i have an idea. if anyone sees a message of me (and of someone else, because this isn't only a course for me) that doesn't make sense at all (it happends very often:D) you post my mistakes here
this is going to be a very long thread
i've a question first, i did it wrong in the "if you were a mod..." thread. i said something was an archif (but found out that word doesn't exist in english:o) so does anyone know how you call that place were all the old threads and posts are?

That's an archive, you were close, it's no problem. I'll be glad to help, I correct everyone's english, and I'll make sure for you, not just to correct, but explain why as well. :o

You're welcome. Lesson 1:
Capitalize, punctuate. :D

I'll help, as well.
Ok, as far as lesson 1 goes;
Capitalization (I hope u know what that means xD ) goes at the first letter of each word of each sentence that you write.
Examples:
S(S is capitalized)he does not want to go to the park.
F(Fis capitalised)or what is this used?
-----end of examples-----------------------------------------
Of course, you also ALWAYS have to capitalise the first letter of a persons name. Examples:
Sofia
Lieke
Tweetsie
Skandar
--------------end of examples----------------------------------
Punctuation:
In English, there are many different forms of punctuating words. Either you use them properly, or no one will really understand what you are saying because punctuation often goes in a word to replace a letter. Why would you need to replace a letter? Because in this day and age, many people use shortened forms of phrases, or words.
Such as;
You're not going there. (the ' takes the place of the letter A, which would be separated from the word 'You' with a space, of course. So the longer, easier version is this: You are not going there.)
Don't do that! You'll only be hurting yourself! (The O in 'not' of the phrase 'Do not' [shoretened to don't] is replaced with an ' and the W and I in the phrase 'You will' [shortened to you'll] is relplaced with an ' ,as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
You might be wondering what the ' are anyways? The ' is called an apostrophe. I imagine that it is used worldwide. :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, another very importnat ponctuation is the comma. The comma is this: ,
Examples:
You, missy, are not supposed to be eating that cookie. (the comma symbolizes a pause, sort of like a period [.]. I htink Tweetise can help you more with this one, I always depend on my reading skills to identify when to use it, I really don't know if it's after a verb or noun, or something like that, but I bet Tweetsie does. Anyways, here is a HUGE rule for commas: You ALWAYS have to insert a space right after you insert a comma! Example:
You, [space]missy, [space], stole the cookie from the cookie jar!
---------end of examples-------------------------------------------
Also, commas may be used when writing a list. For example:
So, first, we got the shields, and then we hoisted up the swords to the battlegrounds.
There was a dagger, healing potion, medium sword, large sword, and a bow and arrow.
(usually, you should end the list with the word "and" before the last object; such as AND the bow and arrow. and a space [of course] and comma rite after the second to last object, amking it ,and a bow and arrow.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for Quotation Marks.
When someone quotes another person (says exactly what the person that they are talking about said [you can find this is many interviews]), they should (but don't often) insert quotation marks to signify when a quote begins and when it ends. Example:
"I love fish!" said Skandar.
"Me, I'm dishonest. And you can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you have to look out for. Because you never know when they are going to do something incredibly stupid," exaplained Captain Jack Sparrow.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, as I have used in this post, you can use the same symbol as apostrophes to do quotation marks. But not to quote a person, just to make a cetrian word stand out, or maybe to quote yourself. Also, in books, the authors sometimes use it to show the thinking of a character (example: 'Should I be doing this?' Susan asked herself) It's less proffesional if you use it to quote people, such as in interviews or wirtten articles, though. I suggest using the " . Not the ' for quotation marks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, now a bonus, that Tweetise didnt include, but is my favourite.
BRACKETS AND PARANTHESES! :D
Brackets are these: [ ]
and parantheses are these: ( )
Parantheses are used to signify the beginning and end to an extra thought, or feeling aobut what you are writing. Just take a look at all the ones I have posted, and you might be able to see what I mean.
Brackets are used inside of parantheses for the same reasons.
Examples:
Btw (in case you already didn't know)....
Brackets (which are one of my fave things [they also stand for the little rubber band thingies on braces!])....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, i that's all I can think thats "basic" enough for now! OH! and ALWAYS insert a period (.) at the end of each and every sentence that you make!

You sure did:D. In The Netherlands, we use almost the same things as you English people do. Thanks.

Yes, i do, but when i write English it is easier to speak it, you know some more words. But you are right, speaking English is much more important for me, the only place were i am writing it is here and sometimes at school. It is still very usefull:)

When you are writing english almost the whole time and when you have friends who live across the ocean who call you very often, then both writing and speaking english is very needed.
I notice that I am replacing dutch words in english more and more often :D
An example: Ik ga naar huis toe (I'm going home) and I say: Ik ga to home nu.
It is so ridiculous sometimes.

lol:D, you really do that??
But you are right, when you have friend who are English you are forced to speak it. I was planning to go to a English course this summer in Withby, but this year they don't give it. Maybe they do it next year and i can go then, cause i know English is very important, especially when i want to do something in politics (<-- is that the right word?) later. This forum is also great for your English, i can't speak Dutch here (except in the Dutch-thread ) so i have to speak English, and i notice that i can do it a little bit better then before (1.5 year ago, when i had not joined the forum yet), and i can do English better in school. But i can read the language (most of times:), and i can understand what people saying (listening) but the writing and the speaking are both very hard for me. But i am still young, maybe one day....:D
I have a question. Does anyone know how you call the boss of a country (if you undrstand what i mean)? I don't mean the king or the queen, but that other guy.
Something in me said that it was something like 'prime-minister', but i am not sure.
Someone please help

Yep, it is the Prime-Minister. A kingdom has a Prime-Minister. A Republic has a President.
Lieke, I can tell you, with writing english almost the whole time, you will improve your english almost unnoticed. I go to more than one board each time. I have four sites I regular visit and the members can't speak dutch, so I am forced to write english and in almost two years, my english has improved so much more.
