As narniafans mum, I have a messge for you:
If you meet anyone on the Forum, or any other Forum, or online anywhere, DO NOT send them your name, email address, physical address, photo or any personal information without discussing it with your parents first.
Although we are all friends here, not everyone who posts online is a nice person, and some could be very dangerous, but you cannot tell in a Forum or on myspace or elsewhere online. Even if you have a fun PM correspondence with them, do not give any personal info without speaking to your own mum and dad first about it.
So please be careful and use caution.
Okay? Thank you. :)

Yer i totally agree. I know that people find it really strange that me and Rogue are meeting up and that we've become best friends but thats just how everything happened. We we're frineds on here for months and we saw each other on webcam and we trusted each other to give our mobile numbers then we phoned the mobiles and spoke every night. We've even talked to each others family's lol and now our parents even trust us so they're letting Rogue come down to Cambridge and then we're going up to London!
But yes i totally agree with inkspot. Dont give out any personal info to people you meet on a forum.

Yes, this stuff IS important. I've posted my pic a few times, but I am always careful even with that, to do it through an image hosting website, and not the family website (which includes my last name). People also know my name, but forget it, since everyone calls me Tweets, Tweetsie, and I could go on. But my dad, when he first found out I was getting into this forum stuff, gave me this whole talk/lecture on it. So I know where to be cautious and where to be a bit more carefree. No one knows my email here, they can track me by it. I live in a big city, and I don't really mind saying where, but I don't do so carelessly. This forum, as far as I have seen is the most safe I have seen. The people here are friendly, kind, and mostly church going and such. But myspace is a whole different matter. You have to REALLY watch yourself there. It's just not safe, so heed mother inkspot's warning forum-goers, because she's right.

Wise words. I'll take heed to them ^^ You always have to be careful on forums because you can never be sure who you are talking to, even if they tell you.

Please guys, don't give away your address. No matter how much you trust them, the simple fact is you have never met the people on the site. You can't know where they live, and people do lie. If y ou have given away your address, don't freak out and everything, nothing will probably happen. But PLEASE don't do it again.
Our only concern is to keep you safe.

No, nothing happened. We just have so many members now, and some of us have become good friends. So, I thought it would be good to remind everyone not to put yourself in a dangerous situation. Like Rogue and EdmundsQueen, their families know they are talking and approve -- that's the way to do it, just discuss it with your folks first. Thanks!!!

I did give my number out before, to three people, I trust Chloe because she knows Rogue (as so I could talk to Anna), then Kayla because we have known each other for months and I told her not to if she didn't feel it was safe, and Rachel, because I am less carful than I should be.

Im in ICT atm and im guessing Rogue is on a train so i have to get out of school, get changed, get my stuff and get to mi sisters Sixth Form coz she also needs to go to the station, get to the station and get Rogue in like 1 hour after i come out of school. Ive got 10 mins left of school so im getting v excited. i have to admit i am a bit nervous but i think thats just coz we're finally meeting after our phone calls every night and talking to each others families etc etc. :D

I gave my name and address to someone, but I totally trust him and we live like in two different states, and there's probably no chance of us meeting on a webcam or anywhere else, but I agree that we should all take precautions, and I haven't shared my phone number, physical address, or picture with him. Anytime someone wants to add me to their instant message list, I always block the address unless it's someone I know or recognize. I always tell people to contact me in private message form before they actually contact me using that medium. i don't mind being pmed, but I do mind being

Hey, she's just reminding us that the internet is not always a friendly place. If there were more people like her, there wouldn't need to be those kind of warnings everywhere you go. And just because you don't care, that doesn't mean that others don't. I, for one, am very happy that she cares so much about us that she would look out for our well-being even though she hasn't met the majority of us and probably never will.

Well, I suppose my problem is I'm way too honest for my own good in real life and on the forum. I'm fearless that way which can be good and bad, depending on how you look at it. I actually had a strange thing happen to me, not on this forum of course, but on ebay. I was selling some clothes and I made the fatal mistake of showing my face and body while wearing this black dress. There was a guy who must have been trolling the ebay board looking for photos of women, because he would not stop bothering me until I reported him to ebay. It turned out he was a member but he hadn't sold or bought anything, he had ZERO feedback, and just became a member I guess so he could troll.
The interesting thing about the internet is....it's anonymous, and yet, hackers or creeps can find out a lot more about you than you think. There's less privacy than you think.
I found out there's a member here who lives in my hometown, and I wouldn't mind meeting him in a public setting to talk about Narnia things and collecting. It would be great if one day, select Narnia fans could agree to meet somewhere and have a day to ourselves talking Narnia, if that ever happened.

This may sound uncommonly silly, but what if the Internet had existed during World War Two, and Professor Kirk's house had had connectivity to the Narnian world? If Edmund had come in contact with Jadis online, she could have collected vital information about him and his siblings before anyone stepped through the wardrobe, and she could have had an ambush set up at the interface point in Lantern Waste. Then, at the very least, Aslan would have been compelled to intervene faster to save the Pevensies. This frivolous what-if is NOT intended to suggest that the online-stalker threat is only a fantasy, quite the contrary.
For myself, on the other hand, no internet predators are hunting for 54-year-old grandfathers. So I will say that I live at:
7166 Harp String, Columbia, Maryland 21045
That's an outlying suburb of Baltimore.
Joseph Ravitts
P.S. After my initial posting of this entry, I looked back at some that precede this one, and I had a dreadful thought. Could that have been ME that one of the young ladies is complaining about? The other day I was on the forum, and saw where some girl posted what she said was her own picture, showing her in a quasi-medieval formal gown. I wrote a message to her that complimented her appearance, while also stating that I wasn't "searching" since I'm an old married man. I don't remember if I used the word "hot;" in fact, I don't even remember for certain now who the young lady was. If the girl to whom Copperfox sent a message sees _this_ post, and if she is in fact the same one who's complaining now, I sincerely apologize for upsetting you. I had thought that I worded my compliment in a non-threatening way. Well, you never know.

But this is why I also tell the members who enter my contests to BE SURE they have parental permission to give out e mail addresses and their personal names and addys to receive the prizes...because I don't want them getting into trouble.
And did you guys see that stupid senator guy who recently got into trouble for harassing young pages? That is the epitome of bitter irony...a guy who makes laws to PREVENT children from being stalked and abused online, and here he is doing the very thing he is supposed to be against. Idiot.

Carry the same caution into the real world. It is not a bad idea to be unpredictable, if possible, in your daily movements--drive along different streets, shop on different days of the week, etc. Make it harder for stalkers.
As for my telling my name and address openly: I have hopes of gaining some success as a columnist, even a novelist if the Lord permits; and that means having contact with the public. I don't relish what could happen to a Christian writer if certain trends in society are not stopped; but hiding is of limited usefulness anyway when tyranny is coming. And such modest contribution as I can make to resisting tyranny will not be made if I hide and keep silent.
(Just to be clear, when I speak of tyranny, I _don't_ mean any of the distracters pointed to by fools, like oil corporations or imaginary full-scale revivals of Nazi Germany. I mean the Big Three: Islamist extremism, repackaged Marxism, and wacko-New-Age-hippie-wannabe-ism.)

Well if you're as old as I am you don't have to worry about stalkers. I've met Timbalionguy, exchanged addresses with about four or five members, and plan to meet Nightmystic on the forum in person with his wife soon also!!!!
:D
I hardly think that's the truth, LM!!!! LOL!!! You aren't that old and I've seen your pictures. :D But yeah, I can't wait for my wife and I to get together with LM. I would love to meet more people from TDL who either live in Central California or neighboring areas or who plan to come to California on vacation. I have a free pass for all the National Parks in the U.S., and around the first of the year I will also have a free pass for all the State Parks in California.

I'd really like to meet you as well. I wonder what can be worked out.

Well, work it out with Michelle. Since we are meeting in Reno, I don't see why we couldn't work out a time to meet. It would be cool.

It's entirely up to you how much information you give out...if you are under 18, then you definitely need your parents' permission as to what exact info you can give out. I would play it safe really...if you are under 18, you really shouldn't even give your first real name out...maybe have a nickname you use online. These days people can even find out where you live, and there ARE internet predators out there especially preying on young people.

Yes, LM is right. If you're underage, talk to your parents about information it is safe to give out. I would think your first name and age are OK, but probably just your screen name or nickname is better until you are sure of the person you're dealing with.

I've just given out my name and the state I'm in. If they don't have anything else to go by, it isn't a big deal.

Yes, be very careful. If you make friends with someone online, tell your parents about them, and then your folks can help you know what information can be shared.

Actually I have my last name written on another forum that I'm on (in my profile). The forum is American anyways :P
And.. I would like to know one thing guys... How are you supposed to figure out a guys IP adress via an email adress? There's no actual IP to figure out besides for the people who owns/operates the server you're logged into, right (or am I wrong)?

hey i agree with all of you it is very dangerous to give out personal information to people you meet online....yeah.....it's easy for me to say "it's dangerous" but i have given out some info....especially on myspace and i do it i guess cause i don't feel fear since it's online but hey there are people that can do many things to you even online. there are people that can hack your computer and know many things about you. it's scary but true. unfortunately we can't trust everyone. most of us join forums and myspace to keep up with our friends and family and want to meet new friends online. but unfortunately there are cruel and sick people who disguise themselves as teenagers to chat with us and gain trust so that we can give out information and then they may try to find a way to do something bad to you. when you meet someone don't give out all your information....you may probabaly give out your first name but even so......maybe you can lie about your name? ....atleast til you FULLY trust and know the person and their intentions towards you. and maybe you can say your age and....i don't think you should tell them the place you live in. always be careful and don't trust everyone sadly we can't trust EVERYONE we meet :( :( :( :(

Even if you trust the person, if you are under age, talk to your parents before you give any personal information. Sometimes parents have a more realistic view than kids do, so it helps to have their permission.

I'll second what Inkspot said there! Listen to this wonderful, wise woman!!! She cares about your well being! Be careful and watch out. Even on a forum like this it's still good to be careful, even if the forum base isn't in your country...that doesn't matter. Many sickos can travel. Take care yall.
