What do you think of Laura Miller's essay comparing Lewis favorably with Baum, which you can read, for example, at http://hackvan.com/pub/stig/articles/Oz-vs-Narnia--uk-kids-fiction-is-more-real.txt ?
Other than the fact that Miller doesn't seem to speak favorably of Christian authors in general, she appreciates that British authors take children more seriously, and Lewis is no exception. I have read both Oz and Narnia, and I found the former clearly lacking in substance.
EDIT: hey you spelled Narnia wrong so fixed it for ya, so you look smarter, lol. Sincerely The faun near the lamp-post

ok, i don't really feel like reading this at the moment. Though from what i know of them, i think they are both cool actually. i've only seen the movies of the oz books basically, cause i've seen return to oz and as a child loved it, but i remember very little. Though my friends read it i think and said it was just so cool to read the book. So much darker.
Now to compare that with narnia, is interesting, as narnia is written with more happiness in it i think, even though there is strife and all, but the mood is never set in my mind that things are just gonna suck. Now oz i think is the other way around for me.
Well i hope to help with the fact that british authors take children more seriously, as i am going to try and write a childrens book myself that will be much more challenging that the regular stuff.

The Oz books are not dark. The movies (both of them) darkened everything and were not faithful. I actually thought "The Land of Oz", which was the second book, was the best of the series; after that, the Oz books degenerated into silliness and humor. By the 14th book, I was getting tired of Ozma and Dorothy.

I started this thread on an Oz forum. Since it relates to Narnia as well, I thought I'd post the link, here.

Notice that similarities are discussed in the thread.
