Articles of Piracy
Pirates, lived by codes. Articles were drawn up and the whole crew signed them in agreement, Captains were elected, and rules followed. Typically the Articles were a hold over from Privateering. See that section for an explanation between this fine distinction.

The articles were drawn up by the crew, and everyone would then sign the contract that bound the ship together. The following is an example of the Articles of Piracy. These were the articles used by the ship Revenge which was commanded by Captain John Phillips.

These articles are typical of the laws that pirate crews would agree to. In the movie The Black Swan, there is an episode where Tyrone Powers discusses articles. As in real life, the articles in the movie stressed primarily the division of Booty.

Article One
Every man shall obey civil command; the captain shall have on full share and a half in all prizes. the Master, Carpenter, Boatswain, and Gunner shall have one share and quarter.

Article Two
If any man shall offer to run away, or keep any secret from the Company, he shall be marroon'd with one bottle of powder, one bottle of Water, one small Arm, and shot.

Article Three
If any Man shall steal any Thing in the Company, or game, to the value of a piece of Eight, he shall be Marroon'd or shot.

Article Four
If at any Time we should meet at another Marrooner (that is, Pyrate) that man shall sign his Articles without Consent of our Company, shall suffer such Punishment as the Captain and Company shall think fit.

Article Five
That a man that shall strike another, whilst these Articles are in force, shall receive Moses's Law (that is 40 Stripes lacking one) on the bare Back.

Article Six

Machiathemarshwiggle rolled over in bed and stared at the dusty celing of the ship's hull. The events of the last day still running through his mind... The capture of Jack the monkey.... the battle.... His own near murder... the escape and most troubling of all... the absence of the Captian...What had happened to detain the captian from leading and assisting them in their time of need? Why had he Attacked the Knights for no apparent reason? How could they bring down the Knights' defenses? Who will be the Knights' king? What's for breakfast? And as this last though went through the Pirate's mind he remembered just how hungry he really was the last thing he had eaten was a slab of cold mutton for breakfast last morning. Machiathemarshwiggle hauled himself to a standing position and groaned. His neck was a bit sore from being grabbed many times yesterday. Machiathemarshwiggle grabbed his cutless and other weapons swept on his hat. He proceeded onto the deck which was empty save for Jack the monkey who was busily eating an apple he had stole from the galley. "Last one too, probably." grumbled the Pirate as he passed the monkey and entered the galley. Supplies were low and not very filling on the ship lately. "Pehaps if the knights hadn't pierced the new barrels of food with their flaming arrows we whould have something decent to eat." After a few minutes of searching the Pirate found a reasonably good apple and proceeded back onto the deck. It was still morning and the air was still fresh. Machiathemarshwiggle decided to have a climb on the ropes and then see what his shipmates were up to.

"ARRRR!" Thedryadhobbit, also known as The Twilight Terror, scourge of the seven seas, faced the morning sun and let out a piratey yell. She thought it was about time for the sun to show it's scurvy face. She had not slept all night, for as the new Gunner on the flagship of the pirates of the forums, she had to make sure that all thier cannons and ammunition were ready for the new assualt on the Knights of Narnia. She pushed her deep red bandanna off her long, curiously braided dark hair, and waved it in the air when she saw her fellow Corsair, Machiathemarshwiggle come up onto the deck, munching an apple. "It's probably the last one on board, that Marshwiggle eat's apples like they grew on trees" reflected The Twilight Terrror, completely missing the irony of her statement. Pulling her bandanna back on her head, The Twilight Terror went to the ships largest cannon and made a tiny adjustment to it, since she had seen Jack the Monkey hopping around on it during the night. She positioned it perfectly, knowing that today she would not be whiling away her time idly on the Last Post game. Today she would spare no effort to be victorious over those squiffy landlubbers, the Knights of Narnia! A smirk adorned her red lips as she gazed along the trajectory of the cannon to the castle of the Knights of Narnia. Today they would be victorious!
