Dad really thinks Tilda did a SUPERB job in WaldenMedia Narnia. He really like the scene where Edmund says:
"Do you think I could have..just mabye...a little bite?"
"NO!....don't want it to spoil your appetite."
Dad says she did perfect, I agree.
One thing that bothered me, I always pictured the WHITE Witch to be WHITE. Like paper white. So I think WMN coud've done better in that area.

I just watched the BBC version, and i like Tilda Swinton as the White Witch more, because you don't think she's evil at first because of her apperance, but in the BBC version you could kinda tell, because of how she was towards Edmund! And the actress used in the BBC version, also played the Green Witch in The Silver Chair, and i saw that before the BBC LWW
GO TILDA!!

I havent seen BBc verison..but maybe Tilda...but i thought maybe the BBc version looked how i thought jadis really looked like with the dark hair and tilda had blonde.

you may think this werid but I always imagen the witch as how Tilda looked in the LWW movie when I read the story Tilda had that Quote"looks can be deseving"going on in the LWW movie :D

Strangely I envisioned the White Witch as being dark-haired, but I thought the overall fair-skinned, blonde-haired look that Tilda Swinton bought to the role was the best. She has a regal presence being almost six feet tall!!

Probably BBC WW. Actually I don't think either of them is perfect - Barbara Kellerman (BBC witch) overacts a lot while Tilda was a bit too subdued for my personal taste.. I always think of it when I watch the scene where Edmund asks for more turkish delight. Tilda's goes "no..!" in a pretty lame way and doesn't seem all that angry, Barbara goes "NHOOOOOUAAARRRGGGHHH!" and looks throbbing-vein-in-temple furious (and it's just comical when she snaps back into her "sweet voice" and pretends like she didn't just almost have a stroke out of anger, as if maybe Edmund wouldn't notice it :D). But I pick the BBC witch for nostalgic reasons and because I prefer a psychotically evil witch to one that just seems sort of cranky that there's humans around.

Whoa, look at me yakkin' away... sorry :)

She IS supposed to be paper white. It says so in the books. So you were right. I was a bit disappointed with that area, too.

I liked Tilda better, though it has been years since I saw the BBC versions. However, I did not like the way they made her dresses stiff and sticking out around the collars. That made it look like she couldn't move around very well, and I highly doubt Jadis would have truly worn anything that would have hindered her movement. As we see in MN, Jadis kicks arse. She is stronger than any man, and she wasn't afraid to fist-fight when her magic failed her in our world. I would envision her wearing something that is both imposing and gives her ample room for maneuverability. Her costumes in the Waldenmedia version looked neither... they looked plain and uncomfortable. In the BBC verision, though, her costume was even worse. So overall, I was more pleased with her in the new one (even though I STILL have a few gripes about it). Not to mention, Tilda is a much better actress than that other one.

I must say I like Tilda better. She fits more with the image I had of the white witch when I first read the book.I dunno why,but I always imagined the white witch as blonde and fair skinned, and without black eyeliner and red lips. That look is just so typical for a "bad lady" in movies.I think it was good that Tilda wanted to do something different with her look.

Indeed so!

While Jadis was pure evil, Saruman began with a wonderful heart. His story, along with that of Denethor, turned out to be quite tragic in the end. :(

I like Barbera Kellerman better (the BBC actress soz I know practically all the actors real names.) she was more evil than Tilda. Tilda was okay, but more manipulative. She doesn't really seem the evil kind of witch who would want to kill Aslan and stuff. Still I suppose Tilda redeemed herself slightly in the battle, but for me Barbera Kellerman is the best.

Tilda forever!!!!!!!!!! Question: what is BBC?

Aravis Kenobi

BBC: British Broadcasting Company. I like the White Witch better, but aren't the witch from Charn and the one from LWW the same person?

Aravis Kenobi

Yes, I remember. I was just making sure. Some people don't know that they're the same.

Saruman
05-17-2006, 02:34 AM
I read an excerpt out of a book that's been around for some 25 years and it somewhat muddles the fact that "Jadis" and the "White Witch" are actually one in the same person. I see now where some might begin to speculate. Argh! Why don't they get the facts straight?!? :p

Lucy for 3 nights
05-17-2006, 07:54 AM
They did get the facts right in Maugrims note it says

'Former occupant of these premises faun Tumnus is under arrest and is awaiting his trial on charge of high treason against her Imperial Majesty Jadis Queen of Narnia Chateline of Cair Paravel Empress of The Lone Island etc Also of comforting her set majesties enemie harbouring spies and fratonising with humans.' (whew try writing that without using the book. I'll check how accurate I am in a mo.)

So it is mentioned that the name of The White Witch is Jadis, it just doesn't use it anymore than that one time.

God Bless

I prefer Barbara Kellerman's portrayal of Jadis - even if dark hair/ red lips/white skin is the "norm" for evil lady villains in movies... ;) The White Witch was supposed to have ghastly white skin, anyways!
Tilda wasn't evil enough, in my opinion. She just came off as very 'cold'.
She did try to cut Peter's head off - I'll give her that, but I still don't see her as the Queen Jadis I read about in "The Magician's Nephew". I can't really put my finger on what's missing, exactly. must...think...

Whether I watched the BBC version or not, I would still say Tilda was better. For a movie she was excellent. She had a 'misunderstood bad girl' about her that I liked, especially when she was cruel and vicious. She did an exceptional job, and I applaud her.

She was born to play that role!! I couldn't picture anyone else playing it in the Narnia movie. When an actress or actor fits a role so well, you just can't imagine anyone else playing it. It's like with Gone with the Wind. Who could imagine anyone but Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh as the lead roles??

A true classic movie is remembered by the actors who portrayed the great characters!

Barbara Kellerman overacted the role. Her white witch always sounded and looked like she was about to burst a blood vessel. She played it like a campy comic book villain. And since she played the hag in Prince Caspian and the Green Witch in The Silver Chair the exact same way, I think I can blame the campiness on her as an actress rather than on the directing.

Tilda may not LOOK like the book's description to the letter, but she played the role with a subtle seductiveness that was far more dimensional than the old BBC version. You really believed Edmund could fall for her ploys, while with Kellerman you kept thinking about how idiotic he'd have to be to not see right through her. Tilda was very understated and chilly, which I think was perfect, even though it was not my expectation.

I dont know which Tilda you guys all wacthed, but it werent the one I watched. When she first meets Edmund and he asks if he can have some more Turkish Delight now, her 'No' is pitifully acted. Its supposed to sound like an unsupressed outburst, instead it just comes out like an uncaring mum trying to stop her kid dropping food on the floor.

Also, she doesn't look scary. She's about as scary as my old babysitter. And going by the description in MN, shes sposed to be 'the most beautiful woman Digory had ever seen'. If its Tilda, then Digory cant have met that many women...

I like the way the way that Tilda acts (though she was described as beautiful in the book, but the make up makes her look old) but Barbra Kellerman (however spelt) looked like the white witch. She was lovely and made things run slowely. In the newer one Tilda acts like she already knows who Edmund is and she makes the conversation short! I think that is why the movie was shorter than the BBC version.

I like Tilda way better than barbara because bbcs witch (barbara) is just so like ARGGGGHHHHHHHAAHHHHHHHHHHH all the time. The witch is supposed to hide her darkness until she gets Ed into her castle, but in the bbc its like she had pms for example:

EDMUND: can i have just one more piece of turkish delight to eat on my way home?

Barbara aka ww: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHHHHHH

New Ed: Can i have 1 more piece

Tilda: NO! ( notice just a simple no) dont want to ruin ur appitiete

So Tilda. Because she hides her darkness until later and she is wayy less shouty and she can handle a wand and a sowrd better. Barbara just puts it up straight like shes gonna hit a bird and then straight down..Its like get ur aim right

lol i talk alot.
