View Full Version : That Can't Be Lucy!

I just saw a pic of the kid who's playing Lucy!
OMG she's a dumpy little pug-nosed squat!
I PROTEST!
She's as bad as the Lucy in that awful PBS version - the one with the midget in the mouse suit impersonating Reepicheep!
And I had such HIGH hopes for this...

Girls, it one picture. Just one, and I'm sure you will agree that you have all had unflatering pictures taken.
I have heard from other sources that this Lucy is a phenominal actress. Astounding, is the word I think was used. Give her a chance, and don't make judgements based of a single picture.

This Lucy is by NO means "dumpy" and they probably read this site, so please refrain from such negative comments about her. Not only is she very young, she is going through her growing up faze and will most likely become very beautiful. When there are newer pics, I'll change it to a better one. Those pics aren't even of them in costume.
I wouldn't say she's "dumpy" either. She's wearing an awfully large coat.

I own all the BBCs and this new young lady playing Lucy is by far much prettier than her predisesor. When I saw her my first impression (besides, man that is not a verry good picture) was that she was adorable, and in her own right I think she'll do a wonderful job as Lucy.
And hey, whether or not she looks like what your oppinion of Lucy is or not (and she may well not look like Lucy to you, everyone is entitle to their own opinion) she's only a little girl and doesn't need to be called names.

I too must jump to the defence of the new Lucy! That pic is probably several months old, and we all change a lot at that age - and anyway she could look like a male wrestler as far as I'm concerned - it's her acting that matters and all that's really important! (I'm glad she doesn't look like a man or a wrestler though because that would be strange!)

Ah yes, I remeber a time when I spent many fretful days pouring over LOTR sights and going "That's not Aragorn!" "What do you mean they got Elijah Wood for Frodo!?!?" "Just wait till I send this angry petition to P.J...."

I second what specter said about them reading this site. The actors and those involved in the production have dropped by other narnian sites and left notes through friends. So chances are she, or someone else will read this message. Lets be nice okay.
And yes, we all have a vision of what Lucy will look like, and I doubt that they could have found someone who would have made us all happy.

JudyfromKansas: I'm tempted to ask how old you are, because those are very immature comments about someone's weight. Do not judge her for her weight. She's only 13 or 14 and has PLENTY of time. She's still growing up. No more negativity about her please, or you could find yourself on the outside of the forum, looking in.

I think people feel the need for everyone they watch in movies to be conform to the steroetypical face/figure etc, but CoN is about 'real' children - if you've seen pics of British children during wars you'll know they do not look like Kate and/or Ashely - but thats what makes it soo much better!

Yes indeed, she was 9 as of July. Which means she's at that stage where girls do sometimes put on a little bit of weight. However, it is COMPLETELY natural. If, at this age, she is worried about that, there is a small chance that she could mess up her body's natural growth.

Very nice sentiments, all.
Now for the reality check:
Do you really think Judy Garland's Dorothy, or Julie Andrews' Mary Poppins, would have been as successful had those ladies been unattractive? (And particularly in the case of Poppins, Andrews was cast against type - P.L. Travers' nanny was vain, but hardly a knockout. But Uncle Walt knew that audiences LIKE to look at pretty faces.) Good grief, look at the girl who plays frizzy-haired bucktoothed Hermoine in the "Potter" film series! Why didn't the producers pick someone less comely?
Why?
Duh. :D

It really shouldn't matter what she looks likeanyway! I've had another look at the picture, and you can see that there is nothing wrong with her! She looks to me like a normal 9/10 year old girl, happy, smiley and just right for the part.
As far as MAry Poppins etc goes, those films were made for an age wide audience, hence a bit of eye candy for the adults - just look at fox who is Dick van Dyke! ;-)

Dorothy wasn't 9 years old, and neither was Mary Poppins. And Hermione was 11. And yet you fail to see how immature you're being about all of this. So far, you're the first person I've seen say "holy crap, look at that ugly girl, my she's dumpy." Well I'm sorry if she doesn't fit what you would like to see. The Casting Directors cast who they feel is right for the part. You sound like you have some growing up to do, or you need a boost to your own self-esteem.

Well, FWIW, I wasn't the only one on this thread who objected to the choice for Lucy.
It's a bummer to find out that one of my favorite books is going to be made into a movie - a movie backed by Disney, no less - only to discover that my favorite character in that book is being portrayed by someone who might be a cute kid in real life but who, in that picture, at least, looks like Spanky from "Our Gang".
Well, what can one expect from Walden Media, whose most recent offering was the box-office disaster "Around The World In Eighty Days".

Yeah, that is a really sweet photo. She is only 9-years-old. Does anyone know how long she has been acting? This is exciting. She will do great, I can tell. Lucy is supposed to be a little awkward, right?

*chokes* well I've seen the films and umm... well *cough*notAragorn*cough* same for Elijah Wood.
I'm glad Lucy is not some mini-supermodel. Like cslouis said she supposed to be awkward. I wanted the hobbits in LotR to be fatter, Legolas, Faramir, and Boromir to have raven hair, and Arwen to have gray eyes, like the book. Keeping her character closer to the books, she's meant to be cute, not ravashing. That's what stirs her jealousy in VDT.

I'l admit that's not a particularly flattering photo. Doesn't bother me either way. Like others said, she's only 9 (or 10). Plus, being a guy, I don't have latent jealousy issues or anything like that.
And the kids aren't the most interesting part for me anyway. What I'm really looking forward to are the goblins, castles, giants, dragons, huge battles, breathtaking landscapes, and so on. You can see kids in any movie, but fauns and talking lions? Now that's something. ;)

03-02-2005, 05:25 PM
Yeah, don't make fun of the actress just because of one not-so-great picture, guys. I think she's cute, and she's not supposed to be gorgeous, remember? That's why she gets so jealous of Susan in prince Caspian. The acting is really all that matters, and you shouldn't diss on her just because she's not a supermodel.

Give me a break, too small? Well, I've said my piece about Lucy, and there really isn't much more that I can say, other than that the casting directors from Lord of the Rings did casting for this, and we've seen it work out for the best, so I trust them with Narnia.
Asside from that, during the shoot, a couple of the characters grew a few inches.

work out for the best? sure they could have done a lot worse, but I think they could have done better too, concerning LotR at least with Elijah and Viggo. I think the rest of them were fine. I hope all of the main actors do not fall short like I feel Elijah and Viggo did, at least in the RotK.

I have to disagree with you there DoLW. I really liked Viggo as Aragorn; I thought that main problem was with the writing of his part, and the direction; Viggo himself I thought fit well. Elijah I agree with you on though; the actors I had the most problems with was the female ones, but I suppose that would better be discussed in a different form.
I really aprove of the casting so far though on LWW, I think all the actors certainly look the part.

03-06-2005, 08:16 PM
I agree, GrayCloak.
Viggo did look his part, though at first when I first saw the movie pictures (before it came out) I thought he was the dumbest looking person to ever play Aragorn and I wondered what in the world Peter Jackson was thinking. But when I saw him in action, I couldn't imagine any one else playing the part. It just wasn't possible. Anyway, that's what I think...
Oh, and when I saw who was playing the parts in LWW, I was like "they don't look the part at all". But now that I think about it, those guys involved in the
movie really know what they're doing and the actors/actress' actually do look right for their parts...as a matter of fact...I think that they look perfect!
Sure, Lucy is a little chubby, but aren't a lot of 9 year olds? I think that her being chubby makes her all the more adorable. Chubby kids are the cutest!!!!!!! :D

I know I'm posting this a little late in the game, but I just registered. ;)
I don't see anything wrong with Georgie...Someone, I forget who, said she looked dumpy, but she was wearing a heavy winter coat (yeah, I know that was said several times), and also she was smiling. Smiling pushes your cheeks up a little bit, making them look fatter than they really are.
Judy Garland WAS attractive...but she didn't fit that time period's picture of beauty. She was shorter than girls like Lana Turner and such, she wasn't "busty", and she was type-cast in "little girl" parts well into her teens. Louis B. Mayer, one of the founders of MGM, actually called her "little hunchback" because she had mild curvature of the spine, and she had a dental piece to wear for movies because her teeth were a bit crooked. Her life began its path to self-distruction because people were telling her how thin she had to be, because she was popping uppers during the day and downers during the night to keep on a schedule, and because in spite of all this it still wasn't enough to satisfy the people who asked this of her. So, personally, I don't think we should be worrying so much about how a child star looks, so much as how well they can act.

I just read the Newsweek thing on Georgie turning 9 during filming, etc. And I don't know why it hadn't occurred to me before, but I noticed in the photo of the four children, they're all brunettes.
Doesn't it say somewhere in CON that Lucy was golden-haired and merry, something like that? I expected her to be blond...

Wow, that is an adorable picture. She doesn't look real! But anyway, you're right, Inkspot, Lucy was blond in the LWW, the only one of the Pevensies to be described as "golden haired." (This is admittedly a description of her after she grows up, but as children's hair generally gets darker rather than lighter as they grow older, I'm quite sure she was blond as a child.) I'm willing to forgive them that slight oversight, however, as long as Georgie can act, and I'm sure she can.

I saw a quote from Adamson saying something like it (Lucy's hair color) was personal preference. So he is aware of it. I guess I can understand finding an actress first and going with their natural hair; I believe that for the most part people are born with the color that looks best on them.
I guess it makes since to have all the kids be brunnettes 'cause, well, they are brothers and sisters...
And I must say, I am becoming more relieved seeing some much better pictures of Lucy. Sure, that first picture was cute and all, but I don't think that it, or any of the pictures first released, were the best portraits to use for publicity. Not that any of them looked "bad" in them; they just weren't well-taken pictures.

Hello All! I realise that I am jumping into this thread extremely late but I could not resist!
I think the actress for Lucy is going to be just fine and in fact think she is just fine. Calling her dumpy was...a sure sign of the total lack of taste, chivalry, and otherwise objective perceptive skills. She is definately way better (must I emphasise "way") than the BBC Lucy was, no offense meant their either. I had really been afraid that the new Lucy would be 1. Overweight, which she is not, 2. Too big, which she is not, and uninteligent looking, which she is not. Therefore, personally, she has very much acheived my expectations. The hair color is too bad but hey, if they get the story line and do not bautch the talking beasts, it is going to be wonderful! I am really looking forward to them.
I really hope to get to know all of you better as time progresses.

Welcome, Danger, I don't think I have seen you post before.
I completely agree with you about Lucy. She is adorable, and I think she and all the kids will be very good in their roles.
I think the earlier posts on this subject (the mean ones) were based on one bad photo that was released early on, but now you can clearly see that Georgie is very good for the part of Lucy.

...just registered and had to post to this.
I must admit I was a bit taken aback by the first photo I saw of Georgie. I think all of us who objected so strongly to the Lucy in the old BBC version were desperate to see the Lucy in our heads put onto the screen, and it was startling to see that little impish face in the picture. But ultimately, in a film where your main characters are kids, you have to base your casting decisions on whether they can ACT, because if they can't, no amount of type casting is going to make it a great film, just an annoying one (re: anything with the Oleson twins). So I consoled myself with the assumption that Georgie must have gotten the role on talent, which actually made me feel better about the films in general. Obviously they were taking them seriously.
Now, having seen other screenshots and a very bad-resolution version of the trailer (a curse upon dialup), I have no worries. What an absolute doll she is. Cute as they come. Whoever said she was dumpy has been watching too many American tween dramas in which 24-year-olds play high schoolers, and fourteen-year-olds play children supposedly under ten. Little kids have round cheeks. Get over it, or get over your own anorexia.
And good point about the fact that she is not supposed to be drop-dead pretty, so as to play up the Susan-envy factor.
Even the bad-res trailer gave me goosebumps. MAN am I excited!

Yes, I haven't posted anywhere else yet. I was a little startled by the first photo (photos). Bu it wasn't a bad sort of surprise. The main thing I was surprised over was hair color. But, as was mentioned, that is a minor factor if she can act. Otherwise I think she looks great as the part she is supposed to play.
Another charachter I was worried about was Peter. I was hinking that it would be hard to find an older kid (mid teens, right) who didn't look too old or too young. Casting child roles has got to be tough. But any way, they did a good job. I have not seen the trailer yet. My dialup won't handle the download quickly and my wallet won't handle a long download so...have to wait to make a trip to the big city where they have broad band. But I am excited, I have been waiting for these films ever since Walden announced they were going to be working on them (that was, I think back in 2003?).
But about casting, again, I think the comments made about these kids looking like kids is just right...and PRAISE GOD! We're not going to be assailed by images of children that you would never be able to find in real life. And so much of what Lewis did was so great because it was about real life (I know that sounds strange concerning fantasy but hey, it is true).
About it being a Lord of the Rings rehashm, I don't have to worry...I never saw Lord of the Rings!

Thanks, glad to be here.
I didn't think she looked bad, either...she just wasn't what I, and apparently many others, had in mind when we pictured Lucy. Hence the surprise. I have a sneaky suspicion it's our own hubris that makes us think the movie characters should look like our own personal interpretations! I prefer to tell myself it's that we are such slavish fans of the material that any deviation from the slightest detail makes us squirm. he he
But as I said, the more I see of her, the more I'm convinced she's perfect for the role. And it's not like Lewis described any of them in detail. I think most people's mental images come from Pauline Bayne's original illustrations.
By the way, if anyone is interested, I am in the middle of doing illustrations for the books for a website that is doing features on each of them in prep. for the film. Anyone who would like to see them is welcome to visit my gallery: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/s/u/sunrise/sunrise.html

Sunrise
05-14-2005, 11:15 AM
The Black Cauldron was a Disney animated film made back in the early 80's, which tanked at the box office and sank into deserved oblivion until it was released on video in the late 90's. It was supposedly based on Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, but in my opinion any resemblance to the books is accidental. To be fair, the studio was in a state of major upheaval at the time and the film suffered from a lack of direction as a result. It has kind of a cult following, as it is beautifully animated and certainly different from the singing-animals, cutesy-poo stuff they were doing at the time, but I consider it a tragic waste of the golden material they had on hand.
Unfortunately Disney still owns all rights to anything Prydain-related. I doubt they will do anything with it, which is a shame. I'd die to see good quality live-action films made out of those, and it would be especially nice to start them while the author is still alive!

Lucy in the LWW BBC version wasn't to attractive. She looked better a couple of years later in the latter chronicles. I hope the actress in the movie LWW is made to look better. I was also wondering is anyone is worried that the ages of these actors and actresses playing the children being as much as 5 years older than the character they play will have a negitive impact. The actor playing Peter is really 17 while Peter in the LWW book is likely no more than 12 or 13. Lucy in the book is about 6 or 7 while the actress is 9. In the movie The Wizard Of Oz, Judy Garland was 15 playing a 9 year old Dorothy. But that was a musical and it took a lot of liberties. It was fine in that movie, but in LWW it may be less accepted.

I loved the Loyd Alexander books. He wrote a number of different series and most of them were very good. The Prydain series was a good series thou it is much like The Lord of the Rings in it's plot. This should be a different thead so people can better talk about the Prydain books. ;)

Ya, as i mentioned before (i don't know where) Peter looks too normal. He is suppost to be a leader, but he doesn't look like one in the movie. I like who they cast for Edmond, though, i just hope he does a good job acting, because his role could make or break the movie, with the whole mystic of him betraying the group, and then turning to the good side.
TimmyofOz
05-29-2005, 03:54 AM
I don't mind Peter looking young and not like a leader. He is suppose to be still a child. That I why I don't like using a 17 year old as Peter. That's old enough to be a soldier, not a child that still plays hide and seek. He is a King Arthor type.

I like all the kids they have cast -- at least from what I have seen. In the photo at the top of the narniafans home page of Peter with his sword (Rhindon), he looks exactly as I would imagine Peter. I don't think he looks too old to be a child; in the beginning of the trailer, where they are dropped to wait for Mrs. Macready, he looks like a young teen.

Hello! I'm new to these posts, but wanted to take a second and put my 2 cents in. :)
Haha, I think I seem to be the only person in the world that actually liked the old Lucy. It was watching the old BBC LWW that got me hooked to the Chronicles of Narnia, and she was my favorite (and the reason why I chose this name). My only major turn off about the old Pevenses is the fact that they all looked the same age. Besides that, I LOVED the BBC movie, especially Aslan.
I think that the new Lucy is going to do well... I work at a movie theater as a projectionist, so I have seen the trailer of the new LWW at least 30 times, and every time I get goosebumps, I'm so excited that it is finally coming out. I was very hesitant when I first saw Lucy, but now I really feel that she will do a great job. She is a very cute little girl, and I'm looking forward to her performance :)

I loved the BBC Lucy, too! She looked exactly how a young girl should look like. I didn't think the girls looked the same age, but i felt the boys were too much the same in height, and you had to distinguish between their ages to understand Edmond's betrayl. From what I see in the new movie, I think they chose the right people (visually) for the kids (except Lucy, I will always want the BBC Lucy)

I'm sorry to bring this topic up again--I know some places are really picky about posting in topics that haven't been posted in for awhile--but I wanted to post a question, and this seemed the place to do it.
I've seen only two movie versions of LWW, though I've been a huge fan of the book my entire life, and now with the pictures from this one, the question still haunts me: why does Lucy always look so incredibly young in the films? In the books, she's supposed to be around eight, isn't she? To me, the actresses always look to be so much younger.
Forgive me if I'm wrong about Lucy's age, but I can't remember Lewis ever giving an exact age for her--it always seemed to be just one of those given things.

I can understand your comment about Lucy; but I always had the opposite feeling about casting her. I thought the actress in the BBC was too old,so when I saw the casting for this film I was extatic! Frankly, I really like the casting job done for Lucy. I was really afraid that they would go in the footsteps of the BBC version!
The problem, mainly, with the BBC version Lucy was that she was too old, and probably big for her age to boot! I taught english for two years to kids ages six through ten and, frankly, eight and nine year olds are small. It is part of being a kid, I think (I was one of those once, right?).
The hair color was a surprise, but I'm letting that slide.
Why is the general consenses that Lucy is eight in the books. Does it ever say? Did I miss something?
I need to get the BBC version. I hardly remember anything from that rendition of LWW, except Lucy and the beavers! I do remember PC, VDT, and SC really well, I do not know why I am so fuzzy on LWW. And the BBC set is spendy, like $50. Ikes!

I think all of the child actors in the BBC version were really about the same age. The girl playing Lucy looked like she could even have been older than the guy playing Peter (he was kind of squirrely looking...not saying he did a bad job, but he seemed very young). How they differentiated the ages was by having the kids over exaggerate. Lucy and Edmund simpered, whined and hallooed like chimps on helium while Peter and Susan were insufferably condenscending and/or patronizing, IMO. For a low budget project the acting was OK after all that but the kids hardly seemed like siblings.
With the casting in the new movie I think Lucy looks alot younger than the rest of her siblings but Edmund also looks alot younger than either Peter and Susan. It's nice to see a more obvious age difference between them and I think they all kind of look alike. Peter and Lucy both are sandy haired blonde/brownish and Susan and Edmund seem to look like each other with all four sharing basic similarities.
What I think this new Lucy has over the other one is charisma. We only have photos and a trailer to go on, but she seems genuinaly sweet and winsome. The other Lucy acts and talks like Lucy of the books but I have a hard time believing it is really her.

I LOVE the new Lucy!!! That's what an eight-year-old looks like, people! At least that's what they are supposed to look like when they haven't been pumped up full of hormone-laced processed food all their lives.
I always thought BBC Lucy was too old, but it made it worse that Peter was too young. Once PC rolled around and Edmund's voice had changed, you got the feeling he could have kicked Peter's butt in a fair fight. And Susan only seemed old because she was all prissy and maternal.
Another funny casting thing about the old films: the same actress plays every witch.
I was watching PC yesterday and thought: "Gee...the hag talks just like the white wi....oh."
So then I had to pop in SC to see if she also played the green witch. Yup!
Man...she must have cut them a real salary deal!
And here's food for thought: how does Eustace, in SC, manage to procure the EXACT SAME outfit he wore in VDT, even though it's what...fifty years later? Incredible! Narnia, the land of magic indestructible raiment!

I have to disagree with you there, I thought that Lucy was whiny, but that was about it. I mean - Edmund was supposed to be a little snot, wasn't he? And Peter and Susan hit me more of overprotective than codenscending, which is a trait often found in siblings; esspecially if there's a big age differance and the parents are away.
Peter in the BBC version was shorter than Susan! Ha ha! :D
Girls often grow before boys - so that's not odd at all. For the past five years I was ALOT taller then all the boys I knew, and It's only now that they've caught up with me.

Very true, but seeing as how the BBC version of Lucy is a brunette I never gave her hair color in the new movie a second thought - I wonder if her hair color will get lighter when they show her as 'Lucy the Valient' though hair usually darkens when you get older - not vise versa.

Just to clarify my comments on the BBC kids:
Yes, I think the acting is terrible but for what it is (low budget, made-for-TV serial) I can tolerate it. I wouldn't forgive the acting if it was a made-for-cinema or HBO movie. And I do think the Edmund actor is whiney. Yes, he's supposed to be a snot at first, but even afterwards I thought he was a bit whiney too.
And NuggetBuster...THANK YOU!!! That comment is very true and I agree with it completely.

Well, sure. But I'd sure rather have Judy Garland play Dorothy than...say...Ashanti ;) In other words, the right actress for the part. That was my original gripe. Although, after seeing the trailer, I must say the actress for Lucy has a real appeal that the still pictures didn't convey. Shame on that photographer! ;)

My only objection to Lucy came at the onset of the film. In the C.S. Lewis books, Lucy is repeatedly described as having curly blonde locks. So, at first, I decided that the casting department had got it all wrong. By the end of the film, after watching this "Lucy" act, I was convinced that it was C.S. Lewis who had got it all wrong. Georgie did a great job!

I desperately wanted Susan to cover Lucy's eyes during THe Stone Table scene, because I just wanted to protect her from anything that would harm her innocence!!

OK Judy-
You've seen the film.
Are you still displeased with the casting of Lucy?
I think her entry into Narnia and meeting with Mr. Tumnus will be considered a classic moment in cinema for years to come.
I cried during those first two minutes through the wardrobe. The wide-eyed wonder and her smile literally lit up the screen. She wasn't consistently that good throughout the movie, but that scene was perfectly executed IMO.
I'm sure Mr. Adamson deserves a lot of the credit, but to me, Lucy was better cast than the other three children.
If looks arer so important, why did I wish Anna Popplewell would just go home?

Georgie rocks! Well, always thought she would be good for the role. When reading the book I never pictured her with curly hair so that all made sence to me. But in one of the last scenes, when Georgie did have curly hair I loved it!
Before the movie I emailed Georgie and she emailed me back several times. She's a really nice kid, smart too :)

This is an old thread, and one in my opinion that should have been deleted because the original statement of " That Can't be Lucy" is an unecessary insult to Georgie Henley. Thankfully she has many fans and most people here adore her as Lucy. Most likely, it was an unflattering picture of her, but still...if you can't say anything nice about her, don't say anything at all.
