Hey! Is anyone here into the Dune Chronicles?

I'm ashamed to say as a fantasy/sci-fi reader I had never read the Dune books! (don't stone me yet!) I just got my hands on a copy of Dune itself, and I'm saving up to buy the others. I'm halfway through Dune right now, and am really enjoying it. (though I'm angry about Leto; he was my favorite character...)

People, people! Letting the side down! I have read Dune, and own some of the other ones, I've started reading most of them but i tend to get sidetracked. I also own the David Lynch ((?) film on VHS, but always fall asleep watching it!

I've read the original "Dune" but I haven't gotten any farther in the series than that (the copy of the sequel that we own is falling to pieces, and I can't afford to go out and buy a new one at the moment). I'd have to say that Dune is probably one of the best science-fiction books that I've read. Frank Herbert does a great job of creating a unique culture and history for his world - in a way, it reminds me of what J.R.R. Tolkien did in LOTR.

Hopefully, I'll get some extra money to go out and buy the next couple books in the series soon! :-)

nay, i have not read the books.

Ohh! you must! But, to tell you the truth, I find the next books in the series don't really live up to the first. Its really amazing, though, how herbert creates such a fascinating world with all its religions, culture, histories, and languages.

It is one of the finest books of its type- although i must admit it's a bit too sci-fi fro me- I'm more of a swords, dragons and things made out of wood kinda girl

I havn't read it; is it completly clean? I won't be in the least ashamed of it if mama reads it to?

Ithilien

completely, but stay away from the new movie - my mum had to censor it

Which new movie? I've got the David Lynch one with Sting in on VHS but always fall asleep trying to watch it, is there another one?

GrayCloak

Well the sci-fi mini series wasn't exactly clean, actaully it was pretty bad at some points.

Ok, thanks; I think I will take a look at it.

the sci-fi series added a lot of un-neccesary scenes that were never in the book. Otherwise, it was quite true to the book (which I might add is quite devoid of romance). Also, stay away from the David Lynch movie. that was a complete insult to the book!

Ithilien

on second thought...it wasn't that bad....

I just relized that that might be misunderstood; I plan to look at the book(s), not the movie!

Ithilien

yeah, the movie is not worth anyone's time

I just want to revive this thread just in case there are a few stragglers out there that are a fan of Frank Herbert! I really need someone to have a good jaw about this with...desperately!

I hope this doesn't turn into a monologue...again...

Ithilien

yay! Response!

Dune is the first book in a series by Frank Herbert about the desert planet Arrakis. Its one of the top in sci-fi with a tinge political drama! Its immensely exciting!

What are these books about exactly?

GrayCloak

What are these books about exactly?

Political ambition - treachery - survival - and one man who supposed to be the savior to a people. They start out tracing the life of a young duke named Paul and how his family is moved to a dessert planet called Arrakis - from there they discover a plot against them on several sides - including assassination, usurpation, and betrayal.

Did I do them justice Ithilien?

did you say sci fi books?

Ithilien
06-11-2005, 09:21 PM
Yep! One of sci-fi's top, I might add. And Graycloak, no one could have put it better!

I do enjoy Sci Fi rather much. Allthough Romance is more my type. Speaking of which, I think I'll go steal Pride and Prejudice from my older sister later ;)

Sci-fi was my first love - It'll always have a soft place in my heart. You might like it more than you think as well, a lot of sci-fi and fantasy hold to similar themes - and Dune had some swords and sorcery elements to it, I thought.

Oh and Puddle_glum19 and Tarkheena_Finduilas22, for shame, Romance! Really? Ug, can't stand the stuff! ;)

'Dune' is one of the best-written Science Fiction books that I've read. Frank Herbert did an excellent job of creating an entire universe, filled with diverse peoples and cultures. If you're interested in Sci-Fi, I'd certainly recommend checking it out...

I agree! I don't think that there is any other person (besides the unsurpassable J R R Tolkien) that so detailedly (is that a word?!) created a world.

Romance is not my thing, but I must agree I really enjoy Pride and Prejudice and Rebecca and Wurthering Heights.

Dune changed my life. It changed the way I look at the world. It is really a series which either draw you in or repel you... there's no line between obsession and like here, because these books are so intricate and so gorgeously written. They belong to my all-time faves.
