I am. I'm a big fan of Hitchcock's classic, his movie Rear Window is one of my favorite movies. I also love movies made during WWII. I used to watch The Longest Day every other weekend when I was little. And I like Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, The Sound of Music and South Pacific are my favorite.
Then Gone with the Win, so wonderful, so classic...

Yes, I am so glad that someone brought back this thread. :p I just discovered classic movies a little over a year ago, and I'm hooked. I think movies from the 30's-50's are so much better (in general) than movies nowadays. But it seems like many people don't understand that. :o

I love old movies, especially musicals. My favorite nonmusicals are Sabrina and Casablanca. I love musicals with Gene Kelly in them. I've never been into dancing or anything, LOL, but he is just irresistible! He's so talented and he always brings this fun, great personality to the screen. Singin' in the Rain is my favorite, and I also love Anchors Aweigh. Some more of my other favorites are The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, and Mary Poppins.

I haven't seen nearly as many classic movies as I'd like. My local library has a ton of them, and hopefully I can check some of them out soon, but I haven't been lately. And I'm getting a few for Christmas, including Brigadoon and An American in Paris. So I'm really looking foward to that. :p

We pick up a local station that occasionally plays old movies. The night before last they were playing The Seven Year Itch (I think?), starring Marilyn Monroe. I only watched about half of it, because I couldn't get into it (I've never been much of a Marilyn Monroe fan, anyway). Another old movie I couldn't get into was Oklahoma. I rented it, but compared to the other musicals I've seen, I was really disappointed.

I love classics; depending on what they're based on and whose in them...Last week Hallmark Channel was showing several old DISNEY classics, including, "Pollyanna", "The Parent Trap", and "Swiss Family Robinson."

I like the Jerry Lewis\Dean Martin films, or just the ones with Jerry Lewis in them. A good one to see *not Jerry Lewis related* is "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." it's hilarious! I love it. I also like old westerns, especially with John Wayne; McLintock!, The Searchers, and The Sons of Katie Elder are my favs. I prefer the old films to most new ones because they are actual family films whereas the new films are not-so-much. I think that's why I like them: I can watch them without worrying about how bad the language or violence is, or how much sexual content is included.

No, I haven't seen that one. What year was it made? I really want to see "It's a Wonderful Life," hopefully when it comes on TV sometime in December. I watched part of it when it came on TV a few years ago, but I wasn't really paying attention. And that was before I got interested in old movies.

I can't get into Westerns. I don't know why, I guess I'm just not interested in those kinds of movies.

Meet John Doe was made 1940,I think. It has Gary Cooper, and Barbara Stanwyke in it.Or,if you want it funnier, since that ones serious, there's the comedy version with an almost identical plot.Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.It was meant to be more of Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and stars Jean Arthur, and Gary Cooper.

The best role Cary Grant ever played, imo was "People Will Talk" (1950,co-starring Jeanne Craine). Its a drama role, with some funny moments, about a doctor whose "unconventional" methods help his patients, but annoy the other doctors.Very sweet movie...with a prolife message.:)

I recommend..
To Kill A Mockingbird(1960s film about a Southern lawyer who defends a black man accused of a crime he doesn't commit..its about prejudice.)

Spellbound (1940s Alfred Hitchcock mystery, about a man with amnesia whos accused of murder. Its a little odd,but an interesting movie, imo)

The Keys of the Kingdom(1940s.he plays a priest who goes to China to be a missionary. Its a little like The Inn of the Sixth Happiness)

To Kill A Mockingbird is defiantely the best, imo. He won an oscar for it.:)

Edit:Thought of some more..
The Valley of Decision(It co-stars my favorite actress Greer Garson.1940s.Its about a couple(one wealthy the other poor),who have to choose between their families,or their own happiness.I'm not sure its out on tape though,I found it back when I had TCM.)

And,its when hes much older but....
The Blue And The Grey(1980s,Miniseries about the Civil War.He plays Abraham Lincoln. Its an amazing film, except for some language. If you have a filter, its perfect!)

The Scarlet And the Black (1980s,true story of a priest who hid people in the Vatican during World War II.Again, has some language, but a neat film if you have a filter).

The Scarlet And the Black (1980s,true story of a priest who hid people in the Vatican during World War II.Again, has some language, but a neat film if you have a filter).

Hows that?:p

Gregory Peck in a Hitchcock film? Oh! Awesome! I've got to see it. :D
And yeah, I agree To Kill a Mockingbird is definitely his best. :D
May I make a suggestion?
The Guns of Navarrone (sp?) is another good Gregory Peck film :D

I loved To Kill A Mocking Bird. Whether thats classic or not is another thing but it was an awesome movie with true values. Oh and Breakfast at Tiffanys was amazing! And another movie with Audrey Hepburn whcih I can't remember th name of. I also just recently watched a movie with Marlyn Manroe in it. It was about 3 women who were looking for rich husbands but at the end ended up marrying normal guys who they fell in love with. Once again I can't remember the name, gah! I never knew I could actually enjoy movies that were made before I was born.

I was getting a little anxious at the end when it was almost over and I didn't think it was going to have a happily ever after (I love happy endings), so I was really happy when it did. :p I'm very excited about "An American in Paris," and I plan on watching it tomorrow night.

"An American in Paris" was awesome. It's very sweet, with lots of amazing dancing and some humor. I definitely recommend it. I adore Gene Kelly...I'm trying to collect most of his movies. So far, I only have "Singin' in the Rain", "An American in Paris", "Brigadoon", and "Anchors Aweigh." I love them all, but of course "Singin' in the Rain" is my favorite, now followed by "An American in Paris."

I'm trying to find a website where I can find old movies for cheap prices, LOL. All of mine so far I've ordered from Amazon, but most of their old movies are still expensive! All of the other Gene Kelly ones I want are $16-$22 on there, and I would love to be able to find them for about $12 or less.

^I'll let you know about "Breakfast at Tiffany's". I'm planning on watching it tomorrow night.

Today I watched "Fiddler on the Roof." Now I know why people always talk about how good it is, because it was very good. :D I love the "If I Were a Rich Man" song, and when I heard "Sunrise, Sunset", I knew I recognized it from somewhere. I remembered that Jesse and Joey sing it to Stephanie Tanner on her first day of school on one of the first few episodes of "Full House". :p

I love the barn raising song and dance from "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", too. I like how the brothers are all dressed in colorful clothes, but the town boys are dressed in brown and dull colors. I also love the one where the brothers are cutting wood and singing, I think it's called "Lonesome Polecat", or something. It made me laugh to see a guy practically dancing with an axe (:p), but I really like that scene. Did anyone else think of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" during this movie like I did? Especially when she first moves in and has to clean up their mess and teach them manners. :D It was like a flashback from the Disney movie for me.

I liked "Breakfast at Tiffany's". :D It was really funny, even though it was a little unusual. Holly, the character played by Audrey Hepburn, was hilarious, and she almost reminded me a little of Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter, because she seems to be out there and a bit of an airhead, but she's really not. It had a few unappropriate things in it, but overall a great movie.

I saw Jodie Foster's "Anna and the King," with Chow Yun-Fat as the King of Thailand/Siam. The makers of that movie put themselves in a real dilemma. Political correctness absolutely demands that women must be morally better than men at all times...but it ALSO absolutely demands that Buddhists must be morally better than Christians at all times...and here they had a Christian woman meeting a Buddhist man!

In the end, no doubt after much soul-searching by the writers, they decided that Christian-bashing was even more vital than male-bashing; accordingly, they made the King right and Anna wrong in the matter of the concubine who wanted to leave the King. But that was okay, because Anna could be "forgiven" for the crime of being a Christian, by simply discarding her Christian faith! You may be certain that this is exactly what was intended when they showed Anna dropping her Bible to the ground.

Heres a few I was thinking of...
Musicals:
"Showboat"-1950s version..forget the actors...

Drama:
"Enchantment"-1940s,this is my favorite love story..a little sad,but just amazing...

"Rebel Without A Cause"-James Dean(sad ,but great film about teens of the 1950s)

"The Miracle Worker"(the true story of Helen Keller)-1960s version with Patty Duke-its amazing!!!!!

"Random Harvest"-Greer Garson, its a love story and a neat one!

"Little Women"-June Allyson,1940s version

"The Best Years of Our Lives"-Dana Andrews,1940s movie about soldiers returning home from WWII.

Comedy:
"Father of the Bride"-1940s with Elizabeth Taylor-its cute, funny, and clean....

War:
"Stalag 17"-William Holden,1950s..its a comedy-drama about soldiers in a prision camp in WWII(not nearly as dark as it sounds).

Hows that?;-D

I can't really get into war or western movies. :o I've never really tried to watch one all the way through, though, so maybe that's why. :p Maybe if I get one with one of my favorite actors in it, then I would like it. Didn't James Stewart make some westerns?

Yep..Bend Of the River,The Naked Spur,Broken Arrow,the Man From Laramie,and some others...:pI have quite a few of his westerns.:D
my favorite westerns are High Noon with Gary Cooper, and 3:10 To Yuma(the 1950s version with Glenn Ford..the modern one is terrible).

I watch a lot of western TV shows, too.*grin*

Some war movies are good that have no war scenes, like The Best Years of Our Lives. It all takes place after the war, with not a single scene of war.

Try The Man Who Knew Too Much with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day, it's Hitchcock but it's very good. :D Another good one is Suspicion with Joan Fontaine and Cary Grant, it's another great mystery story, also Hitchcock but still excellent. :D Another good Hitchcock is Shadow of a Doubt with Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten. Both Suspicion and Shadow of a Doubt there's no killings, a murderer is suspected but not known. ;) That's what makes them good imo. :-p Hope that helps. :D

I'm probably going to the library tomorrow, so maybe I'll finally get to check out some of those movies that were recommended...

On PBS last Saturday night, they were playing an old movie (like they usually do). I can't remember the name of it, but I think it was "Mrs. (something, LOL, I can't remember the last name) and the Ghost", or something like that. I think Natalie Wood was in it...I was going to tape it, but I completely forgot about it until about 10:00 that night. Anyway, has anyone seen it? I need to check the schedule and see what comes on this Saturday.

That sounds like it. Yeah, I'm not really into ghost stuff either, but I was just going to watch it because it was an old movie, LOL.

I think we probably do have the same PBS. Usually they play classic movies on Saturday night at 8:00 (EST). Sometimes I've turned it on to watch one, and it wasn't on, but that's when they're supposed to show them. Last week at the end of the movie, they were telling what was coming on this week, and if I remember right, it was "A Letter to Three Wives." But when I just looked on tvguide.com, it wasn't listed. It seems like their schedule gets messed up sometimes. :o

The movie of "Ivanhoe" showed a quirk of marketing. In the original novel by Sir Walter Scott, Robin Hood plays an important role in the action; but the moviemakers were worried about Robin Hood having a greater name recognition than the story's title character. They didn't want viewers to come expecting a Robin Hood movie and then wonder why that guy on the horse was getting so much attention. So, although Robin Hood remained important in the movie, they didn't CALL him Robin Hood; they called him Locksley, which still identified him clearly enough.

One thing I disliked about the movie was that they killed off one good guy who did NOT die in the book.

Suspicion-Interesting movie.I like Cary Grant better in comedy, though.

If it helps, here are some movies I liked by him:

"The Howards of Virginia"-a Revolutionary War drama about a family. Its very good.

"The Talk of the Town"-my favorite Cary Grant!Its a comedy-drama,and incredibly funny!:D

"My Favorite Wife"-fun comedy

"Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House"-cute funny movie.

"Penny Serenade"-very sad,but sweet in places drama. It is a tearjerker, though, esp the one part near the end...:(

"Destination Tokyo"-great war drama..nobody gets killed, and not very violent at all,so its not a sad movie.

"The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer"-pretty funny comedy.

"People Will Talk"-cute drama.

I feel bad about complaining about my library, because today we went, and I actually found some really good stuff. :p But I do need to ask about those inter-library loans. We have about 5 libraries in our county, so they should have some different options. Plus, my aunt works there, so that should help me a little, too. :)

You can get up to 5 DVD's on a card, so I got: "The Maltese Falcon" (I like Bogart and have always heard about this one), "To Have and Have Not" (I wanted to see Bogart and Bacall together), "Rebel Without A Cause" (I remember ya'll talking about it here), "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer", and "My Fair Lady" (I like Audrey Hepburn). So I'm really excited about watching them all. :D This evening I watched "The Maltese Falcon," and it was pretty good, even if I had a little trouble following it sometimes. I've never seen Humphrey Bogart smile so much in a movie, so that was interesting. :p

Edit: Oh, and I had a question I forgot to ask. I think ya'll said that "Rebel Without a Cause" was really good. But I was just looking through the DVD's and noticed that it was rated PG-13 for "some violence and thematic elements". I generally stay away from PG-13 movies, and I didn't even think to look at the rating while I was at the library, because I assumed it would be PG or not rated. So is it okay, or is there any bad content?

I love the film. Its one of my very favorite films, and classic 1950s.Its excellent and James Dean is superb in the roll.I usually stay away from PG-13 films,too,so...

I have the theatre version..the version you have may have some added scenes if its a special edition, but heres the breakdown of the film I own.
There is a litle bit of violence -it conisists of a knife fight (not one gets killed),a drag race (one person's car goes off the cliff and he gets killed),a fight, and the death of one main character (gets shot) at the very end.The violence isn't graphic.

There is no bad words of any kind.

The only "scenes" is a kiss between 2 of the main characters, and the one girl kissing another boy(Nothing other than a kiss).

Does that help?:)

NotATameLion
02-18-2008, 10:58 PM
^Yes, that helps a lot, thanks. :) I haven't gotten around to watching "Rebel Without a Cause" yet, but I'm planning on watching it tomorrow evening. A little violence doesn't bother me, but I can't stand language or anything else unappropriate, so it should be okay. The only version the library had was the 2 disc special edition, though, so I hope it doesn't have any added scenes.

I watched "To Have and Have Not" last night, and it was actually pretty good. I didn't expect much, but it was good. It was really interesting to see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall together. I do get tired of the endless smoking/drinking theme throughout Bogart's movies, and I don't approve of what I've read about his personal life, but he is a very good actor.

This evening I watched "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer." Thank you so much for recommending it! I never would have known about it if you hadn't mentioned it here. I loved it. :D It was one of the best old movies I've ever seen. It was so cute and funny. I liked the plot and seeing Shirley Temple in a movie when she was older, and I was laughing through the whole movie, especially the scene when they're getting ready to go to the picnic, and he starts using teen "lingo". :p And the dinner scene with all of the birthdays...If Cary Grant is this great in all of his other movies (other than the 2 with Katherine Hepburn that I've already seen), then I definitely want to see them. :)

Tonight I watched both "Rebel Without a Cause" and "My Fair Lady", because they have to go back to the library tomorrow. They were both pretty good, but not exactly what I expected.

"My Fair Lady" wasn't as good as I expected. The first half was very good, but the second half not so much. I just wasn't satisfied with the ending. I don't know, I can't explain what I didn't like about it. And I was surprised with the language in it (although snowflower warned me), quite a few words, because my disc said it was rated G.

"Rebel Without a Cause" was very good. It wasn't anything like I thought it would be, but it was good. I kept thinking, there can't be a perfect ending, something has to go wrong. Then I thought, well, maybe it will end well. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who wasn't seen it, so I won't say what happens. But I liked the movie very much. :) I want to see James Dean's other movies, too. It's just very sad to watch him and know about his life and how he died so young. :(

Yeah..sorry about "My Fair Lady".I don't like that movie, myself, mostly because of the language.:-(

Yeah, Audrey, I like Casablanca a lot, too. It's really the first classic movie I ever saw. :D I've only seen Ingrid Bergman in a few movies, but I like her.

I really want to see "The Talk of the Town", but I kind of doubt it will tape. :(

I watched "Red River" all the way through, and it was just okay. John Wayne's character was kind of mean, LOL. I just guess westerns aren't my thing, anyway. :p Oh, yeah, I figured you didn't mean the new "3:10 to Yuma", because I remember seeing previews and seeing that it was rated R.

Whenever I can, I watch AMC (cable is quite possibly the greatest thing that ever happened to me)

So far, a few of my favorite classics are:
A River Runs Through It
Planet of the Apes
Lolita

And others that I can't think of the name too. But I love the old movies with the hero. I wish there were more actors like John Wayne.

Saravis:Yay!A Claudette Colbert fan!I love her films!:D

Jack:I used to watch AMC ALL the time when I had cable.:p

Kristin:I didn't care for Red River, either.I didn't liek John Wayne at all untill I saw the High and the Mighty.
Have you seen any western TV shows, ever?(*points to avvy*I love Gunsmoke):p
Have you seen Ingrid Bergman in "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness"?Thats my favorite with her."Gaslight" is good, too.

Snowflower: I love Gunsmoke!! My uncle taped a bunch of episodes once and since we kids didn't have a TV for several years we would watch them at my grandparents. Ah, those were the good old days...:D

My oldest brother went through a John Wayne phase a few years back and I swore off John Wayne...although McClintock is a good movie. And The Quiet Man. But he was watching the really dumb 'dime a dozen' spaghetti Westerns...I nearly went insane during that period...I have a sneaking suspicion he did it because I was obsessing over Lord of the Rings...

No, I've never seen any western TV shows, either, not even Gunsmoke. My dad always talks about how he used to love that show (he was really into Western stuff). I knew about John Wayne but had never seen him anything until I saw him in the "I Love Lucy" and "The Lucy Show" episodes. He's really funny in both of those, especially the original Lucy one. :p

No, I haven't seen her in either of those movies. I've seen her in "Casablanca," "Spellbound," and it seems like another...but I can't remember it right now.

Good news! My aunt and uncle are taping "The Talk of the Town" for me tonight. :D

Orieus:Yay!!!!I've never met anyone else who likes Gunsmoke! Its my favorite "old" TV show!:D

Kristin:I hope you get to see "The Talk of the Town",and like it.Its a fun movie.:)

The other Ingrid Bergmans I named are really good."The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" is a true story about a missionary to China.
"Gaslight" is a kinda spooky mystery about a woman who thinks shes losing her mind...and about a search for some hidden jewels. Its a good mystery because its not a murder one..I dont' usually care for murder mysteries.

I love John Wayne in that Lucy!I like seeing old actors I know from movies in there..Theres a funny one with William Holden,if you've ever seen that one..something about Hollywood..I forget the name.Anyway,Lucy keeps stareing at him..and its really funny.:p

I grew up on westerns,so they're my very favorite kind of TV show, and movie....John Wayne ones are popular, but I don't really care for them.(his dramas are MUCH better..)
If you want to try any good westerns, that aren't the real violent, cruel kind...I'd start with TV shows...thats what made me a fan.
Gunsmoke is the best (esp. the color episodes starting with season 13).Its got great plots, and lovable characters.

Bonanza is good, but can be rougher than Gunsmoke..Also,sometimes it ahs a lot of romances..*rolleyes*

Rawhide is really good,if you don't mind Clint Eastwood..hes young and a nice character,so you don't even notice its him.

As for movies, the best are "High Noon",and "3:10 to Yuma" as I said before...and "Shane" with Alan Ladd is very good.*smile*

Also, modern western TV shows are great: "The Ponderosa" is often very sweet, and has barely any violence (a couple episodes have 1 bad word, but otherwise, its very clean, esp or a modern show).

I love westerns because of their characters and the idea of one person going against evil and winning. They're so neat....
Sorry about my ramblings,lol...

^I need to check out some of those.

I looked up both of those Ingrid Bergmen movies, and my library has neither one. :(

Oh, yes, the William Holden episode is one of my favorites! "I Love Lucy" is my favorite show, and I have all the seasons on DVD. :o The Hollywood episodes are my favorites. Actually, seeing all the old movie stars on there was what first made me curious to start watching classic movies. :D I love the William Holden one, the John Wayne one, the Harpo Marx one, and so many others...I love the Europe episodes, too, but the Hollywoods are the best- absolute classics. I really need to watch them all again.

By the way, Audrey, I really like your siggy! :)

The I Love Lucy episode with Bill Holden was hilarious!!!! Bill Holden is a great actor and seeing him in there was awesome! :D

High Noon is good although I don't really like westerns much, especially John Wayne. :p Although, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" was really good, Jimmy Stewart was fantastic in the movie, as always.

I didn't know Alan Ladd was in "Shane"! I've gotta see it...

@NotATameLion: I thought the first season Lucy episodes are the best.... :P
They're the most funny. lol

Have any of you guys seen "A Streetcar Named Desire"? Is it a good movie?
All I know about it, is that it stars Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh.

Thank you!I was playing around with pictures, and thats what happened.:p I like your banner,too...very pretty.*smile*

Josh:Yep,Alan Ladd is great in "Shane".I love his radio show "Box 13",too,and actually got to see an episode of it the other day as a TV show.:)

Have you seen the Lucy episode "Fred and Ethel fight"?My family was on the floor during the scene when she throws her hair dye out the window!
And "The Handcuffs" is another one of my favorites, too.

I haven't seen that movie, but I like Marlon Brando films.Have you seen "On The Waterfront",or "The Men" with him?

Oh, I'm sorry, I was wrong. I just looked down on my desk and saw where I had written down the number for "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness", so the library does have it. :o

The first season of Lucy is very funny...I especially love the one "Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her". :p She uses pots and pans for bullet protection and moves in zig-zags...Hilarious! :D My other favorites from the first season are "The Fur Coat," "Lucy Fakes Illness," and "Lucy Writes a Play." I love the typing errors in her play script...like when Ethel says "liver" instead of "lover." Wow, I love that show. We used to have an "I Love Lucy" thread, I think. I need to revive it. :)

I love classic movies! Especially all the musicals such as Sound of Music, Singin' in the Rain, Wizard of Oz, An American in Paris, My Fair Lady, West Side Story etc. I also love movies like Gone with the Wind and Casablanca. Hitchcock's films are awesome as well.

I just love movies in general. If it's a good film I'll like it no matter the decade or era!

Yep,I love that "liver" part.:p

Audrey, that's good that you're getting to see all the season sets now. :) There isn't a bad episode in the whole run of the show. :p I love "The Andy Griffith Show", but I've never seen "Father Knows Best".

I saw "The Talk of the Town", and I loved it! :D Cary Grant seems to be better and better in every movie I see of his. Every time I see one of his movies, I want to see more, LOL. I'm hopefully going to the library at the end of the week, and I've got a list of about 5 of his movies that I'm going to check out. :)

Cary Grant is da BOMB!! He has so many great movies, I reccomend 'Father Goose" with Leslie Caron and there's this really sad one with Irene Dunne...oh snap cant remember what its called!!! Its very good, I promise. Its strange that he never won an Oscar or anything, isnt it? Poor Cary. :(

He is very good. :D He's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors in classic movies. At first I didn't like him too much, because I had only seen him in "Bringing Up Baby" and "The Philadelphia Story", and I don't like those movies. But the more I saw him, the more I liked him. Maybe I'll give those other two a second chance. But I'm not a big Katherine Hepburn fan.

I'd like to know everyone's favorite actors and actresses in old movies. :)
Saravis_09, I guess Lauren Bacall tops your actress list. :p

Kristin:Father Knows Best is cute..I wish they'd put it out on DVD.Its a family with 3 kids.

Oooh...I'm so glad you liked "The Talk of the Town"!My favorite!

The only Katherine Hepburn movies I've ever thought were okay are "The African Queen"(with Humphrey Bogart),and "Little Women"(1930s version). But I like the 40s version MUCH better...

Jimmy Stewart, Bogie, Jimmy Cagney, Alan Ladd, George Peppard, Fred MacMurray, Robert Mitchum, Bobby Hope, Henry Fonda.....I think I have too much time on my hands....:o

Has anyone heard of Veronica Lake? She was only famous during the early 1940's; she has the famous 'peek-a-boo' hair. She has a tragic story. I think she should be more recognized.
