So, does anyone know about this?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0224907/

I found that on IMDB.COM and apparently in 1967 there was a "the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" TV-Series? I never knew! Maybe I am just behind on my times. :) I guess it was Black and White in the UK. Hmm... Anyone ever see anything from this?

My Mum and Dad used to watch it... Apparently it was quite good

A TV series? That sounds so amazing. I bet it was really cool! Even if they didn't have WETA graphics back then. ^ ^ That seems really exciting. I envy all who got to see it!

So, has anyone actually seen the 1967 series, or have access to it? We're all aware of the 1988 BBC version, but I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see the older vintage.

I dug out an article on the series from The Times archive, which had this to say:
TV Serial of Book by C S Lewis

A dramatization of C.S. Lewis's children's book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe begins on ABC Television this Sunday, July 9 at 6.15 pm. The serial, which will be seen throughout the country, has been adapted in 10 episodes.

It is the story of four children who go to stay with an old professor in a remote country house. One day they find a large wardrobe in an empty room and discover that it leads into a fantastic country called Narnia inhabited by strange people and animals, and ruled by the White Witch who personifies Evil. The children join forces with the Lion, Aslan, and after many exciting adventures, the Witch is finally defeated.

The four children are played by 12-year-old Elizabeth Crowther (daughter of the actor Leslie Crowther), Zuleika Robson, 14; Edward McMurray, 13; and Paul Waller, 15.The cast also includes Jack Woolgar as the Professor, Elizabeth Wallace as the White Witch, Bernard Kay as Aslan the Lion, George Claydon as the Dwarf, Angus Lennie as the Faun and Robert Booth as the Wolf.

The adapter is Trevor Preston and the producer is Pamela Lonsdale.

It doesn't appear to be in my university library, which is a shame. Does anyone know if this ever got a commercial release? I'll be doing some more searching, of course, as I love researching anything that isn't my PhD - Narnia is one among many excellent distractions. ;)

A lot of shows from the sixties were done in black and white because it was cheaper to produce. Today, most things are colorized, but I haven't heard anything of this series. I did check www.tvshowsondvd.com and there was no listing for it, so it's not available. I have also checked various retailers online to see if the 1967 series is available. It is not, but given the success of the film may cause folks to dig these out of the archives and box them up.

I was hoping there might be one in my university archive, as they occasionally have series taped off the television - any other students on here whose library might be better stocked? Most likely to be in a British university, as it was shown on what is now ITV.

Found some further info:

Memorable TV (http://www.memorabletv.com/kidstvl.htm) (brief)

In 1967, BBC television produced a ten episode series in black and white. Well-intentioned and deeply respectful of C. S. Lewis’ allegory, this dated, but charming, series focuses on the relationships of the four children and does a wonderful job addressing the epic struggle between good and evil from an adolescent’s point of view. In this series the children act like children, and their passages through betrayal, shame and competition to loyalty, honor, and cooperation are sweet. Lewis’ Christian symbolism is strong throughout the series, and the other mythological references—Lilith, Bacchus, and the like—were left intact. Not currently available in VHS or DVD format, this BBC production is the version many baby boomers remember as their first vision of Narnia, and the memories stand the test of time.

I saw the 1967 series, I would love to see it again, but I don't think ITV kept it and it's probably best that way as it would look lame now. I was only 6 at the time but I remember the acting was great, the kids were better than any subsequent attempt I've seen, including the new movie, and the White Witch was terrifying! They got a good actress for that I've heard. Can't remember her name. However the effects were lame. The animals were in fancy dress suits, Aslan was a guy in a Lion suit standing on 2 legs, and from my dim memories, the sets were quite 'studio' looking, a bit like Doctor Who from that time. And yes, it was black & white. I didn't know anyone who had a colour tv in 1967, and then only BBC2 broadcast in colour anyhow until 1969. Most normal people in Britain got their first colour tv for the 1970 World cup.
