I do believe, and I think that's one of the things, that made him able to make such very good anti-atheism or anti-anti-christism literature.
But if you mean he staid an atheist, I don't believe, because he became a Christian.

true he did reconform to a Christian but why he was a christian and then an Atheist is weird

He was raised as an Anglican, but then went off into materialistic atheism due to a number of factors - the pain of losing his mother, his horrible experience at an English boarding school, the fact that his family never practiced a living Christianity, and the influence of an atheistic tutor. The account of his return to Christianity is told in his autobiography Surprised by Joy and his "literary" autobiography Pilgrim's Regress.

Surprised by Joy is one of my favorite books :)
If you've never read it, I highly suggest you do. Not only is Lewis' account of his return to Christianity worthwhile to read, but I also feel this book really shows off his literary expertise. The subject matter of the book being autobiographical, the mood of it is sort of stripped-down... pure Lewis, very real. It truly displays his seemingly innate mastery of language and literature.
The man is SO talented.

Yeah, Lewis *was* an athiest. Guess who helped conform him? J.R.R. Tolkien!
This actually has little to do with Lewis, but does anyone know that Skander Keynes is an athiest? I think that is so sad. It went right to my heart when I heard that.

Yeah there's been lots of discussion about him being an atheist in other threads, so I won't go into what I think about it here.
I was a bit surprised when I read Lewis was an atheist, but people do turn to religion at various times in their life for whatever reason. It's quite interesting that he went on to write such Christian-themed novels.

It's Skander decision, not anyone elses!
J.R.R Tolkien was a good friend to C.S Lewis!

It's amazing how God used Tolkien and others to help Lewis come to Christ. In one of Lewis' documentary, he said it was like a battle that he didn't want to lose. It just shows you how Christ can use other Christians to bring atheists (and others) to Him. It's really incredible! :D

Whoa, have you got some books to read! Tolkien was a devout Catholic Christian, and his Lord of the Rings is one of the most powerful Christian myths ever written!

it didn't seem to me that he tortured anyone with the creatures....in my point of view, the creatures are a symbol to show evil and how good defeats the wickedness...

I'm part of the United Church of Canada (yes, it is a Christian faith), but I go to a Catholic school. It is easy to believe for me, because I have seen people change. My best friend and I promised we would always be best friends forever, but in Gr 4, we became enemies and are slowly starting to be friends again (almost 4 years later).
