There was this talk on PBS about Lewis' life and the CoN books.
When Lewis was very young, his mother died. Lewis was(obviously) so sad about this he wanted to find a way to escape from it, so he made up a fantasy land(supposedly he found some kind of a "minaiture garden" made up of shrubbery, some green plants, and some clear green glass- this was what people said he based his fantasy world on).
When he started writing the LWW, Narnia reflected his imaginary land; in MN Digory's dying mother sort of symbolized how Lewis never got the chance to save his mother and how much he wanted her to get better- however, Lewis made it so that Digory was able to save his mother.
Also, Lewis' books reflected his Christian morals and ideas.
Hope this helps!!!

Also when he was younger he created a place called Animal Land. That could have something to do with Narnia because of all the animals in it :).

Lucy is based off a girl who stayed with the Lewis's during the war, as an evacuee. She left but came back to help despite personal issues conflicting with her being there. the young woman left a mark on Lewis's memory and she is brought to life in Lucy's character. Contrary to popular belief the girl was not actually Lucy Barfield.
