Finrod

Ok, so he have a Narnian trivia on this board so how about a Tolkien Trivia based on his works (LOTR, Hobbit, Sil, UT, HOME, etc).

Rules pretty much same like the other one.

Lets start off with an easy one. ;)

Q: Who founded the Kingdom of Nargothrond?

LucyGoosey
12-14-2004, 11:23 AM
Finrod founded it.!

Finrod

Narniannymph
12-15-2004, 10:12 PM
I'm thinking three although I know there were at least two on the stairs.

Finrod

Finrod
12-15-2004, 11:52 PM

Q: Whats the name of Fingolfin's horse?

Daughter of Eve
12-22-2004, 11:37 PM
Rochallor!

Who loved Galadriel? (Aside from Celeborn)

GrayCloak
12-23-2004, 01:14 AM
I suppose you want a better answer than Gimli, as well...;)

Wasn't it the creator of the Elessar? Is his name Enerdhil of Gondolin? I can't really remember exactly, but as my fleeting mind recalls he asked her what she desired above all else and Galadriel answered that she wished to see the green lands of Valinor; thus the green stone of the Elessar.

Warrior-Poet51088

A: 4 originally. After that 1 ran up.
Yes, in the EE we see what happens to that "one", which is not shagrat, who ran back to "stick" Frodo.

Since Grey didn't post a question, I will:
In RotK(book), who does Peregrin marry, and what is the name of their child?

Daughter of Eve
12-23-2004, 11:48 AM
Yes, other than Gimli too. :) There were two possible answers, the creator of the Elessar, Celebrimbor of Hollin, or Feanor.

Aragorn, I know Pippin married Diamond of Long Cleave... but I don't remember their child's name...

GrayCloak
12-23-2004, 01:01 PM
Faramir! They named him Faramir!

How many children did Sam have; and what was his occupation once returning to the Shire?

Daughter of Eve
12-23-2004, 05:36 PM
He had thirteen. And he was elected as Mayor of Hobbiton. :D

Who did Eomer marry and what was his son's name? ;)

Between_the_Worlds
12-24-2004, 11:01 AM
I know that Eomer married Lothiriel, but I don't know their son's name.

GrayCloak
12-24-2004, 03:53 PM
Their son was Elfwine the Fair, right? At least I think it is....

Q: What was the name of Aragorn and Arwen's son?

lsipher
12-24-2004, 07:11 PM
A: Eldarion.

Okay, here's an easy one...
Q: Where did Aragorn first see Arwen?

- Lou

In the book, Aragorn first saw Arwen after the feast at Rivendell I think. It's funny, Arwen's name is never even mentioned in TTT (the book). But she's in TTT the movie.

GrayCloak
12-30-2004, 04:36 PM
Prince Corin you're right; in the book FOTR Aragorn did first see Arwen in the Hall of Fire, but they had met many times before that. Remember that Aragorn was Elrond's foster son, and in the apendixes under 'The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen' we find out that they met for the first time some sixty years prior to that on a bridge in Rivendel.

And yes Arwen is in the TT movie, but not in the book...don't even get me started on that....*grumbles* ;)

Warrior-Poet51088
12-30-2004, 05:08 PM
Well, you do know that they were planning on having Arwen lead the Elves who fought at Helm's Deep, instead of Haldir, right?

crjr9833
12-30-2004, 05:12 PM
That would have bad if Arwen led the Elves to Helms deep because then they would be focusing more on romance than on what this story is really about. Also there's two l's there GrayCloak, in Rivendell I mean. And here's a good one.
What are two names, one for Men and one for Elves, Middle Earth's God?

GrayCloak
12-30-2004, 05:44 PM
Oops, sorry. I know there are two 'L' in Rivendell (just check my 'location') I just don't have my contacts in and I can't really read what I'm posting.

And are you looking for Eru and Iluvatar?

Prince Corin
01-01-2005, 03:33 PM
Ok, here's a question. Well, not exactly a question, but close enough.

Everybody list as many of Aragorn's other names as you can.

Capstick
01-01-2005, 03:41 PM
Well, lets see: there's Estel, Ellessar, his alter-ego "Strider"...

That's all I can think of for now. I'll let some of the hard-core fans (i.e., "Ringers") finish off the ones that I don't know.

Warrior-Poet51088
01-01-2005, 04:50 PM
Elfstone, Elessar, Estel, Longshanks, The Renewer, Thengel of Rohan, Ecthelion of Gondor, Telcontar, Strider, and isn't there some reference to him as "Beren"?

GrayCloak
01-01-2005, 05:22 PM
I think; but maybe just in title. And isn't he once reffered to in mention of Kingsfoil, or Athelas?

Prince Corin
01-01-2005, 05:37 PM
I've never heard of him being Beren, Kingsfoil, or Athelas, but you've forgotten Wingfoot, the name that Eomer gives him.

Ok, someone else can give the next question. :)

Capstick
01-01-2005, 07:09 PM
Thanks Gray and Aragorn! lol, I knew you wouldn't let me down...

There is only one Unabridged recording of LOTR...who reads this recording?

Prince Corin
01-02-2005, 02:32 PM
Elessar, Strider, ummm..oh dang..what did Bilbo call him in Fellowship?
Oh yeah Chris! I forgot about "The Dunadan." Thanks for reminding me. :)

Arathornia of Rivendell
01-03-2005, 10:49 AM
And isn't he once reffered to in mention of Kingsfoil, or Athelas?
Aragorn called a plant Athelas, the other name being Kingsfoil. And Beren was the name of the Mortal that fell in love with Luthien Tinuviel, the first Elf to ever embrace mortality for love of a mortal. :)

There is only one Unabridged recording of LOTR...who reads this recording?

Oh darn. I have this recording I think. Is it Brian Sibley? Just a guess. :D

GrayCloak
01-03-2005, 11:56 AM
Hmm. I own the BBC radio drama with Brian Sibley, but it's abridged in several places (No Tom Bombadil, and no Gildor-will those two ever catch a break?) I don't know if there's an unabridged version or not, but I never saw one when I bought the BBC.

Doesn't Tolkien do a reading? I once heard him sing several of the songs from the book like 'Troll sat alone' or 'the Lay of Luthien and Beren'? Oh well, that would be my guess anyway.

Warrior-Poet51088
01-03-2005, 11:58 AM
I love that little song about the troll! It's always stuck in my head!(at least, whenever I'm reading LotR!)

Arathornia of Rivendell
01-03-2005, 12:28 PM
Ok thanks GrayCloak: I haven't listened to it in a looonnnnggg time, so I couldn't remember. :D

Prince Corin
01-04-2005, 03:43 PM
Ok, here's a question:

Q: What are the names of all 13 dwarves in The Hobbit?

Arathornia of Rivendell
01-04-2005, 04:31 PM
Balin, Dwalin, Boffin, Bombur, Bofur, Bifur, Gloin, Oin, Ori, Thorin, Fili, Kili, and Bilbo the burglar. :D

How old was Aragorn when he and his mother arrived at Rivendell?

Prince Corin
01-04-2005, 06:54 PM
Not quite, Arathornia. You left out Dori and Nori, and you put in Boffin. Also, Bilbo isn't a dwarf. The answer is:

Balin, Dwalin, Kili, Fili, Ori, Dori, Nori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Thorin.

Arathornia of Rivendell
01-04-2005, 10:33 PM
Oh man! I always forget those two, and Boffin sounds like it belongs, right? ;) Just Kidding! :D
No seriously, thanks for the correction, Prince Corin. :D

Can my question still stand though?

GrayCloak
01-05-2005, 11:55 AM
Aragorn was two I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong-it's been a while with the apendixes.

here's a new question:

What was the name of Elrond's wife, and who were their three children?

Warrior-Poet51088
01-05-2005, 12:06 PM
Don't know his wife's name, but his children were: Arwen, Elrohir, and his twin brother.........just forgot his name.
Garn!

Prince Corin
01-05-2005, 01:52 PM
His wife was Celebrian, and the 3 children were Ellandan, Elrohir, and Arwen. Celebrian was the daughter of Galadriel.

Q: In TTT movie, Gandalf leads Eomer and 2,000 horsemen to Helms Deep. In TTT book, what does Gandalf lead to Helms Deep?

Warrior-Poet51088
01-05-2005, 02:58 PM
He leads 1,000 foot soldiers, whose commander is..........somebody. Erkenbrand?

Arathornia of Rivendell
01-05-2005, 03:32 PM
Aragorn was two I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong-it's been a while with the apendixes.

*looks in apendices* Yes you are correct! I was actually thinking he was only a year, but I stand corrected. :D

Prince Corin

Right Aragorn. It was Erkenbrand.

GrayCloak

It was Quickbeam-he was hasty-hence the name. And sorry that your first question got lost crjr; but I was wrong anyway in what I would have guessed.

Sooooooo:

What are the names of the Valar in Arda?

rosymole
01-08-2005, 12:04 PM
all of them? crikey!
Manwe, Varda, Yavanna, Ulmo, Nienna, errrrr Orome, errrrrr help! My memory is like an old tin bucket- full of holes! I could have listed types of cheese with greater ease

When Frodo says i can't do this sam were is he and what does sam say back to frodo after he says that?

rosymole
01-11-2005, 12:33 PM
Hi Dark Magician Girl, welcome to the site! Me thinks you need a nickname!

Are you referring to the film there or the book? (i'm assuming the film but don't want to jump to conclusions...)

crjr9833
01-11-2005, 12:36 PM
Their at Osgiliath, I think...i don't remember what sam says back though.
It takes place towards the end of The Two Towers.

Prince Corin
01-11-2005, 02:34 PM
I only know of Yavanna Nuenna Ulmo Varda and Manwe that's all but anyways here's my question

Sam says back: "I know. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are." Then I think he gives the speech about the stories that really mattered.

Who was the original Dark Lord, (Sauron's boss), and which Valar was he most afraid of?

Warrior-Poet51088
01-11-2005, 03:15 PM
Sauron's boss was Morgoth, I think(I only read the first two sections of The Silmarillion).

Dunno who he was afraid of.........

Daughter of Eve
01-12-2005, 04:48 PM
Thengel of Rohan, Ecthelion of Gondor

First off, I must correct something. Thengel was the father of Theoden, and Ecthelion the father of Denethor. Neither were names of Aragorn. I know he went by Thorongil in Gondor, but I"m blanking on what he went by in Rohan.

As to who he was afraid of, I'm assuming you are referring to Melko/Melkor/Morgoth and he was most afraid of Manwe.

Prince Corin
01-12-2005, 07:48 PM
Manwe? I thought he was afraid of Tulkas.

Daughter of Eve
01-12-2005, 07:54 PM
Maybe it was Tulkas... Hmm... I know that Manwe was like the same powerwise as Melko...

Yeah, I think it was Tulkas... according to my 12 yr old bro who just read Sil.

GrayCloak
01-12-2005, 08:32 PM
I'm positive it was Tulkas; Manwe and Morgoth seemed equal in power. Doesn't the Sil say something to the extent that they were counted as 'brothers' in the eyes of Eru?

rosymole
01-13-2005, 10:27 AM
Yup Manwe and Morgoth/Melkor were brothers - I suppose that helps give everything balance - with the good vs evil power struggle thing

TSTer
01-21-2005, 09:27 PM
Definetly Tulkas (the valient, the mighty). Manwe was very powerful and wise but usualy kept to himself.

Since no one has posted a new bit a trivia I shall take the liberty of keeping the game rolling.

What symbol or device did Elendil the Tall use as a personal badge?

DryadofLanternWaste
01-22-2005, 04:45 PM
isn't it a white tree under seven stars in a sable field?

What was the name of Turgon's wife who died crossing the Grinding Ice?

TSTer
01-24-2005, 12:20 AM
No. The white tree and the seven stars were a symbol for both Gondor and the line of kings. What I asked was for a 'personal badge'.

DryadofLanternWaste
01-26-2005, 12:04 AM
How many guesses before one is required to shut up? I'm going to try again TSTer. If one doesn't know can one look at other sources or is that deemed cheating?

It's a matter of honour really- you should try to think of the answer unaided (you'll only be letting yourself down..!), but if it gets to a point of clarification then certain texts can be consulted-full references however must be provided, and NO David Day! ( i don't think he's as awful as some people, but it may be best to keep him seperate [Robert Frost is definately allowed tho!])

As per the number of guesses- as many as it takes but without getting silly:-)

GrayCloak

DryadofLanternWaste

The Vanyar were a golden haired people, is that what you wanted? There was a Noldorian(sp?) elf, one of Finwe's sons whose hair was golden and his descendants had golden hair too (but his mother was a Vanya)... that was Finarafin, I think... Or were you asking for the Chieftain of the Vanyar?

*eye begins to twitch*
I just don't get why people want to debate this so badly. Because I figured somebody would say that, Ima go get my copy of Fellowship........

OK. A couple pages before "Lothlorien," chapter 6 in book 2, it says, "The Balrog reached the bridge...His[Gandalf's] enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings. It raised the whip, and the thongs whined and cracked. Fire came from its nostrils. But Gandalf stood firm.........The Balrog made no answer. The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew. It stepped forward slowly on to the bridge, and suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall.........."

I dunno, but that sure sounds to me like the Balrog had wings.................And if anybody's gonna ask for page numbers, I didn't give 'em because I have a really old edition, so don't ask what page I found that on, cuz you won't get an answer.

Dernhelm
02-12-2005, 11:31 AM
Sounds pretty definate; what do they debate about?
I mean, what matireal< do they use to confuse things?

GrayCloak
02-14-2005, 11:37 AM
lol, I remember the old, Balrog has/doesn't have wings debates, people used to take the quote: 'shadow about it reached out like two vast wings' and emphasize the 'like' saying 'see it didn't have WINGS it had a shadow LIKE wings that surrounded it.' Let's just forget that in the Sil the Balrogs rushed to Morgoth's aid from Angband to Lammoth in a matter of moments. Just seems like to go that far, wings certainly would have helped.

-Of course, Balrogs seem to also fall off things alot, so I don't think they're too good as using thier wings. j/k.

GrayCloak

Q. What was written on Turin's tomb, and beneath it?

Hi, Dryad! The quote with your posts provoked me to write this, about a hidden point in LOTR. The spot in Lothlorien where Aragorn and Arwen pledged their troth was the same place Aragorn tells Frodo is 'the heart of elvendom in middle earth'...This scene concludes saying that Aragorn came there 'never again as a mortal man'. Yet this is the place where the widowed Queen Arwen seeks solice after Aragorn dies; I think Tolkien here hinted that Aragorn came to comfort her in spirit until they could be reunited in death...Maybe, like Luthien and her mortal mate, Aragorn and Arwen met and walked alive again before passing from the world entirely. (I hope so!)

You got it! This was said to the Ainur after the song ended. Here's the entire paragraph (one of my absolute favorite pieces from Tolkien):

"Thou Melko shalt see that no theme can be played save it come in the end of Ilúvatar’s self, nor can any alter the music in Ilúvatar’s despite. He that attempts this finds himself in the end but aiding me in devising a thing of still greater grandeur and more complex wonder: -- for lo! through Melko have terror as fire, and sorrow like dark waters, wrath like thunder, and evil as far from my light as the depths of the uttermost of the dark places, come into the design that I laid before you. Through him has pain and misery been made in the clash of overwhelming musics; and with confusion of sound have cruelty, and ravening, and darkness, loathly mire and all putrescense of thought or thing, foul mists and violent flame, cold without mercy, been born, and death without hope. Yet is this through him and not by him; and he shall see, and ye all likewise, and even shall those beings, who must now dwell among his evil and endure through Melko misery and sorrow, terror and wickedness, declare in the end that it redoundeth only to my great glory, and doth make the theme more worth the hearing, Life more worth the living, and the World so much the more wonderful and marvellous, that of all the deeds of Iluvatar it shall be called his mightiest and his loveliest."

P. 52, "The Book of Lost Tales 1", J. R. R. Tolkien

What a beautiful passage! My guess is that Tolkien agreed with Descartes when he suggested that the presence of evil in the world actually serves to make it better than it could have been without evil. This passage suggests that all these evil things are actually among Iluvatar's greatest creations, and that in the end, they only serve to glorify him and his creation. Wow!

Isn't that an interesting thing to consider when looking at all the evil in our own world? How much more will we be rejoicing in the end, when God's purposes are fully revealed to us, and all the pain has been left behind as if it were a bad dream?

rosymole
06-07-2005, 06:07 PM
It is a pretty amazing passage, one of those that really hammers you into the ground and then just lifts you straight back up again!
I don't know much (read anything!) about Descartes apart from the ever present "corgito ergo sum", but it sounds pretty interesting. It's certainly a great way to consider looking forward to see what the end of our days may have in store!

Turambar
06-08-2005, 12:03 AM
Descartes had some good refutations to agruments from evil. One of them suggested that God could allow evil in the world if it actually made his creation "more perfect" than it could be without evil.

An example of this could seen when you show love to someone even though you could have shown them hatred. Love would not mean much to anyone if it was the only option. You could even argue that real love would be impossible without the option to not love. One might go so far as to say that good things like love are only possible because God allows the possibility evil or imperfection. I think Tolkien would agree with this, saying that the allowance of evil was God's greatest deed.

Anyway, I think you get to ask the next question, rosymole!

It's a Christian website (more geared for homeschooling, I guess) that says our 2 loved authors' works are New Age stuff! It confused me, made me think, is there something wrong with my love for fantasy works? Does it make us less lovers of Christ? No - groups like that don't want to put the intellectual work into discerning the false imagination from the true one. Lots of times they're really driven by fear, which is not of God.

Who had the 3 Rings of Power that were made by the elves?Well, originally it was Elrond, Galadriel, and Cirdan, but when Gandalf landed, Cirdan gave his ring to the wizard, saying that he was going to need it more.

Here's one that I think is unfair to ask, because you have to really dig into the alternative tales to find it, but I'll ask anyway because it'll lead to a cool story.

Hey, you're fast!
Five: Saruman, Gandalf and Radagast. Two were not heard from again...

The other two were the Ithryn Luin (Blue Wizards), called in the Quenya Alatar and Pallando (although Tolkien later wrote letters on two Maiar called Rómestámo and Morinehtar, who may have been a later concept of the Two). Although Tolkien fears they failed their mission, like Saruman, but doubtless in different ways, I personally like to believe they were responsible for lessening the grip of the Enemy over the Far East and Far South of Middle-earth.

They traveled with Saruman into the East, but Saruman returned alone. How wonderful it would be to learn and read of the adventures of the Ithryn Luin! *sighs hopelessly*

To answer yoou LOTR question, I admit I dont really know the answer but I searched on Google - sorry for cheating!- and the answer is... strands of her hair!
Please tell the cool story, too.

My question:Who was the creator of the dwarves?

PrinceOfTheWest
01-19-2006, 05:44 PM
I can't remember who the creator of the dwarves was without looking it up, but I'll take a stab: Aüle?

The story is pretty much what you identified. Galadriel dwelt in the Blessed Realm while Fëanor did. Her golden hair was wonderous, and some said the golden light of Laurelin was captured therin. Fëanor was enamored of her, but she spurned him because of his proud and masterful nature. He asked of her for a lock of her hair to enshrine in some masterful work of his hands (this was before he had wrought the Silmarils), but she disdained him. Many times he asked, but she refused his request.

So it was when she pressed Gimli the Dwarf, that he should ask for a gift from her, when he named a strand of her hair, he knew not what he was naming: the very thing that had been refused the greatest elf of legend. Yet in his humility he did not ask, but in respect named at Galadriel's insistence. So, out of courtesy and respect for his humble attitude, beside the Anduin in Middle Earth, Galadriel the Elven Queen bestowed on Gimli Gloin's son, Dwarf of the Mountain, what had been denied to Fëanor son of Finwë in the Blessed Realm.

I forgot where I learned this. I thought it was in the book Morgoth's Ring, but now I can't find it, so it must be in one of the other unfinished tales.

Galadriel was under the Ban of Mandos and denied return to the Blessed Realm - yet she returned regardless. What did she do to lift the ban and allow her to return?

She was allowed to return after assisting the free peoples in defeating Sauron. Also, she was a Ringbearer along with Elrond and Gandalf. That's why Bilbo, Frodo and eventually Sam were gained admittance to Valinor.

PrinceOfTheWest
01-23-2006, 11:32 AM
Thanks, Danny - I knew Daeron was in there somewhere, as was Celebrimbor, but I got confused as to who did what.

I'm not one who really enjoyed the Silmarillion, but it was worth reading it for no other reason than the story of Galadriel's exile. I transforms her rejection of the ring into a heartbreakingly beautiful ending to a lovely tale.

It was rowan trees.

That's a trick question. It should have been Tar-Miriel, but her cousin(?) forced a marriage and took the throne, at which point he assumed the name Ar-Pharazon.

What was Tar-Miriel doing when the wave overwhelmed Numenor?

This one makes me very sad indeed, but she was ascending the Meneltarma, assaying (I believe) to call upon Eru the One, but had done so too late.

I understand Tolkien had other possible stories that differed with his view that Tar-Míriel (named Ar-Zimraphel by her usurper husband) had been forced into the marriage with Ar-Pharazôn, but that she actually eloped with him much against the laws of the Númenor - though I like the other version best. :D

King Earnil I captured Umbar from the men of Harad, but he didn't defeat them. So I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess Aragorn. Correct? Incorrect?

LifeMaiden

It was actually Hyarmendakil the First who defeated Harad but I got this from volume 12 of the series the History of Middle Earth....

Earnil I was listed as the ruler who began to rebuild the neglected Gondorian navy...said to have been lost at sea in a storm.

Okay....name the five peninsulas of Numenor :D
