View Full Version : Ramandu's Daughter should get a name

Tsukiko
02-06-2007, 01:39 PM
I think when they film Voyage of the Dawn Treader, they should give Ramandu's Daughter an actual name. Lewis never gave her one..which..I see..kinda dumb.

But it would not RUIN THE MOVIE....she's not really a major character anyways.

Ginny_JillPole
02-08-2007, 05:09 PM
Yeah, me too... I mean, Caspian won't call say something like...
"UH..." with a dumb voice walking toward her "Hello, Ramandu's daughter... umm..."
But it has to be a good name. An unexpected one.
Good idea, I agree totally with you.

LadyAnneOfNarnia

Are you sure she didn't have a name in Silver Chair?

inkspot

I don't think she ever has a name. How 'bout Nova? That's a kind of star ...

Tsukiko
02-09-2007, 02:51 PM
No, she doesnt have a name at all.

Nova sounds alright.

PrinceOfTheWest
02-09-2007, 02:57 PM
Actually, a nova is the abrupt explosion of a star. I don't think anyone would want to call her Nova, anymore than anyone would want to call their son "Eruption".

Lucifer ("light-bearer") might be nice, but that's already taken, and with negative connotations at that. Diluxor is a crude attempt at "dawn-wife" in Latin, but it sounds odd to our ears - too much like "deluxe" (which she certainly was, but it sounds more like something you'd say about a washing machine.)

Tsukiko
02-09-2007, 02:59 PM
Diluxor

Thats kool. :D

But if they do happen to give her name, which, I have a feeling they may, it better be a good one. Though not much of a main charatcer in the Chronicles, she was pretty kool.

LadyAnneOfNarnia
02-09-2007, 05:20 PM
Yeah. I can't think of a good name off the top of my head. But I wouldn't be bothered if they named her. But my sister made a good point that it kind of made her more mysterious and beautiful not having a name at all. If that makes any sense to anyone but me. :D

inkspot
02-09-2007, 05:40 PM
How bout Stella then, that's some corruption of a star word, stellar. But it's not very pretty. Or Selena is something to do with the moon -- if only it weren't already taken by a dead singer. Lyra is the name of a star in the sky; how bout that? And Alcyone is the name of a star ... That's kind of nice.

LadyAnneOfNarnia
02-09-2007, 05:46 PM
Ooh! ooh! ooh! Those are all nice!

Danica means Morning Star

Hespera means Evening Star (although I'm not sure about this one)

Seina means Star and Nara
and
Seren means Star too.

Ooh!
Chantrea means Light of the Moon. The pronounciation is technically CHAN-thee-a but I think it sounds even better if you pronounce it Shan-tray-uh.

Dernhelm
11-22-2008, 09:51 PM
Coriakin and Ramandu are the only named stars in the CoN, I believe. Neither is all the 'star-like', really... but both have three syllables, and are just slightly foreign sounding.

Here are my ideas. :D

Nelennan
Maeve (Perhaps too much connection with Irish mythology?)
Ahmahaia

(Letters in bold are just the ones that seemed to work a couple different ways--ie., I couldn't decide. :p Names are such fun.)

Isis is too well known as an Egyptian name,
Esther is too well known as a Hebrew name,
Sidra and Sitra are too obvious as middle eastern names.
I think the name should be something that practically no one will recognize.

Nelennan sounds too much like melanin.

Maeve is definately too Irish

I do like Ahmahaia, though.

I also think that it would be a good idea to make sure that the name sounds good with "Queen" in front of it.

I like the name Dione. I actually thought of that as a middle name for a future potential daughter--Medea Dione.

It shouldn't be too obviously connected to the word star like Stella or Astra and I would hope they go a little more exotic than a common English name. I think they could actually go without naming her, just referring her or calling her such titles as Princess or other royal titles, or you, she and other pronouns.

"what does Medea mean?"

dayhawk, Medea is another Greek Mythology name. She was Jason's wife (Jason and the Argonauts). Not exactly the picture of a great family woman as she killed her brother to allow Jason to get away from her father. She also killed their children to get back at Jason after he left her for a princess.

I know, she is not an ideal figure, but I do love that name.

You know, IF the subject of her name comes up, ie as they leave Caspian says something to the effect of, " I do not believe I even know your name..."
They could just have Ramadnu's daughter respond in a fashion similar to Spock in the Original Star Trek series when asked what his last name was. His response was, " I do not believe you could pronounce it."

However in the case of R's daughter it would be less of it being unpronouncable, and more of it being, " To wonderful a name for even the strongest of mortal ears to hear."

But if a scene were filmed in which we saw Ramandu joining his daughter for breakfast, it would be ridiculous for him to say, "Good morning, Ramandu's Daughter." I am positive that, if the daughter had been going to have more "onstage" time, Lewis would have given her a name.

Glenburne
01-31-2010, 06:04 PM
I guess, if her father was present in all her scenes, he could just call her "Daughter"--some men do that. But if there are any scenes of her talking privately with Caspian, a name might become necessary (depending on how they structure the scenes). Caspian can't very well get away with calling her "Daughter."

Yes that would sound really weird. But I do have a really pretty name I use for her. It's Ivaylo.
It mean's wolf,but who cares!
In my fanfic's she's my character's sister and she can transform into a wolf so that's why i used it.

There's a campain going on on Narnia FanFic Revolution for them to name RD "Caulitha", which means something like "of the stars" (For those not farmiliar to fanfic, Caulitha is the name of RD in one of the best fanfics on the web, The Changing of the Constellations) I think that might be cool, and get fanfic some recognition, but Lewis never gave her a name and I don't really see the need for her to have one, unless they spend alot of time on her which I seriously hope they don't. My greatest fear is that they'll give her something totally lame like "Starr" or "Moon", or else something that sounds more like a hippie than an acual daughter of a Narnian star.

Sven-El

or My Dear.

For that matter, Rillian could easily just call her "mother." After all, unless he is Eustace Clarence Scrubb who calls his parents Harold and Alberta most children call their parents "father", and "mother." or some form of it.

So I agree there could be a way around it and make her feel like she's actually an important character. ( perhaps if they get to Silver Chair add a breif throw away line of, "His majesty was so greived by her death that he ordered no one speak her name, less it rend his heart once again.")

But on a silly note.. her name could be Moon Unit!:D

I guess I just don't understand people's reasoning! I think it's neat for her not to have a name for several reasons. First, that's the way Lewis designed things-Ramandu's daughter is in two books, yet nameless. Obviously that's Lewis' intention. Also, I think it would be a disrespectful little bit of a slap in the face to Lewis to name her anything and would diffuse the mystery surrounding this lovely woman.

Narniamoondust

(Because Ivaylo is Tigerlily's sis and Caspian can't shmooze around her!)
Besides my caspian is way too faithfull...hmmm.
Sorry, don't mean to clog up the thread. Just thinking to myself.....:o

"I don't quite get the question."

NMD, Copper as just asking how you pronounced the name Ivaylo.

Is it {ee-vail-o} or {ee-vile-o}

I guess, if her father was present in all her scenes, he could just call her "Daughter"--some men do that. But if there are any scenes of her talking privately with Caspian, a name might become necessary (depending on how they structure the scenes). Caspian can't very well get away with calling her "Daughter."

No, but he could call her "wife" but I'm sure he would tire of having a nameless wife. Narnians could call her "the Queen", but that doesn't have the same sort of regal ring to it that names have.

It is wonderful and mysterious to have her nameless during that initial scene where Caspian, Lucy and Edmund initially meet her. It does add to her beauty and allure. But, after the awe and mystery have passed and she becomes a real person, she does deserve a name because being nameless is only interesting if you don't know her. She becomes Caspian's wife and a great Queen of Narnia - its only right she has a name, because I think we all would like to get to know her a little better.

I looked up a few names...going with the "a" theme:

Aysel - "moonlight"
Arella - "angel, messenger"
Ariella - "Lioness of God" (which wouldn't work because Ariel is too much like the mermaid, but Lioness has Narnian conotations :D)
Andalee - "nightinggale"
Amara - "eternally beautiful, paradise"
Amira - "princess, ruler"
Alena - "russian form of Helena" (the first Queen of Narnia was called Helen)

Some others:
Celena, Celeste: "heavenly", Callista "most beautiful", Dolunay "full moon" Kamaria "like the moon", Leorah "light to me", Levana "moon", Oralee "my light", Rya "to dream, Sahira "earth moon, spring that flows"

I was looking at the cast of Dawn Treader online and I didn't see Ramandu. I even googled it. If he isn't in the film it stands to reason that RD would have to get a name because we can't refer to her by her parentage as was done in the book.
