I am so mad about the BBC's version of the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe! I have been watching it since I was born. I know the whole script! LOL. Anyone mad about it as much as me? :)

Sophie Wilcox is a brilliant actress - she did it very well. But, I must admit, she didnt fit the part well 'visually' shall we say. :D

I don't think Susan was a very good actress. She was a bit too gentle!!LOL

Very true, and Edmund was a bit wooden - and Peter was a bit smarmy - Lucy was def the best of the lot.

It was better than the animated version. Aslan looked bad. The fawn looked good and I liked the Lamp post. I liked the Silver Chair and Jill and Puddleglum. I had hoped The BBc would have continued the series. I am worried that the Disney series will end after they get to the Silver Chair again and they won't make HHB which is my favorite CON story next to LWW. :D

I was on a different forum and someone said that they were Wonder Works films, not BBC. Is BBC a parent company with WW as a subcompany? I do remember the WW logo with the hotair baloon.

waterhogboy
10-27-2005, 06:51 PM
Hmmmm... if you're thinking of the live action, poorly produced, cardboard baddies one - that was definitely BBC, although WW may have helped in production....... However, there are other versions such as an animated one I've never seen - and I think there's even another one that some peeps on the site have watched.

It says on the back oc my DVD set "1988, 1990 British Broadcasting Corporation all rights reserved. A BBC television production in association with Wonder Works. Distributed under licence from BBC Worldwide America, Inc." Sound like it is the BBC to me :). And it says BBC in square white boxes in the front, back and side of the DVD box.

Hey Waterhogboy,

I'm very curious....I've never seen the BBC versions, and I've heard that there are added scenes that aren't in the books.

If you have the time, it would be great if you (or anyone else reading this thread) added information on the differences between the books and the BBC versions to the complete Narnia database that we're building:

Thanks!

I liked the cast they had for the BBC ones aswell, i enjoyed the Caspian for young and old.
I liked how they did the dwarves and what not but when they did the dryads in LWW( the ladies at Aslans camp) they always made me laugh, and Reepichep they did for the BBC's.
Here is a pic i found, its nice with the cast.
I also found the Lucy they had kinda.....funny lol sorry :p

I didn't realise how much of a cult classic these BBC films were in Britain man!!

Whoever I talk to, whether they like teen-pop and chick flicks, or gory horrors and emo or prefer a good book and a bit of classical, or are more into their sports - they've all seen these - and liked em!!! Its amazing!!

Well, those books were faithful to the movie, they didn't leave anything essential out. When crap like the Harry Potter misinterpretations is coming out of theaters these days, one shouldn't wonder. I loved those movies, too. I hope the new ones aren't bad.

i love them too ! YAY!
allthough i DID NOT love Prince Caspian,in my view it went far off from the book nd the actors all seemed to be having their 'bad acting day' the whole time. only Lucy and Aslan gave any light ,and even they weren't at their best!

But I absolutelly adore the Silver Chair BBC video! it's so... real! they did a brilliant job , even with the MINISCULE budget! It really helped me visualise the two children ( realise how wrong that sounds and i do not wish to put down C.S.Lewis) . they also did a pretty good job of the Dawn Treader. the actual ship was great. also Prince Caspian was pretty good (actuelly VERY good.)
sorry this is so long.

Yes i was very happy with that part of the BBc's. Following the book very closeley was superbly done in the BBC's.

Like in the animated were a few changes and what not, but i didnt mind its my fave LWW of the old versions so far.

I seen the BBC live ones. The lion, the witch, and the wardrobe(When I was in 5th grade), then I rewatched it about 2 years ago, then took out the Silver Chair, Voyage of Dawn treader. I loved both. They only had the three at library I lived near so I only got to see those three. I keep looking for them though.

When I was younger I used to read the books and then came the bbc version and it was like wow. I was disapointed in the film because i had seen the bbc version first. I know the first paragraph

:D Once there were four children whose names were perter, susan edmund and lucy. They were sent away from london during the war because of the air raids. They were sent to the house of an old professor who lived in the heart of the country, 10 miles away from the nearest railway station and two miles from the nearest post office. :D

Yes thats sad but guess what I Dont Care!

Peter was nice in those films!

According to my mom I would ask her to rent these every other week. But I haven't watched them fully since I was about 6, so just about 12 years. Though my friend owns them on DVD and we plan on watching them soon. I watched a little bit of Dawn Treader last week and I laughed so hard when I saw Reepicheep. Still the BBC versions are loyal to the books and nothing makes me happier than when a movie stays true to the book.

The BBC are very utmost loyal the The Chronicles that they did make into a movie.

I laughed aswell with some of the costumes especially in VDT Reep looked absoutely hilarious! And there clothes made me laugh also :D :p

But they were very good with following the books, i would have liked to see them make The Horse and His Boy that would make me laugh so hard. Lol
Does anyone know why they stopped at The Silver Chair?
I havent seen the BBC version of The Silver Chair, I have only seen The Lion the witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the DawnTreader, i hopefully will see the Silver Chair soon enought i really laugh b/c i saw how they did Puddleglum for it heee heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee:)lol

When we stop to consider how technology was during the days that the BBC version of the four books was made, then I cannot help but be impressed with how far we have come since and what compromises were made back when it was created. Computer technologies are completely amazing in this day and age, and when we actually look at the copyright dates of the BBC version, then I cannot understand why people say 'this stuff is cheesy'. Imagine being a director and having to work with certain limitations put on you, and then having to work with said limits, and finally seeing the differences between the two and thinking wow! Try to imagine how things will be in 30 years, we probably won't need actors anymore, they will probably have a way to computer generate everything. But, I remember when all these things first came out, and how in the 1970's when I was a kid, there were no cell phones, computers, vcrs, and microwave ovens. The things that were created for movies were either live action or animation, nothing in between. There was no 'Toy Story' or 'Incredibles' to compare things to, and the whole idea of computer generation seemed to emerge from reruns of 'Star Trek'.

Last week I looked at the BBC's version of LWW, then yesterday, I sat in the movie theater and watched the newer one, then last night I watched 'Prince Caspian' and 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader', and was completely blown away with the extent of the changes between the older version of LWW and VDT. It was night and day, and when we consider how it was back when it was made, then I find myself not being overly critical of the older version, but being impressed with the sheer inginuity that shows itself in these particular films. These folks were going with what they had, and if it meant people walking around in Beaver suits, then fine, they were at least able to convey the ideas they intended through these means. Some of us reading here were around before VCRs and Microwave ovens came to be, and when I think about how far we have come since then, I'm completely amazed by the sheer magnitude of the fantasy that has taken hold of our entertainment mediums.

I grew up with the BBC Lion, Witch, & Wardrobe. I never knew there were other movies (Caspian, VoDawn Treader) until about two weeks ago....kinda funny actually. But I loved the BBC version. Actually, I was hesitant about seeing the new "Chronicles" becasue I thought they wouldn't stick to the book, like many Hollywood interpretations are. I'm so glad I went, though! I would like to watch our VERY old BBC tape again (we actually ahve a two part!) and see what it was like again. I remember all the actors and all the Animals were humans in costumes...except Aslan...but I watched it recently. It is astounding how much technology and acting, and costuming, sets, special effects have lifted since then!

The BBC version is more faithful to the plot and text of LWW. THe film shifts the centre of gravity (fatally, in my view) onto the "will we be heroes?" question, which simply plays no part whatsoever in the original book.

I have the old 1988 version of LWW on video--before the newer version came out, I watched it again--hadn't watched it in years---I still love it, and though that Aslan can't compare to the new one I still love him---of course the battle scene in the older version is well, rather pitiful compared to the new one, and I don't particularly care for the actress who portrayed the witch in the older version--still,,, do love it

Cheesy? Whaaaaaat?

Okay, granted, they are a little cheesy at times. Remember though, that these were made 15 years ago and the technology and funding to make effective modern movies did not exist back then.

Personally I love the old series. I think they hold such a Narnian charm for me, that was just completely missing in the new movie. The BBC Pevensie children were all decent enough actors, and I loved Jonathon R Scott's smarmy, spiteful portrayal of Edmund. Sophie Wilcox was a little whiney as Lucy, but she was a good actor and was essentially (in nature at least) what Lucy was supposed to be. Richard Dempsey as Peter was great; pomous in a way, very regal in his bearing and speech and without doubt the leader of the four children. Sophie Cook wasn't as strong in her performance, but she was playing Susan as Susan is written in the books; she was meant to be gentle and placating, not argumentative and "logical".

Barbara Kellerman who played The White Witch was pantomimic in her portrayal, over-bearing and overly dramatic, but at least there was a real menace there; she was always threatening and dangerous. It was also a nice touch that it was the same actress who continued to pop up as the evil figure in every production after that; Prince Caspian, VotDT and Silver Chair, signifying that it was the essence of the same White Witch only manifested into different forms.

As for the setting... I loved it, because it was actually Britain! Narnia always had a British feel to it, so I was very disappointed when they announced that they'd be filming the new Narnia movie in New Zealand. Narnia was British, not Middle-Earth-ish. The snow scenes in BBC Narnia were all filmed in Scotland, and they looked so authentic and freezing cold. The trek to the stone table showed some beautiful country-side, and while the last battle was pretty dodgy and small-scale, at least it wasn't filmed on the Rohan fields.

Well, that's my two bob's worth.

ah the days of the BBC series I remember them well and was over the moon to find tha they had brought them out on Video now DVD. The part that always stuck in my mind were the children sitting on there thrones and the section that always made me blub :( was the scene at the stone table. I don't remember the silver chair with Tom Baker but i'm going to go buy it and it might jog my memory. The guy that played Peter was in a UK TV show not so long ago I wish I could remember what TV show it was..I think it was a period drama - I said to my Mam thats the guy from LWW BBC TV series she didn't seem that bothered LOL

I love the BBC series! They have them at my church's library, I remember getting them out when I was very young. I've watched the series over and over again. I thought Aslan was very well done, the technology clearly wasn't as advanced back then, so they had to use puppets, but in my mind, Aslan was very realistic.

She gets on my nerves..I personally think Georgie Henley did a much better job at portraying the spirit of Lucy.

Oh, I love the BBC versions! :p Particularly, the beautiful music in the beginning of each one and when it shows Aslan's face. I actually think that the BBC children did slightly better acting than the new kids(don't get me wrong, I also love the acting in the new movie). However, the new Narnia children do have the character of all their roles, which make them perfect for their part! But, yes, I always do get annoyed by the fat Lucy with the buck teeth in the BBC version of LWW even though she was a good actress.
Some of the effects are very cheesy, like the animated and costumed animals, but I still like the BBC versions because of the great acting and the magic of it all. I mean, I like it being all dark and snowy when Lucy enters through the wardrobe and when she sees the lamp-post it's one of the best moments on screen. All of the characters seemed very lovable, especially the BBC Mr.Tumnus. And I love the fact that they used a real lion to play Aslan, but it was awful when he tried to talk and his lips didn't match his words and all...So the BBC versions have its strengths and weaknesses. :)
If only they could combine all of the good qualities of both the BBC LWW movie and the Disney one, then that would be the best Narnia movie ever! :D

I agree with Narnia Fanatic. I like the BBC version better and I actually quite like the costume animals I think it makes them seem more magic and real cos it says in The Magicians Nephew that the talking animals got bigger and in the new one it just looked like a CGed beaver that talked. When I found out about 'The Beaver Retrivers' that made me laugh. I also love the intro. I still find myself whistling it absent mindedly. Also the BBC version stuck to the storyline whereas the film had the river bit which doesn't happen. Aww bless lil Lucy she's only 8.

The effects may not be as good, but I love it over the new film, because it gives me good memories. I've got the animated one, but it's not as good, it's okay I suppose, but the Witch looks really stupid. It made me laugh and they rename Maugrim, Fenris Olf. The only good thing aside from sticking to the storyline about it is Lucy's hair is ACTUALLY BLONDE!!! They have haven't managed to do that with Sophie Wilcox or Georgie Henley in either of the films.

Sophie Wilcox never used to annoy me even though people say she was fat. She's really good and on the interviews she sounds really sad that she was 'the fat Lucy with the buck teeth.'

Still anyway I think BBC is better even though William Moseley is cute ^_^

Well God Bless

OMG I JUST SAW THE BBC LWW!!!!!!!! It was good, but soooo much different than the Disney-Walden Media one b/c the tech. is so much more advanced!!!!!! the aslan was a bit wierd... .:) so was "Lucy".
How come all the "Susan"s are pretty????!!!!!!!

also, do they (the BBC version makers) use the books as the scripts? i recognized nearly every line in it from the book!

I think the bbc, realising that millions of super fans would watch such a classic they couldn't mess about with things too much, other 'Points of View' (very famous TV complaints programme) would have been inundated!
The Beeb have a reputation for doing amazing adaptions, and LWW is such an example!

I don't think they are as good as the current one, but with the materials they had avaliable, they were very good.

I don't know what the BBC is. My mom thinks it's some kind of British company or something. I'm from Indiana in the USA.

The BBC is an Acronym and stands for "The British Broadcasting Centre"

It's the main Television Company in Britain.
It also has some radio stations.

You can find it's website here (www.bbc.co.uk).
