View Full Version : When did you first hear about Narnia?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering when you all first heard about Narnia (you probably guessed that from the title :)). My first time was a long time ago when my dad found this new book called The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. All the while when I grew up I heard my dad reading them out loud. Then when I got older I started reading them myself. Then I heard about this new movie coming out, and I knew that it would be the next Lord of the Rings. So I went searching for Narnia fan sites, found this site, and joined.

Anyone else have a story about their "Narnian experience"? ;)

The first memory I have of the CoN...

...I'm about four or five years old, sitting on my aunt's couch, and she is reading TLTWaTW to my sister and I...

*sigh*
I've been hooked ever since.

hmm, i know i knew of them as a kid. My mom would read them to me just before i went to bed, that was always really cool. I think i may do something of the like for my own children. I think that might be why i love reading so much, cause i got excited about stories i heard and stuff. Eventually i got too cool for it so started reading them on my own, lol. Though i never finished the series cause then i hit a stage in my youth where i though reading was uncool, and so now i regret that as i need to reread the whole series i think.

I first heard about it from my Mom, who told me when I was about seven that the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe was a really great book. A year later I started to get it read out loud to me but was so enthralled by it that I picked it up myself and finished it. I read the rest of the Chronicles soon after. They were my favorite books at the time, until I was introduced to the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

hehe, crjr9833. That's funny. The Narnia Chronicles were my favorate books till I heard about LotR too. But I still like C.S. Lewis better than J.R.R. Tolkien.

When I was very young, the Chronicles of Narnia was simply a set of dusty old books that had belonged to my mom when she was a child. I always thought they were "Silly Grown-Up Books." Then I saw the BBC live action version of LWW, and I loved it. After that I decided to read the books. I read them again, and again, and again. By the fourth time around, I was totally hooked. Today I am a fanatical, obsessive Narnia fan! (now I read the whole series at least 3 times a year :D )

Hey there Equus, great to see you here!
I first had LWW read to me when i was about 4/5, and it all started from there, I'd read all the CoN by the time the BBc series came out, i also had the old Michael Horden tapes and used to play them non stop, and the rest as they say, is history...

I know that my mother first bought the series for me when I was nine or ten, and I read it immeadiately, and have adored it ever since. However, I know that I had read at least LWW years before then, and can't remember when I first found out about it. All I can remember is as a child, always naming Lewis when anyone asked me who my favorite author was.

Oh, hmmm...I think my mom read me and my siblings LWW, and then stopped after that. I was 4 I think. I read the series later when I was 7-9. And of course I've read them after that!

When I was in first or second grade we were going to take a field trip to see a children's theater production of LWW, which I had never heard of. My dad had a box set of CoN which he'd received as a gift from my mom's parents many years before. I ended up reading LWW--I think it was before the trip.

Thereafter I read the CoN several times as a kid. I've probably read them at least five times, but haven't for several years. Before the movie comes out I plan to reread at least LWW though!

Well, I haven't been reading them for along time. I've known of them. But never starting reading them till sometime last year and I've been hooked ever since!:) My mom bought me: The Magicians Nephew because I can only read books about like adventures and mystery. I hate like story's about peoples lifes, there just boring. So these books are the books for me! :)

well, i don't know them for a very long time, my uhr... (where's my dictionary??) relegion teacher in the 2e class from middle school told us a lot about the books, and said that if we were able to read one, we must do that! so when i heard that a boy in my church had the books, i'd ask if i could borrow one, and i liked them somuch that i never stopped reading them again, long live the relegion theachers

I must admit that I didn't 'own' the books for a few years- the original copies I had were given to my cousins when I was about 12yrs old, but thankfully my last boyfriend gave me the old 1982 boxset for Christmas in '03- it was the best thing about him!

My sister, I think, got the books from my grandmother as well as the Hobbit, but I didn't read either for quite some time. I remember one day I went to Sunday school and the teacher was reading LLW, some time after that I took my sister's set and read them chronoligically (sp?), but I read the LLW before I did that. That's the best way I think (start with LWW, then MN, then LLW again, HHB, PC, VDT, SC, then the LB). I admit, I read the Hobbit after I finished LotR which I only read after seeing FotR *hangs head in shame* I did redeem myself though by reading appendices, the UT, Silmarillion, and some of the HoME (mostly the lays of Beleriand). Sorry If I lost some of you.

faeriechylde
02-06-2005, 11:06 PM
Wow, Dryad, you've outdone me, anyway. I have read the appendices (several times), but I haven't read the whole Silmarillion or any of those other works by Tolkien, except LotR (10 times and counting :)), The Hobbit, and everything in Bantam's old Tolkien Reader, plus Tolkien's Letters. Okay, so I guess I have read more than I thought, haha. But anyway, you don't have to be ashamed for reading LotR after watching FotR (the movie). At least you chose to read the books and not say, "Why read the books when I can watch the movies?" like so many others have.
I hope no one does that with the CoN once the movies come out, but they probably will. It's sad.

I was watching the tv-series as a 5 or 6 year old and I wept as Aslan died on the stone table to save Edmund.

Now I understand this symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ, who died to save you and me, and the whole world. May more souls be won, that they may praise His glorious name - Jesus; the True King!

Amen, Lionheart!
I think the great thing about the Narnia stories is that they put Christian themes such as Jesus' sacrifice for us into a story that children can understand and relate to. This is a great way to soften their hearts to know Aslan "by another name."

I was in third grade - eight years old. My uncle (a priest) brought them up to read to us, and we soon had the whole set. It was good that I was introduced when I was, because the following years of my life were very difficult, and I was able to take refuge in Narnia. I've been doing so ever since. (I've also taken refuge in Middle Earth, but Narnia was my first love.)

Well at my old school,we had these theme days twice in a year, and when I was in 1th or 2nd grade, the theme was books.I was already hooked on Harry Potter (I've always thought that I read Narnia BEFORE Harry Potter, but after a whole lot of thinking,I have realized that was not the case)and loved Fantasy books in general,so the Fantasy section did really catch my attention.I saw the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings books there, books that were so familiar to me,but beside them there was a couple of other books, all of them with the title Narnia, which I didn't know anything about.A friend of mine said she had read them, and I asked her curiously what they were about. She told me about the magical land of Narnia, about Aslan the Lion who created it,and I got really really interested. So,during a visit to the library,I started searching for the Narnia books and found LWW,which I started reading.And....yeah,that's the beginning of the story for me :D

My school that I go to is totally focused on Narnia. Our school mascot is Aslan and all of the teachers loved reading the books to us. I remember I was in the third grade and my teacher read us The Magician's Nephew. I really liked it, but I didn't know that that book was a part of a series called The Chronicles of Narnia. I thought it was just one great book all alone. Then, my teacher in 4th grade showed us the BBC version of LWW and I thought it was pretty weird. Not much later from then, I found that those were two books from the same series and that there were more books. Once I read the series for myself, I felt like I couldn't stop reading. I am totally obsessed with anything Narnia and C.S. Lewis now!:)

Like most of you all, I've known about Narnia since I was VERY young. I actually have a picture of me at 2 years old being read LWW by my older sister!

My sister and I would play school alot, and it involved lots of out-loud reading on her part (she was the teacher). I always thought our Closest took us to Narnia but I was scared of the White Witch so I never really looked for Narnia in there. Most kids had a Monster, I had Jadis in the Closet. :P When my sister grew out of the whole Playing School deal. Narnia was lost for a while, about 4-5 years.

When I was around 9 we had a Summer reading list, In the list there was "The Magicians Nephew" at the moment I didn't realize Narnia was more than just LWW. So I started reading it, I was a bit clueless not to notice it was Narnia till I was about Half Way through! Then Narnia came back to me! This time, I DID check my closet :D I was very disappointed.

As the years went on I read all 7 Books. Then Once again Narnia went back to being Forgotten for a bit.

In the 7th Grade I was fortunate to have a "Narnia Freak" Creative writings teacher. She brought the Narnia Obsession back out of me. All of my papers from there on Involved Narnia in some way. I then realized how much I liked The second book: Prince Caspian, and read it more than 6 times.

Its been 5 years since I last seen my Creative writings teacher. But Narnia has Never been forgotten after that year! When I saw the LWW poster in the Movies I flipped. Then 2 Christmas ago, I received The Chronicles of Narnia book set with all 7 books, along with "Finding God In The Land Of Narnia" book. Its been great reading them all over again! My Prince Caspian read count has gone up to 9 times now!

God Bless

When I was like seven I went to the library with my dad and I saw the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe book on the shelf. I got it and read it, then I borrowed the next book, until I finished all seven of the books. I was really excited to hear that they had made a movie. I really loved the movie and can't wait to see the next one.

I was in need of a new book and it was about two weeks before the movie came out. I never knew that there was going to be a movie or that there was such thing as Narnia. I went to the bookstore and they had this new edition (movie edition) with a really nice cover (Yes,don't judge a book by it's cover but it was Shiny! :D).
I bought LWW (cause I didn't know that there was the Magicians Nephew). I read it and became immediately hooked. The movie came out and i had read till the Voyage of the dawn Treader. I couldn't find the Silver Chair and the Last battle in the same edition so I bought them from Amazon and well...that's pretty much it... :D

When I was really little (I think that watching the movies is one of my earliest memories), my Grandmother had the BBC movies. The first time I read any of the books was in fifth grade with LWW. The first time I read the whole series was when the new movie came out. That is when I first made it a point to actually get my hands on the whole series, I had not liked the Movie of SC as a kid so I had never made any attempt to finish the series.

I heard about it years ago when my grandparents gave me the first ever "Narnia" moive. It was called "The Lion, the Witch, And the Waredrobe. The chronicals of Narnia." I believe we still have it. Me and my brother thought it was everything. We loved it. I now know it is nothing compared to the newest one.

Call me crazy, but I discovered Narnia through Harry Potter. :D I WAS A TOTAL HARRY POTTER GEEK BEFORE! ( ) More geeky than Hannah. XD Then I noticed a book beside the Harry Potter and Order of the Pheonix in the bookstore. I was like 'The Chronicles of Narnia.. Hmm.. What's this?' Then I saw that it had a movie coming out. So after that, I began searching in Yahoo! about Narnia: Images, Websites, Facts. To tell you the truth, when I found out the names of the cast, my first impression was 'What kind of a name is Skandar??!?' ROTFL!!! OMG, when I still remember it today, it still makes me laugh. Then one day when I was desperately searching for tidbits about Narnia, I found a link on Yahoo!: NarniaFans.Com. So I clicked it. And voila! I arrived here! :D

I was about 10, I guess, and I found the books in a Christian book store. My mom bought one for me and one for my sister - we had no idea there was an order to follow, though it seemed like a series, as all book covers were alike. So I ended up reading The Silver Chair first, followed by The Horse and His Boy, The Voyage of the Dawn Trader and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, all in a week! :D Later I looked for the last three, and re-read them in a more senseful order. :p
