I wasn't sure where to put this, so I thought I'd try here. I need some ideas for names of Centuars for a fanfic I'm writing. All I can come up with is Glenstorm, and as we all know that is taken by an already existing character... I know there are more in CoN and I can't seem to come up with any unique ones.

Any ideas? come on peeps be creative now!

gee...I'm not sure. the only one I thought of was Roonwit, but he's also in CoN. sorry! if I think of any, I'll come and tell you.

When I need to come up with names for something I'm writing, I just look around the room for a word or a name written somewhere, and spell it backwards or mix up the letters or something. Hence, a character named Ognat ('tango' backwards) and a water-godess named Cerin (from Eucerin, a skin moisturizing cream that happened to be sitting next to my computer)

Bane is awesome but it's in HP so i dunno if that helps. Herb or tree names are cool too. Like Rowan or Rue or something like that.

Hmm... I'll have to think about this one. I would say just read up on centaur names and see what it is they have in common.
The only centaurs I've run into so far are in Harry Potter and CoN, and some of the HP ones are Magorian, Firenze, and Ronan. One thing I've noticed is that they ALL (in both HP and CoN) have R's and N's (with the exception of Bane, whose name has no R) as major consonants and most have O's for vowels. Also, Glenstorm's name is really just a compound of two nouns from nature: glen + storm. Sooo... names like Fornrill, Roodwin (that one sounds like a female name...), Rivendorn, Moorgall, Bernmont, etc. Hope this helps, haha.

lol, the name of the capital city in my sci fi series in called "Cerin City." I just thought off the top of my head, "hmmm, Cerin sounds interesting." That's how I come up with most (but not all) of my sci-fi names.

I do some word combinations like "Merliber" is the name of my villain. Name coming from "Merlin" and "Excaliber." Then I did the same thing with the same to words to come up with the name "Excalin."

You can also use common words and spell them differently, like Figg, Branche, Wottr, Rocke, Kartune (lol), etc.

Another great thing to do is pop in a movie and look at the end credits. Some names may pop out to you. There are a LOT there, from producers to animators to key grips.

Words in other languages are good sometimes: Manene, Kapanapana, Karanga, and Atarua, are all words in different Maori (New Zealand native) songs. I happened to have a Maori cd nearby, so there are some of those words. Norweigen names (taken from an Edvard Grieg cd I have) make very nice fantasy names: Anitra, AƤse, Peer, Henrik, Rikard, Borghild (I use several of those names in my stories).

Anyway, here are some more "off the top of the head" names which is fun for fantasy or sci-fi in my opinion (I love doing this):

Mankinan, Baronin, Farsong, Oakhaven, Pransettin, Andsari, Kinta, Minkan, Kartano, Barroot, Trueseer, Landrun, Pierce, Parhoof, Redtraven, Sandtread, Glazetrot, Raeglow, Orenprenseti, Kaphlan, Ishtan, Adaskan, Kinmalae, Lantis, Goalinn, Horan, Yanoran, Quillin, Krillan.

Maybe one of those words can spark an idea, or you can take one of those names. Heh, I may use one or two of those names...

aahhh, Dragon that was a great list. thanks

I have thought of using a greek word for the name of this character, as it is from the greek mythology that centuars arose. Its a minor character, but its been driving me crazy as I cannot come up with a name.

on a side note, I am loving writing this story. I can't wait to share it with you. My biggest problem now is finding a title for it. My brother is no help, he keeps giving me these cliche names like "The Lost Chronicle" "An Untold Story" ... pretty sad. At this rate I'm probably going to post my story with the title "Untitled" since I am at such a loss for an appropriate title. sigh... the pains of being a writer.

lol, I am so in agreement with you about titles. Character names sometimes give me trouble, and I have changed several main characters' names even after hundreds of pages of writing, but I'm still not satisfied with all of my titles.

Good idea going Greek. May even be able to go into searches on the net for Greek namse.

Hey sorry if this is random but are most people on here writers? I write poems mostly but am working on a story that's been in my head for a while...

I think its quite uncanny. I'm a writer, I specialize in play-writing, but I long to write and publish novel length fiction. Maybe its a narnia thing. Or maybe its just this site?

EDITED to ADD
you can also tell a writer by the fact they have poor grammer and spelling, like me. see thats what editors are for. :P

Continuing off topic discussion of writers...

I'd been struggling to get a story out of my head for three years when I found a trial program called "Sophocles," a screenwriting software. It was really helpful for me in creating, organizing, plotting out and writing my stories. Now I have over 450 pages of screenplay written on my sci-fi/fantasy series.

Basically the trial will do everything the full program will do (with no time limits) ....except for print or copy/paste to other word processing programs. So it's just stuck on your computer unless you register it, which I did. Registering is $120 unless you're a student: then it's $60 if I remember right. I might be off. Fortunately, I'm a student. :-)

It's been really helpful for a budding screenwriter like myself.
So there's my writer's testimony. I no you didn't ask, but there it is.

OK, what was the topic again? Oh yeah! Centaur names.
I refuse to post on this thread anymore unless I offer at least one name suggestion. lol

Let's see... Mossfoot.
OK, that may be lame, but it's something.
