View Full Version : What wars?
Tirian of Narnia

It says in the last battle that both Tirian and Jewel had both saved each other`s lives in the wars. I'm just curious, what wars? Do you think maybe wars with the calormenes?

The implication is that there are always low-grade struggles of some sort or other - you know, giants, pirates (:)), Rangers, and the like.

That sounds right. Maybe some more of the same kind of robbers his grand father made the towers for.

In the last battle it says that Rishda`s father had gone to war against the Narnian's at one time so maybe it was the calormenes after all.

There's a lot of scope for 'other' histories with the tidbits that Lewis hinted at..all those islands out past Narnia could hold unfriendly forces..it's one of these thing's we'll never know!

well, there is a lot of time between each chronicle, and even narnia had to have its own revolts, civil wars, and battles of disagreement with chalormen and even archland, well may be not but its cool to think about it that way since it makes narnian history more interesting.

Thats a good question. Yes, It would seen most likely that they were wars with Calorman. But remebmber, Tirain said that he had once gone as a gest to Tashbaan, so there msut have bean so sort of peace, and amybe even freinship between them. It dose show us how maney gaps there is in NArnia history, so there is a lot of scopere for making up new stories....

Susan was thinking of marrying a Calormene, so they must have had a peaceful relationship at that time. But doesn't it say somewhere in HHB or TLB that the only reason the Calormenes hadn't attacked before was that there was no easy way to cross the great desert with an army? It seems like they knew the Calormenes were ony peaceful because they had no other option.

In HHB, the head dude said that they hadn't invaded Narnia because they had heard that a powerful enchantress kept it under her spell with ice and snow. So, essentially, they were afraid of the White Witch; and a country of perpetual snow wasn't of any real use to southerners who enjoyed their warmth. So that was the key factor, aside from how difficult it was to cross the desert, I think. I mean, once the Pevensies came to power, and Narnia got all prosperous, then they were all up for it. Except they were still afraid of Aslan. The Calormenes seemed like a deeply supersitious people.

So how long was it between Narnia's creation and the rise of Jadis' power as the White Witch? And were there any Calormenes then? Maybe before the White Witch made the hundreds year's winter, the Calormenes tried to invade, and Frank's descendants fought them off?
Hey, this might be good for IM's story over in Professor's writing club, what if Jadis came to power in Narnia by offering protection from the Calormenes? That would make sense with the Calormenes being afraid of the enchantress. What if the Narnians were about to be over-run by the Calormenes (because by now Diggory's apple tree had died and there was no protection for Narnia), and she appeared and drove the Calormenes back by her magic arts ... then just took over Narnia, like the USSR after WWII. They helped save the allies, then did a big land grab.
This could be the dramatic finish for IM's story, and show how Jadis was able to consolidate power in Narnia and begin her 100-year winter, setting the stage for LWW.

Sounds intersting. This shoew how much scope there is to write our own histories of the narnian world from the clues Lewis gave us.
