I think Tilda Swinton is GREAT she's one of my favourite actresses!I know right now she's in New York for a movie shoot,a movie called Michael Clayton so I suppose she'll be appearing at the big screen soon..and I'm sure she's got more movie shoots on the schedule.I'll be looking for more information.

I hope one of those future movies will very soon be The Magician's Nephew. Her performance as the White Witch was captivating; she brought Jadis to life in every way, so that now every time I go back to read the Chronicles I will always have in my mind this image of Tilda Swinton holding her head up high with that regal and cold air - ice-cold performance! I am very excited to see how she will present us with the Empress of Charn. You're right, DE92, the woman is "GREAT"!

Yes,she is :D I'm very impressed by those who can play that kind of roles, when they in fact, are very nice in real life! Tilda Swinton is that kind of person. You only need to read an interview with her to find out she's a very nice person. Not at all like the White Witch.
I agree with you,Curumo,it would be wonderful if they brought her back as Jadis in MN! No one can play that role better than she can :)

Her acting was FLAWLESS! Amazing the way she pulled of the haughty character, I can tell you from experience that it is hard to do...

This was the first film I'd seen her in, but I have to say I was impressed. I mean, the character she plays is the epitome of all evil! Do you think if they'll make the Silver Chair, that she'll play the Green Lady? I always thought the White Witch and the Green Lady were basically the same person. She seems like a very talented actress. Hope we see her in more Narnia films.

I hope we do see Tilda in future Narnia flims that would be cool if she plays the green lady in the Silver Chair. She acted my favorite char in LWW

Yeah! I hope she does reappear, her other work is good too, but a lot of sexual content in her other movies. She also looks VERY different!!

Saruman
03-29-2006, 10:47 PM
There is a problem with the thought that she would reappear in The Silver Chair, because Jadis and the Green Lady (despite popular belief caused by misassumptions made concerning the BBC films and the popular Harper-Collins edition of LWW) are not the same person, and you can learn this through hints made in The Silver Chair itself.

It will be great fun to see her in Magician's Nephew, though! I wonder which actress they would choose to play the Green Lady? Hmm...interesting topic! ;)

03-30-2006, 01:16 PM
They'll probably find someone who sounds like her, and someone who might look a litle bit like her. But, people would probably get the two mixed up. I have to agree with CrystalWitch. I haven't seen her other movies because of the language and sexual content in them. She also looks very evil in this film!

03-31-2006, 05:52 AM
Yeah, really. It was a great touch in the battle sequence at the end, having her wearing Aslan's mane as a trophy. A horrid thing to do, and therefore completely in-character for the woman who used the Deplorable Word.

Another nice touch was having her sleigh pulled by reindeer like in the book, but her battle-chariot drawn by polar bears (slower, but FAR more vicious).

03-31-2006, 05:49 PM
Broken Flowers is already out, I personally didn't enjoy it much, very slow but Tilda's scene was great, unfortunately it was also the shortest. If you really want to see her in a beautiful film watch The Deep End or Conceiving Ada or Young Adam (for the over 18 crowd).

At least watch the ones she did with Derek Jarman, in time, of course. Really, The Last of England is so beautiful and wrenching.

Saruman
04-02-2006, 04:26 AM
Well, I would like to see at least a few other films, and if as you say this one is good, then I'll definitely have to consider it.

I remember, years ago, seeing bits and pieces of Orlando, but there were only two things I recall out of it: her sprawling on the ground, declaring "Nature, nature, I'm thy bride!" and the next moment being transposed to some different time, and then her extremely huge "couch" dress, as I call it - she sat down and took up an entire couch. Those ladies in the 18th century!

devils_advocate_for_evil
04-02-2006, 02:26 PM
Whoa...oook....Weird! Apparantly she had some weird love thing with her director or whatever. On her bio it said she and him had a "relationship."

writinghorses
04-02-2006, 06:51 PM
Which director would that be? If you're speaking of Derek Jarman, of course they a relationship of comrades and common-art and mutual respect. However, the man was gay and had a long time partner of his own. He himself described he and Tilda's relationship as... "...in a way I think I'm in love with both Tilda and (his partner)... maybe love isn't the right word... more of comradeship..."

devils_advocate_for_evil

Well unfortunately,I'm not in the "18 crowd" so obviously I shouldn't see most of her other films...oh I'm getting depressed now really :(..but all her films can't be that bad,can they?
Whatever,I watched Vanilla Sky for an hour once and I didn't see her in it (it was kinda strange,by the way)..is she really in that one?

writinghorses
04-03-2006, 03:11 PM
She has a cameo of sorts in Vanilla Sky playing a scientist in the cryogenics offices that what's-his-name visits. You'd definitely remember seeing her though, she looked a little different and she used an American accent but when she looks into the camera a person absolutely knows it's her. I don't think any actor looks into a camera the way Tilda does.

writinghorses
04-04-2006, 09:39 PM
That I seriously doubt, like anyone can read the minds of another person to predetermine their questions and script answers. Here's a chore for you, find the letter Tilda wrote to Derek Jarman for his memorial and read it, better yet find Edward II on DVD and listen to her give the speech. No one but her wrote or spoke that. Just a side note: Plenty of people like others who sound stupid (and are dangerous), how do you think Bush got reelected?

devils_advocate_for_evil

Yes,it was short at the time for the Narnia shoot, but on the newest image I've seen of her (from february,so it's not impossible she have cut it now)it was more like shoulder length. But indeed, the wigs she had in the movie was cool and very impressive :) I kinda loved it,though I don't think it was that lovely to wear... :)

No idea whatsoever, she's also in Michael Clayton though, I forgot that one. I know that at least Stephanie Daley is a real indie-type film and those often take forever to get to the general public, a crying shame because the independent films are usually so gorgeously written and performed (especially when Tilda's in them) and SD stars Amber Tamblyn as well, another wonderful and underrated actor.

Miss Swinton you gave an excellent portrayal of the 'White Witch', on the same level as Darth Vader from the Star Wars movies. I'm wondering if you ever get the chance to portray Jadis The White Witch again in 'The Magician's Nephew', if it ever became the next project after 'Prince Caspian', would you do it?

As Walden Media is producing the films in the same order as the books were published with The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian coming out before The Magician's Nephew and The Horse and his Boy, it seems unlikely that you will be available for the role of Jadis in that certain Narnian prequel as it will probably happen literally decades from now.

Let's hope it will not be decades from now!

Hopefully they can at least keep to a Peter Jackson spirit of filming: one year by year. Or, better yet, if they fear losing their White Witch, they can shoot whatever scenes necessary (provided, of course, that they've already found their Uncle Andrew, Digory Kirke, Polly Plummer, etc.).

If Tilda is not our Witch-queen in TMN, then I will be sorely disappointed. :(

I tell you, nothing beats the audience's first meeting with Jadis in the film. At first you think of her as this wonderful, lovely person, so sweet and so kind. And then as the film continues, and you get to know her as she truly is, the more hurtful it becomes to you (well, at least to me), wondering what happened to that sweet, strange lady in the beginning. And then you have the final transition during the battle, when she is in her full fighting regalia (and boy did Jadis LOVE war and fighting!), and where she is nothing but cold, cruel and merciless. I can go on and on about how Jadis was fully brought to life in this movie. :)

devils_advocate_for_evil
04-08-2006, 03:19 AM
Tilda, aside from being Jadis, is a great person in real life too! She is smart and she is FUNNY!! If you watch the "Narnia bloopers" she is always laughing and stuff. There is this one scene that shows the cast dancing, and she is like TOTALLY partying it down and pretending like she's holding a microphone. In another, she gargles on screen to get ready, the other one was when she was in the scene with skandar (where she wraps her arm around him) and Andrew goes "Tilda has her arm around him, and Skandar is LOVING it!" and Skandar goes "shut up!" but Tilda like cracks up! She is soooo awesome! :) She just lightens the mood and seems like a fun, awesome person!

I know what you mean, I was although thrilled to discover that by hitting the lion icon in the creatures of narnia section of the second disc, the color is not just blanched away... you get interviews with the actors who played them, best of all... The White Witch is a creature so you get a bit more on Tilda and what the filming process was like for her and such.

I know what you mean, I'm 5'4'', finished growing in the fifth grade. My family still thinks it's quite hilarious to put things in top cupboards where I can't reach them. I have to run down the hall and jump at the end to get to the linen closet for toilet paper (I know most people would just get a stool, but I find that to be quite unimaginative).

A new indie film Tilda is in. As far as I know so far SD has only been screened at Sundance and not yet made way to the general public. Indie films often take forever to reach the public, Thumbsucker, another one of Tilda's films, was completed in 2004 and didn't make it to DVD until just a couple months ago.

That's too bad, they are all so beautiful done. Even her camp one with Lynn Hershman Leeson is gorgeous (Tilda plays all four main characters). When you're old enough you should really watch Orlando and The Deep End, Young Adam if you can handle it. Tilda said her twins once watched half of Orlando before falling asleep, which is why she's not too worried about them seeing her films. You could watch Conceiving Ada, though, if you really want to see another one of Tilda's films. The copy I have isn't rated and doesn't contain any graphic subject matter, well, not too graphic anyway.

Well, first thing is, the person who writes the story, or novel, or whathaveyou, is almost never the person who adapts it for a screenplay. Unless, of course, you're actually writing a screenplay, it which case, it's not a novel. Secondly, you're right, the writer, unless also the producer and/or director really has no say in the actors who play the parts. Third, you will either have to sell your script to a company/person/whatever or produce it yourself. Fourth, good luck and I'd love to read it.

Read the book first, you should always do that anyway, and see how you feel about it. It's a beautiful story, magnificently shot and unfortunately too many people focus just on the sex scenes than what's actually happening in the story. I wasn't really fazed much by it, then again, not much fazes me to begin with. I'm more apt to speak out against unnecessary violence on primetime television which everyone's gotten so used to seeing.

Tilda can fit just about any role, so far, only from what I've seen, she's been: a prostitute, a Madonna, Queen of England, Queen of Narnia, a barge woman, three cyborgs, a geeky scientist, a mom from Tahoe, a hick, the angel Gabriel, a bisexual lawyer, a Victorian boy turned woman, the mum of children abused by their father, a magistrate, Ada Byron King, a bride, a nurse (two or three times over), a commune leader, a publicist, a cryogeneticist, a lesbian barkeep, a forensics psychologist; and that's just what I've actually seen.

Err... it's not rated. Inappropriate for youth, really. The Garden is one of the wonderful Derek Jarman's films, if you're at all familiar with his work you'll know that he created quite a controversial reputation as usually occurs with true genius and sensual honesty.

I think I will wait to see her in Magician's Nephew. It will be good and clean fun, and no doubt she will conquer the screen as she did in LWW!

Though it sounds like you've seen her in Conceiving Ada, writinghorses. I declare some interest as I've been fascinated by the life of her daughter, Anne, Lady Blunt. Though, from what I've read concerning the movie, it seems to be a little weird, apparently weaving in a lot of modernistic imagery. What is it all about?

Though, from what I've read concerning the movie, it seems to be a little weird, apparently weaving in a lot of modernistic imagery. What is it all about?

Conceiving Ada is about a modern day computer-genuis, Emmy, working to make a connection with Ada by going into the past. Emmy, succeeds in sending herself into the past and talks with Ada through her computer screen. Ada shows Emmy her memories of her childhood, marriage, children, work with Charles Babbage, various affairs and such. Emmy tells Ada she's discovered a way to clone her memory patterns through her own unborn child so that the world will know all of Ada's secrets as she died very young and without completing her work.
Beyond the story, the film was shot in a very interesting manner. All the shots with Tilda were composited with Photoshop after photographs of a Victorian hotel were downloaded into a computer and the film of Tilda against blue-screen was put on top of those photographs. Everything you see in the backround, furniture, people, etc. weren't actually in the scene while filming. Tilda happens to be so wonderful that you can't even tell she was acting, in essence, to nothing at all.

I'm very new to the Narnia movie ( though not the books). My very first look at Tilda Swinton was in the movie CONSTANTINE, in which she played an androgynous angel. My first thought was, who is that tall thin MAN? Because of her short hair, masculine clothing, slender frame, and height, I thought Tilda was a young man. A goodlooking young man. Then I was like, whoa, that's a very interesting looking stately woman!

After that movie, of course, I did not have any interest in her but her distinctive looks stood out. When I first rented the DVD Narnia and saw the movie for a first time just a week ago, I saw her as the White Witch and immediately did recognize her as the actress from Constantine. I found her name on the credits and did a search for her online as well as on ebay ( autographed White Witch picture, which I just bought).

I was pleasantly surprised to see her choice of very alternative and non-mainstream films. Actresses and actors who choose roles for their weight rather than the possible fame and wealth they can bring have always have my admiration.

In a strange way Tilda reminds me a bit of Cate Blanchett in the movie ELIZABETH...tall, regal, and fair.

I can totally identify with the kick-butt performance Tilda did in the movie...here was a woman who was more skilled with the sword than the GUYS on the battlefield. Beautiful, strong, inspiring fear and awe, here's an actress to equally be reckoned with. I'm glad she's gotten the recognition.

Haha I have naturally black hair so I can't dye it 'red red.' I did have super short punk hair at one time 20 years ago and had it purple...LOL

When I said Tilda looked better with red hair I think I meant more of a light red, like the way Cate Blanchett looked in the movie ELIZABETH...sort of a pale red, not fiery red. ;)

I was soooo mad when I typed in Tilda Swinton a few days later on ebay and found the book was gone. I guess someone either bought it or it didn't get relisted. I was going to buy that book. I hate that when you're psyched about an item, forget to bookmark it or watch it on ebay, and then it's gone...poof.

No I actually am only 5'4" and I don't have long legs...LOL. Someone as tall as Tilda Swintonwith those long legs can probably take one leap and outdistance me instantly.

I should be getting the other autographed picture of her either today or tomorrow, and I will also post a pic of that one here:)

I think Tilda Swinton was the backbone of the entire film, in terms of performance anyway. She was (as someone said before) flawless in her portrayal of Jadis; and if you watch the film as often as I do (last week I watched at least an hour of it every single night) you really do begin to notice the flaws in people's acting. Not, of course, that anyone else was bad atall - don't get me wrong, I watch the film to see my little Skandar - but she always gives such a perfect performance. And from just seeing her in the extras/making of book etc it must have been a real privelage to work with her. When my exams are over I'll get out some of her films. Whoo, I'd definitely be a Tildanite. :D

You'll find IceMaiden, that Blockbuster has very few of Tilda's films at all. The one in my town carries; Broken Flowers, Vanilla Sky, Adaptation, The Statement, The Beach, The Deep End and Young Adam. Vanilla Sky is hardly worth it, she has about 2 minutes of screen time and I can't stand Tom Cruise enough to watch the rest of the film. Broken Flowers is the same situation, but excellent if you like Bill Murray and the track is terrific. Alas, Adaptation is the same scene again, however, Nic Cage shines and Meryl Streep is always entertaining (though this is nobody's best work). The last four are pretty good, if you can get beyond Leo DiCaprio's acting in the Beach. The last two are definitely worth renting/owning/worshipping, some of her best work beyond Jarman and the rest of cast is wonderful in both and in The Statement, although I couldn't tear my eyes away from Jeremy Northam. Oh, I just remembered, Constantine, that'll probably be there, too. I, for one, by the time the credits rolled, was sitting in front of my telly with a stupified look on my face, I'm sure, going, "What?". But, Tilda makes one fine angel, a naughty angel, but a really gorgeous one.

LifeMaiden
05-23-2006, 05:23 AM
Okay thanks for the info. I didn't see Vanilla Sky because I can't stand Tom Cruise either. I used to think I was the only female who didn't go gaga over that sissy. And while I hated Constantine I did like her as the angel. In fact that movie was the first time I had seen Tilda Swinton, and she I recognized her as the White Witch instantly because of her strong, beautiful fair features. I thought she was very interesting as that androgynous angel. At first I thought she was a slender young man in that role.

I hate Tom Cruise :p Ok,I'm sure he's a nice actor but..it's just something with him that makes me feel sick.I dunno what it is actually...
As far as I know,I haven't seen any of Tilda's other films, but I definately know I have seen her somewhere before I saw Narnia..I just dunno where..it's kinda strange :)

I love it when an actress can be as versatile as Tilda. Not many actresses play controversial and different 'non commercial' roles. To me that defines what a true actor or actress is...someone who picks their roles not because of money or fame, but because it's something they believe in. I think Narnia really put Tilda on the map of fame though :D

I am hoping that since I am doing the letter with calligraphy on parchment paper and putting that Aslan sticker on there, and most likely planning to write in that style to all the cast members eventually, their representatives who sort through all their mail will notice my letters right away. :)
