How about The Princess Bride. How do you feel about that movie and book. :)

I read the book in high school, and loved it - particularly the "good parts" comments by Goldman. It took me a couple readings to realize that the whole thing was a put-on, and there was no "complete" version written by S. Morgenstern, but it was fun nonetheless. I was gratified to see that the screenplay was also written by Goldman, so there were no worries about the script in any way violating the spirit of the book.

"You cannot tell it, because I wear a cape and mask. But I am smiling now."
"Why?"
"Because I'm not left handed either."

"Who are you?"
"No one of import. Another lover of the blade."
"I must know!"
"Get used to disappointment."

I've never read the book, but loved the film. Its probably Cary Elwes best performance on screen (though he was also entertaining in the Mel Brooks spoof, Robin Hood:Men In Tights), and the various gentle jibes at the fantasy genre are amusing. The comedy in general is superb, perhaps the most entertaining performance, aside from Elwes, given by Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya. I can't count the number of times I've heard someone at university quote the infamous "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." The same is true of numerous iconic lines in the film, the other most quoted probably being Wallace Shawn as Vizzini:

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia." But only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line."

Is the book as good? I have a friend who is obsessed with all things Princess Bride who rates it, but then obsessives aren't usually the best judge of that which they obsess over. ;)

The book is wonderful, but the movie retained much of the charm. I thought the Sicilian a little overdone, but that may just have been my taste. The book has the liberty to go into the background stories of Inigo and Fezzik, and the Count is much more developed. Lots of fun and highly recommended. Light reading, of course, but sometimes that's just the ticket. (Like Wodehouse!)

I love the book and have seen the movie.

I liked the book better but the movie scored points for making me laugh relatively hard :D

I love them!! But the "good parts" that were in there...totally bugged me...not them so much..I mean they were kinda cool...and unquie (sp?) but the part where he stops it when ButterCup is in the water and starts babling on irked me to the extreme and I almost strangeled the book!!

Both were great! I had read the book a couple years ago after seeing the movie. I was a little dissapointed in the ending though...liked the movie version ending much better, I must say. ;)

Ive read the book and grew up on the movie. I think Buttercup was a more of a dip in the book. I thought it was funny how S. Morgenstern didnt actually exsist and that Goldman wrote it himself in such a fashion. My favorite part??

"Mawage."

need i say more? Although, on my blog for a little while i had it set up where someone whould go to my blog and it would say...

"Where am i?"
"The pit of dispare, dont even thi-"
HA HA HERM
"Dont even think about trying to escape."

haha, good times, but how many of you read the first chapter of the sequal "Buttercup's baby"??

My sister loves the Princess Bride so much, we joked about her planning her wedding around it - it was an outdoor wedding, so we said she could ride up on a white horse and meet her husband who would be dressed as The Man In Black. It kind of fell apart because we couldn't imagine our minister saying "mawwiage".

She did have "storybook story" as her first dance though! (Can't remember the proper name but you know the song I mean!)

OH yes!! I read the first chapter....I had just finsished reading the book, and was about to start the 1st chapter of the sequal and the book said "Chapter One, Buttercup's Baby, Fezzik dies" and just couldn't handle that so I put the book down, and paced around the room until I drove my mother nuts....then she sent me to bed....but yeah...curious is Buttercup's baby an acctual book???

The Princess Bride is one of my altime favorite movies, and I have read the book as well. My copy of the book had the "First Chapter" of a sequel called "Buttercup's Baby." I did read it, and found it to be very intriguing. I wouldn't mind if he actually finished that story as well. It's very very good.

The Princess Bride is probably my all time favorite movie. It has everything in it! "Fencing, Fighting, Torture, Revenge, Giants, Monsters, Chases, Escapes, True Love, Miracles"....what more could a girl ask for? I grew up watching this movie! I can beat anyone....ANYONE who wants to challenge me to a quoting war. haha My friends make fun of me when we watch it because I even quote sound effects. XD
I had never read the book until about 2 years ago. I instantly fell in love!! It was one of the most hilarious books I have ever read in my entire life! So I'm still in love with the movie, but the book has stolen a piece of my heart forever. ^_^

the best line in the books is Vizzini and Fezzik and Inigo are on the boat with Buttercup and
Inigo says: Hes gaining on us
Vizzini: No hes not
Inigo: Your right, hes just getting closer, thats all!

or it goes something like that......anyway it was really funny!

yeah, i always thing about that. I grew up on the movie too, and i bet i could take you pretty well. Me and my friends know it by heart and we were quoting it and my friend's brother came in and said "You guys sound like a cult." my mom said we should have asked him if he wanted to join. Its a great movie. Anyway, yeah, "I AM NOT LEFT HANDED!"

Buttercup's baby probably isnt an actual book, and even though i read the first chapter i dont think Fezzik dies... im just one of those people :D

Way to be the optimist there!

I think we tramatized those boys for life...I know none of them will ever get over seeing me ewwing and ahhing over a dress....:D....I also know that John definatly is tramatized since first he saw me flipping over a dress then he saw me as a boy crazed girl in the play I was in recently....*giggles hysterically* sorry I am just not like that and poor poor boys...they will never get over me not being myself in such a drastic way...*holds sides*

well, if it is any consolation, he is barrel-shaped, with barrel-shaped legs, a barrel-shaped chest...

Sorry HB, it was too enticing! We all know you look nothing like that...

Question: Is there actually a sequel to Princess Bride, not counting the 2 or so chapters at the end of the book?

I think the "sequel" was sort of a joke...

Not sure though.

Ithilien

I just did an internet search. One site says that there is a sequel whose name has been changed to the Pit of Despair (say that in a cackling voice) but don't get your hopes up, all other sites seem to contradict this. I think the most of the sequel we're going to get is the few chapters of Buttercup's Baby.
