Yep. My brother got me into them-- so far I've read the first and second books, and decoded the thingy at the bottom of the pages in the first one. Have you done that? It's pretty neat, and not too hard once you get the hang of it. I'm looking forward to those movies, but I hope they don't overdo them. A book like that would be easy to ruin by trying to make it too colorful and kidsy, like the travesty of Ella Enchanted.

I have all three books. Read them a while ago. Got to talk to Eoin Colfer while on study leave just after he released his second book. Thats how I got into them. He gave me a copy of the first one.

They were much better than I thought they'd be. But don't trust people when they tell you "it's like Harry Potter with fairies"-- it's just as good, but it's got a very different feel from Harry Potter.

yes it is a very different feel than harry potter
and id have to say that harry potters better

Artemis Fowl was great. Butler was bloody hilarious and Foaly! hehe gotta love him. I hear they're making a movie but i'm not so sure if that's a good thing. Yea they totally ruined Ella Enchanted and I LIKED that book too. Eh well one can always hope that they'll do a better job with this.

He ended the third book so that it could either be the end of the series, or if he decided to write more books, He could continue it on when Artemis was a few years older.

So, I hope he does write more. It would be interesting to read of Artemis when he was older, and had even better plans to trick the faries.

I just read the first book (in one afternoon.. geez) and i really liked it. Obviously they are written for an age group slightly below mine.. but no worries, still cool. I identify with Artemis.. 12 year old criminal mastermind.. exactlywhat i wanted to be at that age.

He also reminds me strongly of Omega. MFNers will get that.

I've never even heard of "Artemis Fowl." Actually, now that I think about it, I love fantasy but haven't really gone out "looking" for fantasy novels to read. I read "The Hobbit" and "LotR" and loved those of course, then finally read "Narnia," which has a style that clicked with me more. But beyond those, I just don't know any other fantasy novels. (I'm so deprived I'm sure) I do know a bit about different mythology, but that's ancient stuff.

So "Artemis Fowl" is a recommendation? What are some other good books that a fantasy-craving reader (such as myself) should dive into?

NiennaTinuviel
08-22-2004, 03:15 PM
The Abhorsen and Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Also he does this really good scifi book, Shade's Children. I say that I'm a fantasy fanatic but I find that I really am not that broad in my scope of fantasy literature. I mean, I only read stuff by about 3 main authors. J.R.R. Tolkien, Garth Nix and Lloyd Alexander. And of course I've read the Narnia books. A Wizard of Earthsea is also pretty good, what I read of it that is.

There'd better be another Artemis Fowl book. I love them they are great for a quick easy but very satisfying read, and the characters are amazing, i want to find out what happens to them all, he left it so open at the end of book 3

Monkeh
09-09-2004, 07:18 AM
Well he didn't leave it open as much as he left an opening so he could write another book if he had time/felt the need.

Maybe its one of them books you have to read the whole stupid thing to like it. Like with an anime i've seen Noir, i hated it, but everyone says it gets better as it goes on, now thats just dumb to me, it should be good, then gets better from there.

Artemis Fowl is pretty good. I finished Opal Deception several days after it came out, and regrettably, the series seems to be getting worse. The first book was wonderfully creative and the next two were good, but I think Eoin Colfer gradually lost it. Has anyone read the Supernaturalists? same author! It is really, really good! Much better than the already good Artemis Fowl!

Fool of a Took
06-15-2005, 01:26 AM
Agreed. The first two books are good, then the downward quality spiral begins. If it's boy-spy-wunderkind stuff you're after - Have you read the Alex Rider books? Written by Anthony Horowitz. Kind of junior James Bond. A good escapist read.

Hmmm..who chuld play Artemis Fowl? I don't know many child actors but maybe Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) could play him if he acted less sinister.

When I first read the novels a while back there was a page at the back promoting that "it was soon to be seen on the big screen" and that a movie was in production. Strange I haven't heard more about it though.

Maybe Holly Hunter (voice for Elastigirl/ not the nicest angel in A life Less Ordinary) could be Holly Short. Tommy Lee Jones would do well too! I loved the Artemis Fowl books! :) Artemis is definitely my favorite character and I love how he evolves throughout the series. Eoin Colfer is a great author, I really liked his book "Wish List" too. He's very original. Most of the fantasy books that I've read take place in the past or present so it was interesting to read a book that takes place in the future. About the movie, is it ever really coming out? I first heard about it around 5 years ago. It doesn't seem like they're making much progress.

I had heard how great these books were, so I read the first one and was only so-so with it. It didn't hold my interest and took me a while to complete it. I bought the second one and can't finish it. Part of my annoyance with the first book, was the level of unbelievablity (I'm not talking about the fairies, that's a given), but the train sequence. I used to work in the Nuclear Power industry on a fast attack sub. When he describes waste as green and glowing like a bad hollywood film, I actually laughed. Maybe I need to set aside what I know and push that to the back and I can enjoy them.

Sorry, I guess I'm being Debby Downer (oops, showing my age), but I thought another opinion was in order. I think he also made a couple of statements that were a bit liberal and offended my conservative inclinations. Maybe I misunderstood something there.

OMG what's the new book called?? Me musssstttt get it!!! :D

LOL

I really hope they still do the movie, though I think a teen should play Holly. She seems more like a teen/young adult (15-19) to me...in human years o'course.

I have read the first two books...Sorta got side-tracked when reading the third one.

Fourth book sounds like the storyline is getting corny.
But, have not read it, so can't fully judge.

Would not mind seeing a film of the first book, but after that, the film-makers would be trying too hard. Most Sequeals never pay off like the first film does.

I love Artemis Fowl! Well, I'm almost done with the first book, and I can already tell it's a series I'm going to end up loving.

I think the movie's coming out sometime in the summer.

Same here, I just went to look on Wikipedia, it has the full order there. Type in Artemis Fowl. I just can't remember it off the top of my head right now, or I'd tell you xD

Oh, and I finished the first book an hour or so ago 8)

Traitor, Sara. Heresy! :p

So far I've read the first three Fowl books. They're awesome. I'm still lost at how he planned the whole set-up in the Eternity Code. ^_^

there's a new artemis fowl book out, I saw it in waterstones today (but I couldn't get it cos I'd run out of book tokens =(.)
It looks really good, called artemis fowl and the time paradox. Has anyone read it?

I read it! Some of the themes are the same as
"Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony"
because it is about time travel.

But it's really good -- you get to see 10-year-old Arty before he discovered the fairy world. There's not enough Butler in it. I love Butler.

I love these books because we see Artemis going from a self-centered child to a young man who values his friends and his integrity. They're really quite good.
