in character: I believe I could be of most help to your grace as a co-captain of the spies. i have certain *pauses delicately* skills and advantages that may aid our cause. And if I may suggest, that the archers be sure to shoot low. In this manner, even the wounded must halt to pull out the arrow while running. if shot high they need not break stride. But a knight or pirate who must slow his pace is easily captured.

And where do ye plan to attack me heartie? On the closed thread? PM nasty messages to the Queen that really have not basis in these RPG facts? Rangers, we don't mind ye gettin on and challengin us fer the rule of Narnia, we pirates never shy away from a good (Or considerin who we're fightin, semi-good :p ) fightbut I would suggest that if yer gonna claim to have Aslan's backin, ye are gonna run into a lot O' trouble. I might suggest that ye claim to be faithful to Illuvatar, or King Aragorn, or somone else. It seems a bit odd that ye Rangers from Middle Earth can claim to have the backin of Aslan. And also, no matter if ye did have the backin of Aslan (Which I'm not sayin that ye do) ye couldn't use him to win all yer battles fer ye or anything. We kind of outlawed that after the Knights called him in to end our first good battle with them. Also, if yer thinkin seriously about wagin war on we pirates, and our new allies, the Knights, beware! Once we pirates give our loyalty, we don't give it up easy. And if ye attack our allies, ye are in fer it. But when ye do attack, I STRONGLY suggest that ye abide by these rules and suggestions, laid down by we pirates and Knights:

To the Narnian Pirates, from Prince of the West, advisor and counselor to Queen Hannah the Gentle, sovereign of Narnia under Aslan and the High King Peter,
…there have been some issues pertaining to the realism of the respective threads that are making it difficult to sustain the proportion and pace of the action, and to keep the two "realities" coordinated. For instance, though it may be gratifiying for a given pirate to holler: "GRRRR! Fire the cannon! *blasts chunk off castle*", such a pronouncement is unrealistic if the ship is supposedly well over the horizon and out of range of either their or the fortresses guns. That is like playing chess and pronouncing, "Arrgh! This pawn is a queen, and you're in check!" If either or both sides ignore any semblance of realism, and feels that it can simply pronounce something to be true in order to make it so - well, then all challenge leaves the interplay, and takes all the fun with it.

Realistic geography
Distance matters, particularly at sea. To simply pronounce, "we're there!", while ignoring the question of distance and travel time (not to mention use of resources), is to rob the thread of realistic tenor. I realize that it is hard to keep in everyone's mind the location of a moving object such as a ship, but some semblance of realism would make things much more challenging and interesting. I think you would find that to have a series of posts that record the sighting of land, the sighting of the fortress, coming within cannon range, etc. makes for a much more interesting interplay.

Realistic advantages & disadvantages
Likewise, it will be much more engaging if we are realistic about the advantages each side enjoys, and not lose sight of the corresponding disadvantages. For instance, we have been tolerant of the idea of pirates bodily teleporting (which is extremely unrealistic), but to have teleporting pirates who cannot be killed or wounded sailing on a ship that can move about instantaneously, cannot burn, can be repaired almost immediately, and can be pumped dry in five minutes - well, much more of that and it isn't going to be worth engaging you at all. Given the cultural and technical environment that we have chosen to work in, I submit that we keep the following realities in mind:

The main platform for the Pirates is a wooden sailing ship. Wooden sailing ships:
Have a maximum speed of about 10 knots (i.e. nautical miles per hour); crusing speed is typically 5-7 knots
Need provisions, such as food, water, and repair supplies
Consume things such as powder and shot, which must be replaced
Are armed with iron cannon, which have a maximum effective range of about 2 miles
Can only elevate their cannon sufficiently to hit an object 100 feet above the ground
Can depress their guns only enough to hit an object outside of a 100 foot radius from the vessel
Have crewmen armed with smooth bore muskets and pistols. A musket has an effective range of 200 feet and an accurate range of 100 feet. A pistol's effective and accurate range is half that.
Can burn. Though you may claim some protection from burning due to black magic, it is utterly unrealistic to pretend that a wooden sailing vessel is fireproof.
Take at least some time, effort, and resources to repair.
Can only see as far as the horizon (12mi at sea level under ideal conditions - clear sky, broad daylight, no haze)

The main platform for the Knights is a stone fortress. Stone fortresses:
Cannot move at all
Need provisions, such as food, water, and repair supplies
Consume things such as powder and shot, which must be replaced
Are armed with a few iron cannon mounted atop a tower. These have restricted range.
Can elevate their guns to strike an object four miles away, but accuracy is severly hindered over two miles
Can depress the guns only enough to hit an object outside of half a mile from the shore at the base of the fortress. Things within half a mile of this shore must be dealt with by other means.
Are susceptible to blasting. Gunpowder spelled the end of stone fortresses, since charges could be laid under walls and by gates to blast them open (of course, the charge-layers had to get that close...)
May be defended by people with firearms, but they would be smooth-bore weapons.
May be defended by crossbows (eff range 100ft) or longbows (eff. range 100yds)
A lookout on top of the tower can see 15 mi under ideal conditions, but detail is unclear outside of 12mi

There are other matters of realism that can be addressed in particular posts, but just keeping these factors in mind can make things much more challenging.

Balance & Reciprocity
The principle of balance is that advantages have corresponding disadvantages. For example, Parthian King detached with a strike force to find and destroy the land base; but his absence meant risk for the fortress, since his troops were not present. If the pirates had launched a landing in their absence, the Knights would not have been able to just whistle, "Parthians!" and have the entire force right there; they would have had to live with the disadvantage of their absence. Likewise, the water sprites had a unique ability to work against the ship, but that ability came at both cost and risk. I would submit that each side's respective advantages have a counterbalancing disadvantage, just to make things interesting.
Reciprocity is the balance of one side's advantage with another. For instance, the pirate's ability to bodily teleport could be countered by the centaur Thundermien's ability to detect such teleportation and use it to reverse the action.


I hope this gives you some idea of how a fair battle between us should go. Also, ye need to know that we pirates are the only ones in this land with powder, muskets, pistols, and cannons. We have these only because we came from Earth originally, and have remembered how to manufacture powder, and keep them in good shape. Ye Rangers cannot have any unless you steal them from, us. And let me say that right now we have all our weaponry in a hidden place that I'm not planning on every telling ye Rangers, so toss overboard every thought of stealin it now (Out of character: Seriously, that wasn't an invitation to steal it. According to the rules of these RPG's you can't really steal it now. We pirate's aren't stupid enough to suggest the idea to you and then leave our weaponry unguarded.) Also, if ye steal anything from us in the future, ye need to have some posts in the Pirate thread, and yers to alert us to the thievery, or we will not recognize it as such (That would be like me posting in the Pirate thread: Hey look! I stole all the rangers bows and arrows! And I killed thier leader! Ha, ha, ha!" Without posting anything beforehand in your thread. You would either have to not recognize it, or think up a silly way to ressurrect them and recover the weapons.)

Also, a note to any dirty turncoat pirates thinkin about joinin on this thread as a Ranger: Beware of the revenge of all the pirates if ye turn on us now! Dirty turncoats get no mercy from me, The Twilight Terror. If ye want to join up with these wet behind the ears landlubbing usurpers (No offense Rangers...) fine by me! But don't blame me fer the horrible consequences when ye do....


A further note to any Knights who are listening to the whispered words of wormtongued Rangers (No offense again...): ARR! It be a thing unworthy of a man or women, let alone a Knight sworn to the service of yer country (If yer into that sort of thing. We pirates aren't, but still...) to turn yer back on it now! These Rangers have besmirched the good name of yer noble Queen, accused her of being a "second Jadis", questioned yer solemn alliance with the great lion Aslan, not to mention walked in on us in a time of peace and decided to stir up war again! If ye think these people are more noble than the Knights, well, maybe ye weren't cut out to be a Knight in the first place.

As I hope you are aware for gossip travels faster than the swiftest horse or straightest arrow, that the captain of the pirates, (Jimmy) chose to retire from his duties and allow his devoted crew to assume leadership of the pirates. However, I have learned that the queen of the knights has deserted them in their hour of need. They are weak and leaderless and we can perhaps ally them to her side. The Calormene is a bit troublesome but it appears that he is viewed as nothing more than an annoying gnat. We need to encourage alliances before another leader is chosen.

{co-captain of the spies returns after many wanderings throughout Narnian lands. He prepares to give full account of the days activities to his true friend and noble leader, the Lady Elindil}

*Bows low to the ground* My lady, we have several key positions unoccupied by brave rangers as of yet. The search continues to find those Rangers still loyal to the Emperor and Narnia who can see through the imposters who have bewitched the Knights and Pirates. The unfilled titles (http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5537&page=14&pp=10) are the following:
1 archer,
3 swordsmen,
2 spies,
2 hunters,
captain of the hunters.
We still have 2 members with unclaimed roles: reepicheepfan, and .:susan.the.gentle:.

I suggest that we presently lay low (quite naturally, as co-leader of the spies) until we fill these vacant positions and are able to organize our troops. I recommend to abstain from full blown battles (as overmatched as the enemy appears to be presently) until we become better organized. I foresee an attack at dawn two days henceforth, once these things have been accomplished. I will now retire to the woods, awaiting your command, your Grace.

*bows, and exits the camp*

*The woods ring with the growing sound of irregular thumpings that grow steadily louder. Nothing can be seen, but branches swish and leaves fall as if being knocked down. The clearing in which Charn_Tim and Elendil met suddenly rings with cries and thumps, though none can see anything.*

"Hey!" cries Charn_Tim as a solid blow lands on his shoulder, causing him to stumble. As he reaches for his bruised shoulder, his green ranger cloak is pulled up over his head. Blinded, he tries to reach for his sword, but many hand are spinning him around and pushing him to the ground. He tries to roll away, but blows from fists and tremendously powerful kicks rain down on him.

"Unhand my Ranger!" shouts Lady Elendil, but suddenly she is surrounded by loud thumps, and invisible hands grab at her clothes, hair, and belt. She reaches for her sword, but her grip is torn away. Twisting and lashing out at her invisible assailants, she is suddenly struck by a tremendous blow on her side, as if from a giant hand wielding a giant cricket bat. Stunned, she falls to the ground, where she rolls a bit and manages to pull out her dagger. She futilely slashes at the air, but the assault seems to have ceased. She hears thumping moving away to the far side of the clearing.

"Cowards! Knaves! What do you want? Show yourselves and fight!" cries Lady Elendil, rising to her feet. Seeing Charn_Tim lying still on the ground, she rushes over to him. "My Ranger! Are you hurt?"

"Not - not more than bruises, my lady", Charn_Tim replies, stirring himself. "I'm sorry, I was taken unawares. I should have protected you."

"It's hard to fight invisible enemies", Lady Elendil replies, standing and helping Charn_Tim to his feet. They both draw their swords. "Hi! Cowards! Show yourselves!"

"Aye, that we can't, missy", comes a voice from the far side of the clearing.

"That we can't, Chief, that we can't. Clear as a bell, you are." clamors a chorus of voices.

"And why not? Because we're invisible, that's why", the voice continues.

"Right you are, Chief! Nobody says it better than you, that's the way, that's the way", the chorus echoes.

"What is your complaint with us?" asks the Lady Elendil, glancing around her for any sign of the foe. "Why do you attack us without warning?"

"Oh, hear her, hear her", the Chief's voice says. "Without warning, she says. Without warning."

"Hear her indeed", the chorus mutters, "hear her! Without warning!"

"I gave ye fair warning, I did", the Chief's voice says. "I gave all of ye fair warning yesterday - knights and rangers and pyrates all."

"That you did, Chief, that you did. Keep it up, maybe they'll learn from you."

"I warned you that we wouldn't be puttin' up with all this traipsin' and trespassin' all over our land, and layin' lordly claims to things that hain't yours."

"You said it, Chief, you said it. Warned 'em good, you did."

"So just to prove we weren't kidding, we though we'd - what's that word? - reinforce, that's it - reinforce the lesson a bit. Cuz we don't like your types running all around our land, talking of fights and carring weapons. We don't like it at all."

"No more we do, Chief, no more we do. Keep it up, you're going like a house afire."

"Mind you, today was just fists and kicks, that was all it was", the Chief continued.

"No more than that, no more than that", the chorus echoed.

"Those were kicks?" Charn_Tim said to Lady Elendil, rubbing his tender shoulder. "I've never been kicked like that."

"But next time, I fear, it will be swords and spears and daggerts, that's what it'll be", the Chief warned.

"That it will, Chief! Keep it up!"

"So let's have a little less bold talk, and a little more respect for the true citizens of the Land of the Duffers", the Chief concluded. "Come on, lads."

"That's right, Chief!" the chorus cried. "Less bold talk, more come on-ing! We're coming, Chief! Lead on!"

"Wait! Come back!" cried Lady Elendil, but the thumping faded into the forest. "We want to -" She looked at Charn_Tim with a dismayed expression.

"Great", Charn_Tim said with a glum look. "Invisible enemies."

Arr, I would be interested what you define as spamming. Do ye define talking as spamming? If so, then I guess yer right, and if ye object to that, then ye aren't gonna be that happy with the Knights I guess. But also, I think ye may be basing yer judgement of all of us by posts by a few people. Our Captain was a good starter for the pirates, and a fine fellow, but in my humble opinion, some of his posts were somewhat....questionable.

We don't mind ye Rangers bein here unless you start insulting the Queen of the Knights just because she's too busy devote a lot of her time to leading her Knights, or start saying you should rule the lands just because of that, or because you say that yer more loyal to Aslan than us.

At a way, Chief! No one leads like the Chief, that's what I say! And why not? because nobody follows! Silly Reepicheep fan, shoulda checked out Real Duffer thread posts #29-30. That flour trick ends up with us cranky and you dusty-lookin', which improves you a bit, no offense intended, not to put too fine a point on it.
