Hello, world!

***** SPOILER WARNING *****
This message makes mention of things that happen both in the movie and in several of the other books.
***** SPOILER WARNING *****

Just found this forum after seeing the movie. (I had been deliberately avoiding Narnia fandom prior to the movie to avoid any possible spoilers/etc.) I liked the movie. I've been browsing here and elsewhere to read what people are saying. I've seen book-vs-movie comparisons, and lists of goofs (internal inconsistencies in the film). How about some talk about some of the smaller but nice touches in the film? Some might call these "easter eggs".

(Please, I'd like to avoid nit-picking the book/movie differences in this particular thread, and limit it to the little things we liked, but others might miss. I tend to be rather picky myself, and have my list for the movie, but such discussions will tend to overwhelm the nice touches.)

Lots of people have pointed out the golden apple tobacco holder on Professor Digory Kirke's desk, which is clearly a reference to The Magician's Nephew.

Did you notice how the lamp-post is missing one of the metal cross-spars, as described in The Magician's Nephew? A lot of the visualizations I've seen miss that little detail.

The wardrobe is carved with imagery from the books. Lion's heads in the top corners. The golden apple tree in the center (TMN again). The rising sun over ocean (Dawn Treader) at the bottom. There's some other stuff that I couldn't quite make out. Anyone else get a better look at it?

Something I haven't seen mention of anywhere yet: In an early scene, when the children are rushing out of one of their rooms at the Kirke house, I briefly saw a framed painting hanging on the wall, to the right of the door. The painting was of a sailing ship on the water. Given the events in The Dawn Treader, I suspect that has to be deliberate.

What else did people spot?

Wow! Those are really detailed observations, and I admit that I will have to watch the movie again (I'm going tonight, ya! :p ) to be able to make really good observations like that. But I'm sure I'll get back to ya!

Yes, I saw all of the things listed. It really is a great book series. One thing I wish that they would've done, was to make it in chronilogical order. It would explain a lot of things that happened in the film. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the most famous one of them all, however. If this rumor is true, and remember, it is ONLY a rumor, is that the Horse and His Boy is next. If it is true, that would be absolutly horrible, wouldn't it?

Yes, that would be sad, but I do hope that they do the books in the "old" order... LWW, PC, VDT, SC, HAHB, MN, and LB. It makes the stories so much more interesting and mysterious and it's fun to have all your answeres answered later... you're like "OOOOH!!! :D " Plus that's the way that C.S. Lewis wrote the books.

Reading order (or viewing order, for movies) is a long-standing debate in Narnia fandom. Google for "Narnia reading order" to see many essays and debates. I highly doubt we're going to resolve that issue here, and as I said, I'd like to keep this thread off the topic of "They should have..." and on the topic of "Did you see...?".

To that end, here's something I just read in another forum: Remember Edmund drawing on the face of a stone lion? It's been reported that, at the end, in the crowd at the coronation, you can see a lion with a mustache, wearing glasses! I'm gonna have to keep an eye peeled for that.

you can see that, its highly entertaining. I enjoyed several little moments. One was when the professor gives a start at hearing about lucy finding Narnia in the wardrobe specifically. Nice setup for when MN tells us that it was the old apple tree that the wardrobe was made out of. I also liked how they did each child entering the wardrobe. Most people probably wouldn't notice a difference between who closes the door and who leaves it open a crack. But Lewis heavily emphasized this in the book to show Edmund's foolishness. I was glad that stayed in.

There is a very brief scene, where the children are leaving on the train, in a reflection, you can see the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) insignia on something... Anybody know if this is a blunder, or was intentionally done, and if so, what it symbolizes? Thanks!

there is a picture of the wardrobe in the movie companion guide. on it there is:
the rings (top-right corner)
the Wood between the Worlds (directly below it, on the right-hand side)
Charn (directly below that, on the right-hand side)
the golden bell (directly below, bottom-right corner)
the first sunrise (center bottom)
Fledge, the winged horse (bottom-left corner)
the garden on top of the hill (above that, left-hand side)
the bird in the tree (above that, left-hand side)
the apple (above that, upper-left)
two crowns (top center)
the apple tree (center)
(y'all know what those symbolize) ;)
there is also a queen person sitting on a throne (who i take to be jadis, when she was in charn?) at the sides of the wardrobe, like the aslans on top of the pillars.

and, on another note: did it look like aslan had some kind of mark on his forehead in the movie? it especially stood out then the kids first arrived at aslan's camp. i kept thinking (if it was a mark) that it was from jadis when she threw that pole, huh?

I just saw LWW again on DVD, and I noticed the pictures on the DVD case wardrobe. I recognized some of them, but there were some I wasn't sure about. Glad to see the explanations on those! As for the movie itself, I was really glad to see the stuff w/ the Professor was kept in, b/c that sort of helps set up MN.

***Spoiler for those who have not read The Last Battle***

When the children are following Mr. Beaver (to his dam I believe) he turns around and tells the kids "further up" which is the same phrase that they reapeated on their journey to the true Narnia at the end of LB. I don't know if this was an intentional reference or not, but it was very cool.

It was "further in" when he finds them in the woods. I nociced that too. I think the phrase was used somewhere else too.

Another small thing that I noticed was when Lucy was talking with Tumnus for the first time and he asked "Are you a daughter of Eve?", Lucy replied with "My mother's name is Helen". I was wondering if this might be a reference to Queen Helen from Magian's Nephew. If not, it's an awfully big coincedence.

Yes in the last battle the command is 'further up and further in'

I also loved the little bits of detail. When Lucy first sees the wardrobe, it specifically mentions in the book that all there is in the room other than it is a dead bluebottle on the window. In the film, lucy's gaze and then the camera shift to the window where you see the blue bottle as it dies. Brilliant!!! I lvoe little things like that!

There's one subtle scene that has a really sweet back-story. In the movie, when Edmund is telling the others why they have to stay in Narnia, Lucy reaches out her hand and takes his. That was actually not in the original script: Georgie came up with it completely on her own, while rehearsing the scene with a prospective Edmund (not Skandar). Adamson thought that it was exactly what Lucy would be expected to do in that situation, so he wrote it in.

Well, actually, the Dawn Treader's story didn't appear in the wardrobe. It was the complete story (or almost complete story) of the Magician's Nephew. It explains in the Illustrated Movie Companion.

That doesn't mean that they didn't have a Dawn-Treader-type picture in the Professor's house. I mean, in Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame", they threw in Belle, Pumbaa, and the carpet from "Aladdin".

BTW, Adamson's story of the hand-holding incident is a bit different from the one given by Perry Moore (Exec. producer and writer of the official Narnia movie companion). But his memory of it is a bit sketchy, since he thought it took place with Skandar.
