Oh yes, I love the 1939 movie, and the original book too, though they have soooo little in common!

The book is really different because it was supposed to be a commentary on inflation and politics and fun stuff like that. Even the shoes were different, but I love the movie, the book was spoiled by my AP American History class.

But watching that old movie is so refreshing to watch in place of some of the movies out today. And a few years ago when I was still in high school our theater department put on The Wiz, which was good, even though the Wiz movie is pretty awful.

Any of you read the book Wicked? Then there is the musical too. I love it all. The Wicked Witch of the West is my favorite heehee "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too!"

The Wizard of Oz is a great film, rich in associations for a whole variety of people - perhaps most interesting is the Gay Pride link. I also loved the second film, Return to Oz, which moved more into the gothic territory of fantasy classics like Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and Legend (the third of which was released in the same year, 1985, while Labyrinth came a year later).

I may have read the books as a child, but can't remember (they were certainly in the bookshelf). However, a few years ago I read a number of them via Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/b#a42), and was struck by the differences to the Judy Garland film. In particular, there is a very violent scene where the Tin Man, I think, chops his attackers to pieces with an axe.

Hey, how come The Wizard of Oz didn'y get a sticky? :( Is it because you don't like Dorothy's little dog Toto?

Huge I mean HUGE Wizard of Oz fan/collector here. I have so much Wizard of Oz stuff it's not even funny!! Every year I go to the Land of Oz. This is a theme park in Banner Elk, NC. They only open it one weekend a year now. But it was a running theme park for about 10 years back in the 70's - 80's (somewhere in the time frame.)

They just came out with Collector's Edition last fall. The 2 disc version is better than the 3 disc version.

I loved the Wizard Of Oz since I was itty bity. My dad would always read me all the stroies when Id go to sleep, and Id watch the movie every weekend at my grams & gramps when they'd babysit. It was one of my favs.
(O yes, Id watch return of oz many times as well, I had forgotten about that one!)

Now, this year, I'm in the middle of reading the book Wicked, and got to see the Musical when they toured in LA. I must say I like the musical story better so far. I love the musical songs in it too..proabably my fav would be Dancing Through Life & Defying Gravity.

I saw Wicked at Costco today and I almost bought it sence it was only $8.00. I am a big Oz fan but I am not sure I would like an Oz book geared for an older age group target. And I also like Oz because of Dorothy, and this book isn't about Dorothy and her friends. So should I still get the book?
