Although I'm not Canadian, I have friends there. One of the funniest things I've seen on the road was when Dave came here from Manitoba in his car and went on a day trip with me and a couple of friends to the Nashville Zoo.
Jarrod practically flipped out when he saw HOW FAST Dave was driving. "Slow DOWN, man! You're going over A HUNDRED!"
The speedometer was in KPH not MPH. Dave still gets jokes about his "reckless driving" incident. :D

I'm Canadian. From Manitoba (rather dull). I like Canada. Except for the cold winters and mosquitoes, it's nice. Especially when you're smack in the middle. I don't have to worry about any of those crazy storms people on the coast get.

Yes, they do. A family at my old church were from Canada and my English teacher is, and they all had a very slight accent. Different vowel pronunciation, I think.

It's funny how when I go to the US for vacation, I accidentaly use Canadian terms and people have no clue what I mean. Such as calling a couch a "chesterfield" or a napkin a "serviette" like my grandparents when they went to Hawaii. Or when my mum said jam instead of jelly and the person stared at her like she was an alien. :)
Once at McDonalds in the US, I accidentaly asked for a Smartie McFlurrie, forgetting that American "smarties" are just like Rockets. Haha. The lady at the counter looked apalled. :) Always remember to ask for M&Ms when you go to the US. :)

It would be just to the north. The Detroit River flows out of it and the St. Clair River flows into it. If you follow the St. Clair River far enough north, you get to Lake Huron. Right at the head of the river, where the lake flows into it, are the twin cities of Port Huron and Sarnia. That's where I live.

Neither one of you has been to Ontario? You should go and visit it someday!! It's very beautiful. I'm european (and a proud one) and Ontario reminded me of Europe. Outside Toronto I was feeling I as still at home. The houses alongside the highway reminded me of my own Holland but downtown Toronto was typical American style. A mixture of both.
The first pic is the canadian fall and the second one the american. (click to enlarge)

I'll still take the United States, because U.S. citizens, when compared to Canadians, have MORE freedom (1) to state their religious and moral convictions, as columnist Mark Steyn can attest, and (2) to defend themselves against predatory criminals when police DON'T arrive in time to do any good.
Mrs Gil-Galad Took
10-17-2008, 04:48 PM
That's something here in the Netherlands should be changed as well. You are NOT allowed to defend yourself in your own home when a criminal attacks you. First something has to be done BEFORE you can do something at all. I understand many people are taking the laws in their own hands. I don't say it's good but I understand.

OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tonight my friends and I went to the opening of the new movie "Passchendale", the WWI movie with Paul Gross.
Well, let me tell you all...I was in hysterics I was crying so bad, I couldnt breathe I was crying so hard and I was shaking. It is one of the most touching movies, I am aware that it is about war and shouldnt be "beautiful" or "amazing" but it really was.
It was the first movie in a long time that I didnt talk at all...I usually never shut up in movies...this one...shut me up! It was so real, and vivid and almost horrifying seeing it. It was almost like you were there in the trenches with the troops, it really makes you think. I got really emotional because I know that both my Great-Grandpa's lived through it...and I couldnt help but thank God during the movie.
With Rememberance Day coming up next month, I hope many of you will see it. It really puts it into perspective at how horrible the war (and all wars) was. A lot of the audience were older and they were shocked to see 6 teenage girls in the theater, none the less two of them crying like maniacs.
All I can say...it was incredible and Paul Gross was amazing in it.
*beings crying once again :o*

It was clear God was watching over him  Even in the end he could have been killed when he was wearing this nazi coat. I liked it even more than Schindler's list which also happened to be a very good movie.
Are you adancer? What dances if I might ask? The movie is very sad. Tom Hanks played wonderful in it. And of course the song by Bruce Springsteen

I knew that he was going to live, it was just that thinking that life was like that for so many millions of people, it just broke me. Adrien Brody did an amazing job....as much as I cried (my teacher kept asking me if I needed to leave) I almost am tempted to watch it again. Schindlers List - My mom said it was really good, I havent seen it yet. *grabs umbrella*

You should watch it! Whenever you have time of course ;) It is a great movie. especially at the end when Oscar Schindler breaks down and cried he could have saved more people. He already did  In this movie you will see Itzhak Stern. A miracle happened to him  It's one of the most amazing parts of the whole movie!!! But I'm not going to ruin it for you ;)
Did you see The Pianist at school? I agree...Adrien Brody was amazing. Really amazing.

I was talking about the new movie "Passchendaele" that came out yesterday (I'm not sure if it is playing in the states or not...). Its a Canadian film (shot in Calgary, Alberta and some shots were in France I believe) and was about the battle of Passchendaele in WWI.
I brought up how I was crying so hard that I couldnt breathe and that I was shaking and then MGGT brought up the Pianist.

Ummm...well I know next month there is a new movie "The Boy In The Striped Pyjama's" coming out. Its another Holocaust movie (wow, I'm really depressing LOL.) and it looks fabulous. I recommend "Swing Kids" (if you havent already seen it)- its about the Hitler Youth and the kids who were against it. That one is another really good war movie.
As you can tell I love history alot...LOL.

(((((((Hugs you))))))))!!! We seem to have this in common! I love those kinda movies as well. They are partly based on persons, events and on books. One of the movies I always used to love was The Great escape. It's an old one with Steve mcQueen in it. One of the best movies from the past I think.
I must write those names down. One is going to be released and the other one is released.
No, I haven't seen that one. But it sounds good. Kids are a great subject in movies and especially when they are feeling something isn't right.

*HUGS!*
Yeah "Swing Kids" was really really good. It shows you about the other side of kids in Germany, the ones who didnt get sucked in by propaganda and who knew it was wrong! I was cheering so loud! LOL.
There is another movie, "Atonement" with Keira Knightley and James McAvoy...that one focuses in on WWII. It has a bit of the Evacutation of Dunkirk and also a small bit about the Blitz at the end. James McAvoy's character plays a Soldier so you follow him throught bits of the war. Its not entirely a war movie, but a beautiful love story. The beach at Dunkirk, was remade all entirely at the original beach in France. Again it shows you what these soldiers put up with! It was really good, bawled my eyes out at that one too :o (BTW: Its also a book, by Ian McEwan)
"The Great Escape"...going to have to go find that one...I dont think I have seen that one

I was very moved by "The Pianist", although I saw it by mistake. I just thought it was about any old pianist, had no idea what the story was. After seeing it, I read the book, did some research, bought some Polish-produced CDs of the man's music, and made an impromptu trip to LA to hear a singer debut some songs of his she'd recorded, with new lyrics and arrangements. At this concert, I met the pianist's son and grandson! Amazing.
And Philadelphia -- the first time I saw it I sobbed. I saw it again recently, on TV --- no tears this time, tho it is a very compelling movie.

Okay, back to Canada. Last fall for work I traveled to North Bay, Ontario. Anybody been there? I found it absolutely charming. Small town, out in the middle of nowhere, on a big lake, flowers growing EVERYWHERE and the friendliest people I think I have ever met. Although I was there only 5 days, I attended Mass at 4 different churches and had 1 amazing dinner at a lovely bistro on the lake. I would love to go back as a tourist and explore more. Also stopped at a provincial park where the leaves were turning. Majestic and glorious.

My high school French Club traveled to Montreal and I did much better speaking French in the department stores there than in the classroom. 10 years late I was blessed to go to Paris for 5 days. And although I hadn't really ussed my French during those 10 years, once I got there it all came back to me and I was able to speak enough French as to gain the respect of most Parisiens!
I've been to Manhattan twice, though I've never seen a Broadway show there. Iceland -- I'd LOVE to visit there. Anywhere, really. I simply love to travel. I can have an adventure almost anywhere. God's world is filled with amazing things to experience and discover, n'est-ce pas?;)

I absolutely WILL buy tickets for the royal ballet if Josie will make it. I don't doubt it will happen considering she is doing everything to make it ;)
And I'm going back to Toronto for a holiday anyway. I love this city and I love Canada. I have made a lot of pictures while being there. Of course I visited the hockey stadium and I also have done a sight seeing tour :D

Yes I am studying dance :D
I've been dancing since I was three and a half and I am turning 17 next month :D So...14 years!!
Ballet is my main focus - but that is changing LOL. I am taking more and more Contemporary/Modern classes. I also study Jazz, Lyrical and Musical Theater.
Lets just say Dance is my life and I love love love to study it! :D
Here in Vancouver there are a ton of studios downtown that do like...any dance imaginable...its great :D

I oncec went to a Tony Bennet convert at a hotel where I was staying in Toronto. I was there for a convention of the American Symphony Orchestra League about 20 years ago!
Okay, box seats at the ballet. And we'll get all dressed up. Now as for the hockey game -- Do you prefer to sit right up close to all the fights!?!?
Josie you must have a gift to have been dancing all these years. How wonderful! I would love to dance. So expressive. I once saw American football player Herschel Walker dance in a ballet, and I had season tickets that year. What a treaet.

That would have been a treat to see him in a ballet!! Lucky you!
Confession time: I've never been to a hockey game...ever :o LOL. I dont live up to the Canadian stereotype (then again I dont have an igloo either LOL LOL) :p

Songs...I think I will have a seat in front :D But not too close. Suppose they hit their stick through the window  I really WANT to visit a game!!! It's my dream :D Josie...the guy in my siggy and avy is not someone who lives in an iglo either. He is way too big ;)
My niece always has been into ballet but she is a painter right now. And I agree! Josie is very talented and it's good she is not focused on only one thing but because she studies more she can more easily try something else as well.

oh this is shaping up swimmingly ladies! Josie, maybe you can teach me too -- the dancing part, not the skating part! I ice-skated once in my life, in Montreal, and sprained my wrist. No skating since then!
Here's a link to an article about Herschel's dancing stint. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DEFD71E3DF932A25757C0A96E9482 60 Maybe it will give us some tips for getting this set up between Eric and the Royal Ballet.:D Yay yay yay yay yay *pirouettes in her imagination!*

It's a dream to meet him :D
But if Josie is going to perform on stage and I am in Toronto I will go and see her on stage!!
