I kept hearing about Stargate Atlantis all over the place, but seeing as in New Zealand we are only about halfway through season 6 or 7 of the normal Stargate I knew I wasn't going to be seeing Atlantis anytime soon. So I got my hands on the first few episodes of Atlantis by, lets just say not very legal mean, and watched them last night. I have to admit that I like these. They are great. As much as I like the Origional Stargate, Atlantis is a nice change of scenery. And the Wraiths make the Goa'uld look like pansies :P
Oh and I like the design of the new Stargates.
What are your thoughts on the new show?

I love it. It's definitely a good change of pace from SG-1, although no one can really top the wise-cracks of Jack O'Neill. The Wraith are a very cool new villian and I am anxious to see the rest of season 1 of Atlantis.
Monkeh

Definately. This new guy is good. But not quite Jack O'Neill. I always thought Richard Dean Anderson was perfect for that part lol. I'll be watching Ep 4 tonight, and Hopefully get Ep 5 by the time I finish work tomorrow. I can only find 10 episodes, is that all there is at the moment?
Specter

Yep, it ends to be continued, and the first season will only have 20 episodes I think.
Monkeh

Ah. That explains it. I'll just have to keep an eye out for them then.

minor spoilers. I guess. Is this thread assumed to have spoilers?
I can't wait until this series gets more established. It's had a great start! I've liked almost all of the season 1 episodes, but I'd like to see how Joe Flanigan's character of Sheppard is developed. As the first season, it seems like he's not really into his own character yet. Seems like he's trying to continue on the lines of O'Neill's character. It took a while for Michael Shanks and RDA to get their own personality after taking over characters from other actors, so I imagine it'll be a *little* while before all the Atlantis characters are their full potential.
I was really impressed with the work of Flanigan (Sheppard) in the summer finale when the Genii come to the base. Very well acted. He does a lot better on the serious emotional stuff than he does with comedy. ...Except his work with the wraith "Steve." That was classic.
I love all the characters in Atlantis, Beckett, McKay, and Zelenka (sp?) especially. And I really liked "Steve." I wish they didn't get rid of him so early on. He tried so hard to be an evil guy. Oh well. So long, Steve.
Go to Gateworld (http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/s1/index.shtml) for all news about Alantis (and SG-1)!

I also thought that Sheppard seemed to be a bit like O'Neill. As with SG-1, getting used to each character, and figuring them all out really took a couple of seasons. Having watched ALL of SG-1 and Atlantis within the last few months, I really got into it, and season to season was able to see the characters grow into their roles and really watch them change a lot. I have a lot of respect for the mythology that they've built around the stories.
What I want to know is when the start of the second half of the season is.
Monkeh

So am I. I'll have all 10 episodes of Atlantis by Wednesday next week at the latest.
At the moment I'm saving and Buying the SG1 Boxed sets when I have money. Only problem is we are only up to Season 4 in the Boxed sets here. Though they are releasing one every 2 months. So shouldn't be too long till I get them.

Well, through no big surprise, Atlantis's second season is confirmed. What I am posting here is a more incredible matter:
SG-1 SEASON 9 HAS BEEN CONFIRMED!!! WOOHOOO!
I must say I actually cheered aloud when I read the announcement the other day. This means that SG-1 ties as the longest running sci-fi series in television history (X-Files also had nine seasons). I'm glad that something as worthy as Stargate can do what X-Files can do.
Nine years. Man, I'm excited.
Stargate rules.

To be totally honest, I had no doubt in my mind that it would make it to at least season 9. I hope they can do a 10th season, and perhaps that'll be a great place to end SG-1, although the end will be sad. Even though I watched 7 and 1/2 seasons all since July, it feels like those characters became a part of my life.
Dead Rain

SG-1 should never end. but if it does it will be sad. kuz they'll have to kill at least one person off in order to end it.

Atlantis Season 2 ***Spoilers***
Atlantis Season 2 will feature crossovers with SG-1. It's going to find the power needed to travel back and forth between Pegasus and Earth. :)

Now thats just awesome. Can't wait. Even though I'm only up to Ep 8 of Atlantis lol. Oh and I don't think there is any hope of seeing Atlantis over here on TV anytime soon. I managed to get a look at the up coming programme list for 2005 for the channel that usually get all the Stargate stuff. No sign of it there. Might have to buy the DVD's off amazon.

Why would they have to kill of anyone to end it? They got rid of Jonas as a regular by putting him on another planet. They got rid of Hammond as a regular by promoting him. They could easily end the series by just resolving a number of the plot arcs and saying THE END or something cheesy. I dunno. I'm just rambling.

aye. but there would have to be some reason for the rest of them to leave. that or they die. or they just cancel the series all together.

That's true. I wonder how it will end. Or if they'll decide to end it with a movie of some sort.

Monkeh

I think they will end it with a 2 Hr special. It would seem the best way to do it.
I'm up to Ep 10 of Atlantis. I should have that in the next day or so. So far I am really enjoying the series. Oh and I agree about 'Steve'. that made me laugh.
"You know. We have been doing this for weeks and I still don't know your name. You seem like a steve to me"
"I am your Death"
"No, I like Steve Better"
hehehe.

To end such a series would be my undoing. I mean..I did say that when x-files ended..and yeah..I ended up alive and well..but still...I was with sg-1 since the begining! I was also with Atlantis..but considering it just started that's not impressive. LOL I love Sheppard's character...they do try and make him out to be a lot like O'Neil so I'm glad they sent to another galaxy...cuz next to O'Neil he does try his best to outwit him but MaGyver always has the upper hand. I feel like they just cloned Sg-1 when making Atlantis but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying it. The Wraith are an amazing race to fight...much more entertaining to watch then the g'ould and their glowy eyes. Now we get fish faces and an aquatic theme that is very cool. I also love Atlantis..what better setting is an ancient city filled with tons of mysteries and powers? They could do anything in a setting like that.
In order for them to end Sg-1 they need to tie in Atlantis..b/c those two have to exist together. I dunno...i think i babbled too much so I will stop talking now.

Specter
12-02-2004, 01:12 PM
Basically, we found this ring that creates a wormhole to travel to other planets, all around the galaxy, but in a matter of seconds. It is called the "StarGate" program, and it's purpose is to get allies and technology from other planets more advanced than we are.

My sister still doesn't like SG-1 "because they got different actors for the roles." Even eight years and over 150 episodes of Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks as O'Neill and Jackson can't justify the replacement of Kurt Russell and James Spader's 2-hour long roles as O'Neill and Jackson.
I got used to the replacement quickly (saw the original movie in the theater and liked it, but now I like SG-1 better), but she still prefers the original movie. So, if she likes it, I guess watching it wouldn't be a complete waste of time.
There may be hope she'll like Atlantis. (How can you not love Rodney McKay?)
Dead Rain

I never liked Kurt Russell as O'Niel. It doesn't suit him. O'Niell is to wise cracking, thats why Richard Dean Anderson suits him. He can do that I have no idea what you just said, But I'll act like I do anyway look so well. Kurt Russell could never do that.

Oh. My. Goodness. Have you guys seen the plot information and photo galleries for the Atlantis and SG-1 season finale?! Go to Gateworld.net now if you haven't.
(spoilers)
The sg-1 finale sounds awesomely crazy! They go back in time to where Ra, Apophis, etc. are still alive and well and they do something to alter history, and so the alternate future versions of the team get together and go back in time to fix things. I really simplified what was on their webpage. Sounds like it's much more involved than that.
And in Atlantis, looks like there is going to a big battle with the Wraith using big honkin' space guns and that sort of thing.
Looks like it'll be a great end of seasons!
Can't wait for SG1 Season9 and Atlantis Season2!

12-05-2004, 06:07 PM
Oh snap! That sounds amazing! When will the finales air?
Kurt Russell was alright but Richard Dean Anderson is the far better choice for O'Neil. Monkeh was right when he mentioned that the actor needed to be able to have a dry humor. Kurt Russell is not that effective with comedy. I do however like James Spader because he's so weird and a great actor but Micheal Shanks is someone I could really love. He's looks sorta like Spader and he does a great job.

Not really sure exactly when the finales run, but the last half of the season begins January 16, and they show one new episode a week, so the finales would be about 10 weeks after January 16.
New Atlantis news update: Paul McGillin a.k.a. Dr. Carson Beckett has been promoted from recurring character (in Atlantis) to regular. What does this mean? Well, it means we'll be seeing a whole lot more of him, probably with a larger role in each "season2" episode as well as a part in the next season's opening titles.
Sounds cool. Atlantis and Sg-1 are just getting better and better in my opinion.

well, I just saw five more episodes of Atlantis (The Eye, Hot Zone, The Defiant One, Sanctuary and Before I Sleep) which will air next month. Pretty sweet. "The Eye" and "The Defiant One" are especially good, as are any that includes Dr. Zelynka and McKay together.
Oh, and SG-1's next episode Gemini is really good. "Repli-Carter" is back and looks like we'll hear of her again! Thank goodness for www.suprnova.org or I'd have to wait and watch them well, when they air. lol.
Looking forward to the dvd box sets. and on to seasons 2 and 9.

Stargate is my all time favorite movie and when I learned of the tv show Stargate SG-1 I hated the idea. But from the first episode I was hooked. It has taken me a while to warm up to the idea of Stargate Atlantis but it's an alright show. Not as good as Stargate SG-1 though. :p
By the way, any of you going to GateCon in July?

GateCon is a Stargate convention that features many of the stargate actors and crew and is a gettogether for the fans. I'm not really sure what goes on there; I've never been to any conventions. To answer your question, Nymph, I won't be there.
New episodes air beginning next Friday!

sweet. I finally got "The Gift" (18); that was my last one to get. "Letters From Pegasus" (17) is pretty good as well. I was afraid it would be an overly-done clips episode, but it wasn't. My only complaint about "Atlantis" so far is Teyla. Granted, this is just the first season, and I may grow to like her more as the show goes on. Frankly my biggest problem with Stargate is the way all the people from other planets talk. It's always very annunciated ("I do not know" as opposed to "I dunno" or "beats me") and almost stiff. ...that being said, there is one character from SG-1 that gets that attitude right, and it works for his character. And I just can't get enough of him: Bra'tac. By far the best recurring character of SG-1. Now that the Jaffa are united and free, I think they should have a spinoff series - "Stargate Jaffa," starring Tony Amendola as Bra'tac.
Anyway, back to Atlantis. Those of you who saw it, what did you think of "The Siege"? Monkeh, read the next paragraph after you see it. I left out particulars, but there are some spoilers in the next paragraph.
---spoiler space for "The Siege" part 1---
I was kind of sad about the fate of one of the recurring characters (one that I really liked), but if he had to go, I thought he went out great. I'm glad the Stargate producers don't have the red-shirt syndrome that Star Trek had. They're not afraid to heighten the drama with casualties. ...and I must say, that finale was quite a finale. I loved the sweeping views of the city and stuff. And the battles. Very well done. Can't wait to see Part 3.
--- end spoiler space ---
One thing I think they should do to make Atlantis go from great to awesome is to have a villain. Now, I know there's the wraith, but they're all just faceless grunts, even "Steve" and "Bob." What they need is a mastermind, like the queen on the pilot episode. Some wraith (or maybe even non-wraith?) that assumes leadership and who can taunt the heroes from time to time.
Anyway, those are my thoughts for the day on Stargate.
Monkeh

Dragon

I want to see what they do with Shepard.
No kidding. Not to mention Ford and Teyla. To recap, it just showed Teyla's weapon (I guess it was hers) lying there next to the other bodies. So did she run away? (unlikely) ...or get beamed away? And I believe last time it showed Ford, he was confronted with about half a dozen wraith.
I must admit, I am very curious as to the direction they will take this next season, as well as the promised crossovers with sg-1.
Monkeh
03-14-2005, 12:52 AM
Yeah, and group of Wraith had just beamed in in front of Ford and his men, then more came out the door behind them. Teyla's weapon was on the ground but she was no where around. I don't think she was beamed though. Don't ask me why. I just don't think she was.
I really don't like this new comander. I liked Whatever that other guys name was. The one that got killed when they awoke the Wraiths. But this new one really annoys me.
It would be nice if they had an episode or two on sg-1 where they showed the new ZPM being found and the Deadalus being completed then launched towards the Pegasus Galaxy.

SPOILERS
first of all, with SG1, I really REALLY REALLY do not like Vala. And we have about 5 more sequential episodes to put up with that have her in it. Yeesh, I hope she dies off. I didn't like her the first time I saw her in Promethius Unbound, but she just gets worse.
Though I thought the first episode of season 9 SG1 was a bit random and strangely paced, I do think I will grow to like Mitchell and Landry in SG-1 though I still can't help thinking of Beau Bridges as "The Apollo 13 Wrecker" from Rocketman
In Atlantis, however, I really do see good things coming. I like Rainbow Sun Francks' acting as the new "Super-Ford." I thought he did great. Like you said, some of the story seemed a bit rushed, though. It seemed weird having the main climax of the last season end in having the (expected) Daedalus coming right at the beginning.
They seemed to have a lot of things they wanted to do in the episode, so some of it did seem disconnected. But overall, I really liked that episode in particular.
Monkeh
07-18-2005, 06:25 AM
So did I. I hope they don't over do the new Super Ford though. I really like the Daedalus aswell. But I wasn't surprised at how the Wraith managed to stop the Asguard Beaming Technology. I just thought it would take a few more ships, thats all.
Can't wait to see what story lines they use this season.

Speaking of Super Ford, did you catch last Friday's new Atlantis? wow. I must say, that was the best Atlantis episode so far. Ronan Dex is better than I expected, and Super Ford was very interesting as well. And of course, all those great McKay moments, with yet another favorite McKay line. (while hanging from a trap in a tree) "You wouldn't kill an unarmed upside-down man, would you?" Fabulous.
Monkeh
08-02-2005, 04:52 AM
Yes. it was great. Ronan is such a hard... Yeah. lol. I think he would have beaten Super Ford if Shepard hadn't interupted. I loved Mckay's SPF 100 Sunblock lol.

With Atlantis, I think Hermod, the Asgard, did something to the beamin tech so the Wraith could block it. He was pissed that the Daedalus was using it as a weapon.
