Here is a way to help me make Narnia Fans a site that is truly fan oriented.
Now that I've got the site pretty much set for how it's going to work, with a few more adjustments coming, what this thread is for, is site suggestions, and questions for me about anything site related or not.
So, ask me questions or make suggestions.

Do we have a graphic link thing that I can put on my site to link to this one? Like the one for the Hobbit Movie one on the top of the page. I think that would be neat.
I do have to say I think this is my favorite Narnia site. B)

That little picture is called a "Avatar". And it's really easy to do. Go to the link above that says: My Controls (or click here) (http://www.narniafans.com/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=00)
Once you are there, look at the left hand side for the Menu. Then below that should be a submenu called Personal Profile. Once you see that click on a link that says: Edit Avatar Settings (or click here) (http://www.narniafans.com/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=24)
And from there just follow the instructions on changing your avatar. You can pick from any of the pre-installed avatars or upload your own if you have one that size.

Quick Q about the new forum thingy , when we post our intelligent and useful views on various subjects in the bar at teh tiop of the post to the right hand side are some little symbols, most I understand, hazard sign for mods, numbers is number of that post in the thread, but what about the 'adding to soandso's repuation' one? PLease explain to an ignorant fool! Thanking you kindly in advance

If you see a very insightful post, you can reward someone with a reputation point. :) You have to give reputation points to 10 different people before you can give point to the same person twice.

This is a serious suggestion. There are way too many different topic sections. With so many choices, there could be the same conversation happening on two different threads with totally different people. I would suggest: 1) Chronicles of Narnia, 2) Religion and Narnia, 3) Narnia Films, 4) Lantern Waste [random threads]. There are a lot of topics that are hardly touched. All the topics fall under one of these four larger topics. This would better organize the forum as a whole.
There are 18 topics on the main page, and even then when I click on one of the topics, another list of topics is likely to pop up. Too much. Keep it simple, please.

That would take a LOT of memory that could be used elsewhere.

Alright.. give me an example of how you would organize it, to keep what we've got, and also improve on it. I get what you are saying, but I don't want to orphan any forums.

Ok, so my idea is to have five forums on the main index page. Each forum has a specific purpose and contains only threads (no hidden forums within forums). There are already five main forums on the idex page: Cair Paravel, The Films, The Books, The Games, The Eagle and Child, and The Lantern Waste. To better organize the topics of discussion and encourage more posts, I suggest five different forums on the main page that will include all of the existing discussion topics.
1. Narnia Media- threads to discuss Narnia in films, games, radio, etc.
2. Chronicles of Narnia- threads for talking about the series.
3. Religion and Narnia- threads about Narnia’s relationship with Christianity.
4. Lantern Waste- threads that do not fit into another forum.
5. Site Feedback and Ideas- let us know what you think.
The basic idea is that all the threads found in The Films and The Games would be now found under "Narnia Media". All the threads found in The Books, other than Christianity and Narnia, would be found in "Chronicles of Narnia". All the threads from the Christianity and Narnia forum would now be found under the "Religion and Narnia" forum. And all the threads from The Lantern Waste and The Eagle and Child would now be found under "Lantern Waste". This provides better organization and many threads will be shown when a forum gets clicked on, instead of clicking on a forum and then another forum and then seeing the threads. The way it is right now is too complicated. Making it simple would encourage more people to join the discussions for sure.
You could even post something like: "Lantern Waste (formerly The Eagle and Child & The Lantern Waste)" just to let everyone know of the changes for a few weeks. It's a good idea. Please consider it.

Alrighty, give me some time to come up with a plan of action, because there are some threads that belong in their own forum (hence the Land of Duffers) and some forums should exist (such as C.S. Lewis, because this site is about him also.) So give me some time, and I'll try and figure out the best way to do this.
Warrior-Poet51088
03-22-2005, 11:07 AM
That sounds great! Not to overwhelm you, Specter and/or Euphrates, but where would all the threads about us writers go? I could see them in either the Media section, or the Lantern Waste.
Like I said, this sounds like a great idea!!!!!!!!
Euphrates
03-22-2005, 03:35 PM
Yeah, feel free to toy around with the suggestion. It's more of a general idea than a specific plan. I think an added forum exclusively about CS Lewis would be a good idea. I think Land of the Duffers would fit into Lantern Waste, because that is pretty much the point of Lantern Waste. People who want to talk about Tolkien will go to Lantern Waste, and the most recent threads will be shown so that they can post in Tolkien related threads as well as reading the titles of other threads they may want to participate in, like... the Writing Club. Encouraging more posts and more of a "community" feel.
Things like the Writing Club, which is now it's own thread in The Professor's Notebook forum, would continue to be a thread in Lantern Waste. The added benefit is that someone going to the Writing Club may see another interesting thread in Lantern Waste, say... about Tolkien, and choose to post in there also.
Whatever you want to do with my ideas is great, they're just general ideas about ways to make narniafans a better overall forum. Thanks for listening!

One problem I just realized is this: Since there would be soooooooo many threads all groued together, it might get annoying to try to search for the 3-4 threads you regularly post in to see if anybody's responded.
Just a thought.
Euphrates
03-22-2005, 08:12 PM
That wouldn't be the case. When someone replies to a thread, it jumps to the top of the list. Also, there is a feature that I'm not sure this site uses (but is available) where an icon next to each thread let's you know if there is a thread with new posts since your last visit. That feature would probably be put to use if the site is reorganized.
Also, you may find other threads that are equally, if not more, interesting than the normal ones you post in.
The point is that you wouldn't have to search around to find your usual threads because if someone has replied it would probably be on the first page.

If you go into your User CP there is a list down the side. There is one for Edit Avatar and one for Edit Sig. If you want a pic in your avatar, you have to click on the Browse button ot type in the exact address of the picture you want. Its a bit more difficult to put a pic in a sig...

Hey there heartstringz. Well as of now, we do not have an official size, so as long as its not overly large and bogs up the dialup members too much with loading time its fine. So just be reasonable. I'm sure that sometime in the future we will have to restrict it more when we have more and more members with them. But for now enjoy a bit of freedom.

Once in a while if I look at my User CP, I see something about Reputation or reputation points, and a little list of 3 or 4 links to old threads I've posted in, and sometimes a note from someone who was also posting in that thread ... What is this? What are reputation points or whatever it says, and how to they get there?
waterhogboy
10-20-2005, 12:44 PM
If someone likes a post you've written and think it is particularly... good, they can choose to give you reputation. You can find out who's given you reputation - because it says in that part of the user CP you were looking at.
However, I myself am not completely sure what having reputation does...

So, I have a quick question. I'm relatively new here, and I see lots of threads that I may want to reply... but they are ancient. What are the rules for the forum? And, who are the mods? Thanks!

Could we have the ability to rate threads? Like, if a thread was really good/funny, we could give a 5/5 or something.

That's right at the top of each thread, or when you reply, there's a box that says "Rate Thread."

can you put a trash bin on the private messaging? so even if we deleted the other mails, and we forgot that theres something special about the mail we can pretty much know where to look at again?
oh, and btw, can you at least make much bigger space for the inbox? 50 messages is so little, that makes me delete mails each day,

This is more of a question because I am not exactly sure where my question would fit one of the forums on this TDL (The Dancing Lawn) message board.
Has there been any discussions on C.S. Lewis and his thoughts on George MacDonald?
I had to ask because J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings has been produced into major movies; furthermore, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is currently playing on its second day. Would any of George MacDonald's books become a major movie such as Phanastes?

suggestion: some of the threads in certain forums have nothing to do with the topics that the forum was intended for..which makes it confusing for some ppl when they want to go find something and end up not finding what they want .... if you'd like when i have free time i could help out sort some threads? i mean im not really an expert on it but if someone would be willing to tell me how to transfer threads to forums, ill be glad to help out??

Aye, I feel your concern. The Duffers (and many others) have become cluttered. But unfortunatly, fo ryou to gain the powers to move threads to different forums you have to be a mod. But don't worry, our expert team of mods can (and probably will) help clean up the forums.
Hope this helps :)

Instead of just havin 'member ranks' (junior member, member, senior member)
how about we have an assortment of characters from narnia for example, you can start out as a Wardrobe > Lamp Post > Faun > Beaver > etc. other characters...and highest could be King/ Queen ? hehe i just thought it's be a fun idea. :)

being a junior member, member, etc. does depend on how many posts you have. I think you need about 500 to be a senior member. I think. I'm not one to say. :D

Go to your User CP (top left) and then press Edit Signature which should be by the Edit Avatar button. Then copy the URL of the image you want, press the 'Insert Image' button (the one with the little mountain above the box where you type) then paste the URL, then press Save Signature, and then you should have the image in your signature. I don't think you can upload an image from your computer, I think it has to already be online. If the image is not online I would suggest getting a free Photo Bucket. I Hope this helped. :)

Renard Rouge has got it spot on..the post counts been removed from the Duffers (i think..it must have been looking at the evidence!), bacisally to emphasise that the post count doesn't really matter here, it's what you say more than how many times you say it, just evens things out a bit between people..there's no difference between 10,000 posts and 10 posts aslong as they are informative and lovely!

They can be found on the internet or ask someone to make you one.

It is in the Quick Link pull down menu (near the top or the page).

i think every time the mods see a very mature member they should promote them to becoming a mod.
Aravis Kenobi

I agree with that. I know a couple of people on here worthy of becoming mods.
Elf Of The Grey Havens
07-10-2006, 09:39 PM
It's happening, kind of. If every mature member was a mod, we would have like 90% mods. But Specter is starting to train some mods, like Dernhelm.
Aravis Kenobi
07-10-2006, 09:44 PM
And you, don't forget. It is true that if that happened, then we would have nothing but mods, and what's the fun in that? I think Specter training junior mods for the future is a good idea. That way, if one of the mods decides not to be a mod anymore, then Specter will I guess have a replacement. But I think I'd have too much fun being a mod (like in deleting stuff, especially spam threads) to retire from being a mod! But, I don't have good judgement sometimes, and I'd have to have a lot of help in deciding what to do. But, I'll never be a mod, and I'm having lots of fun being a senior member. I can say what I want (kind of in a nice way) and not get shot for it! Make sense?
holyboy
07-10-2006, 09:44 PM
I agree with that. I know a couple of people on here worthy of becoming mods.
If you believe someone desearves to be a mod, I would suggest sending a PM to Specter, or if that makes you uneasy, send it to a mod, and we will forward the message to him. A person nominating another is a great way to get them noticed.
Aravis Kenobi
07-10-2006, 09:45 PM
I did, actually. And Specter said he'd talk about it with the other mods, so, I hope the person I nominated gets to become a mod.

Well, I noticed that a lot of the similiar threads are getting or have gotten locked. Since a lot of times, new members haven't gone back through the old posts to see if they are posting something similiar, it would be neat to have maybe five or six STICKIED topics of the same questions. Since I've been here on the forum, the MOST POPULAR questions that newbies ask is
Did you like the movie?
What's your fave character/least fave character?
I want more friends!
What would you do in Narnia?
What kind of pets do you like?
I've seen some of those questions repeated more than a few times. Do you think having a stickied topic would help prevent redundant questions?
Aravis Kenobi
07-14-2006, 08:56 AM
That makes tons of sense IceMaiden. Having five or six stickied topics of the most popular topics would cut down on spam, and might upset less members.

Some people are just lazy though. I remember on just about every single forum I've been on, the moderators or owner of the forum would put it out there in BOLD PRINT to do a search so multiple threads of the same topic wouldn't crowd the forum up and get repetitive...but did people listen or read DO A SEARCH FIRST? That can be intimidating to newer members; to have their thread locked and get a PM from a policemod. I know when I was a new member I did not know about the search button, and many new members are not doing this intentionally. A short message in their locked thread should be sufficiant for now.

Personally i LIKE using the Search button! But maybe newbies don't see the Search button and all the other things like the User Cp, FAQ, Quick Links, etc!

I am sure they will know where a thread should have gone if it was moved to the right section. We don't want to scare away new members, we want to welcome them. A PM telling them that their thread was in the wrong section, where it should have gone, and where the search button is all from a random mod is a little intimidating. Sure, if they persist to post in the wrong area, they will get a PM. But for one offence we probably won't PM them.

Some people, like me, don't always see everything at once when you're new. Those that have been here a while know where everything is, new members really don't. I certainly didn't when I first joined. I had to ask where the group memberships were on the CP!

It's because we're too excited at being new members, esp on a terrific forum like this one. When I first came here I was all over the place!!

I mentioned this to Elf: why not have the decoding thing when you register so it might cut down on the spam? He said it might not be a feature of vBulletin forums, which could be true. If it was possible, I think it should be added to the registration process which might make it harder for spammers and computers to bog down the server. Just a thought. :)

I really like that idea, I find forums with that have hardly in robot computer things coming on and selling their products, and I really think the forum should get something like that!

I know that we have a Gone and Away thread, but why not have a thread for when those that have posted in the afore mentioned thread to say that they've come back? Like, Here to Stay or something like that. Just a thought.

Generally, members post that they are back in the Gone and Away Thread. Or they just post and people notice they are back :)

We've always wanted to do something like that and haven't gotten around to it. Not because we are lazy, but because we wanted to make it much bigger than that. I can't delve into it, because that might ruin a possible surprise. Thanks for reminding me about it though.

PS I'm refering to the changing of junior member, and senior member stuff.

Yes, thats what I meant.
I had another idea, you could have a forum fro all the quizs, like the Narnia triva, Bible quiz LOTR quiz etc all in the same forum

i have question: the poll thing on the NarniaFans homepage.....isn't it kinda old.....it's been there since like the creation of this website......maybe a new one?
don't know if anyone has said this before. sorry if i'm repeating someone else's suggestion.

08-22-2006, 08:35 PM
well, i see that there's a big thing about who should play Prince Caspian cause that's a really big deal. also whether we fans agree on the location of the film being shot.
i know there are already a lot of polls in this forum but there those who do not come to this forum but just to the homepage for the news. they may not want to participate in the forum but still want to express their opinions a bit...
the truth is i wasn't expecting you to answer the way you did :D
i see it requires a bit of thought, but i'm sure there's lots of topics or Narnia related issues we'd like to express our opinions on. even if it is just a poll......

I got a question. What exaclly dose it mean when it says on our profiles that a person has say 2 Referrals?
Aravis Kenobi
09-07-2006, 07:55 PM
Remember when you first registered? And it says, "Referrals?" A referral is someone who has recommended someone else to join this site. I have a referral from junior dragster 4730.

I`ve got 2 referrals so dose that mean I reccomended someone to join the site? But I`ve only told 1 person I know in real life to join this site.

yes. If you said hey, this is an awesome site, think about joining. Then they put your username in the Referrals box. Maybe the person you referred convinced someone else to join by way of your friend.

We seem to get a lot of new members who ask the same questions over and over...I suggest that we sticky some of the most common questions, such as WHAT IS YOUR FAVE CHARACTER? HOW DID YOU LIKE NARNIA? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OUTFIT IN NARNIA?
Unfortunately LOL I am guilty of answering those questions over and over. :D But it would be nice to sticky a few of the most frequently asked Narnia questions.

The problem with this is we will have an overflow of stickies and new topics would be lost in the crowd. I would suggest that when a duplicate thread is created, find and post a link to one of the more popular threads on that topic.

I don't think so, but they may be getting new squires just to deal with all the spammers. You'd have to ask them.
