here it is -
It was one of those gloriously lazy summer days when one just feels like doing nothing but sitting back and drinking in the warm summer air. This particular summer day High King Peter was staying with King Lune of Archenland at Anvard with his brother King Edmund and his sisters Queen Susan and Queen Lucy. They had been staying at Anvard for some time now, as King Lune was returning the favour (King Lune, Corin, Cor, and Aravis had stayed at Cair Paravel one year as a holiday).
It was upon this day that King Edmund happened upon Prince Corin staring dreamily out of one of the windows that faced the back garden of Anvard. When Edmund walked over to the window for closer inspection, he found that the object, or rather person, that had Corin so enthrawled was Lucy, lounging upon a garden chair reading a book. Susan and Aravis were also in the garden, but Edmund had a feeling that Corin was not aware they were there. In fact, Edmund didn’t think that Corin even knew he was there, even though he was standing right beside him.
“Hullo Corin, lovely weather today isn’t it?” If Corin was startled, he didn’t show it.
“Hmm? Oh yes I suppose so” answered Corin without shifting his gaze.
“I don’t suppose the scenery is half bad either…” Edmund said with a tone of mock serisousness.
“Yes, well the gardeners have kept the garden well this year” Corin answered dreamily, all the while staring at Lucy, who had gotten up now, and had walked over and started picking flowers with Susan and Aravis for the vase in the sitting room.
“I was talking about a lovely young person whose favourite thing to do is read in the summer sunshine…” At this Corin sat up straight, spun around and looked at Edmund.
“You don’t think that I’m in lo…” Corin stopped mid-sentence for he had a growing anxiety that Edmund had been standing there for a great while, and had put two and two together in his mind and worked out Corin’s growing love for Lucy. It had all started quite innocently as a boyish “crush” about two years ago, when the household at Anvard went to stay at Cair Paravel for a holiday. Now, over the years, his “crush” had grown and was almost bursting out of him, and he was having a very hard time trying to hide it.
“Now come on, we all realise this little charade you’re playing, everyone except maybe Lucy, who seems oblivious to the fact that you stare at her across the room, or out a window on a daily basis.” Corin felt that there was no point in denying this, so he just stared at his feet.
“Come on now, none of this. Faint heart never won a lady you know.”
“It didn’t?”
“Of course not”, Edmund said and then added in a lower tone, “or at least so I am told.” Corin and Edmund had become great friends over the years, and Corin felt that Edmund could keep a secret, so he decided to confide in him.
“Well I’m scared of revealing my love to her, for fear of rejection. I mean, she is almost two years older than me. Lucy could never love me the way I love her” sighed Corin.
“Of course not! Everyone loves in different ways.”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“Well of course she could, but what if she is in the same situation as you? What if she thinks you’ll never love her the way she loves you because you’re two years younger than her?”
“Do you think it’s possible?” Corin asked excitedly.
“Very possible! But you have to tell her of your love, otherwise we won’t get anywhere. Write her a poem, write her a love letter, do anything! You don’t even have to put your name on it yet. Just do something!”
“Ok! I think I will.”
“That’s the boy, just whatever you do, don’t hurt my baby sister. If you do, Corin Thunder-Fist as you may be, Peter and I will surely take you on, and I’m sure Susan would help too”, at this remark, Corin went a shade paler, but Edmund cheered him up, “don’t worry ol’ boy that’ll never happen. Mmm…seems about time for lunch.” And with that, walked out of the room, leaving Corin to his thoughts.
“Ed is right. I need to stop hiding my love. But how to reveal it to Lucy? I know, I’ll ask Cor! He’s well and truly in love, so he should know how to handle it!” thought Corin as he started for the dinning hall.
