If you were asked by your teacher or boss to make a 5-minute presentation about something important to you, what would you choose for your topic? You would be making this presentation to 35 other people, most whom you do not know.

I would also be interested in knowing your educational level and country, please.

Thank you.

I'd probably do a presentation on my Christian faith, or a presentation on my family history, which is something I'm really proud of. :D

I'm a Senior in high school (12th grader) in the United States.

It'd be one of these three possibiliites: Narnia, Aslan, or what God's done for me in my life. I'm a Sophomore in High School, and just because of that doesn't mean I'm any less smarter than a person who has a degree.

Narborg,

I ask out of curiosity of culture. Some of my students had to do this kind of presentation. It is interesting to see how others think as to what would be a good subject.

Thank you for your input.

Aravis - are not Narnia and Aslan the same subject? And no, nobody is making any comment about you being in high school meaning you are smarter or less smart. Please stop thinking people are attacking you. (It makes you look weak.)

No, Narnia is more general while Aslan is more specific. That's why when I have to do a paper this year, I'm thinking of either narnia or Aslan. Narnia is basically exploring C.S. Lewis, the allegories, etc. while Aslan would be the specific character traits, what Lewis was doing through Aslan, that kind of thing.

Narnia and the importance of the symbolism in LWW.

I think a lot of narnia fans would talk about narnia and stuff. Susan P. why is your signature so long? Just curious.

It is so long because I needed to change it!

I would do a five minute presentation on how I became pro-life after years of advocating 'choice'. how Narnia and a special forum filled with wonderful members were able to help me regain my faith in Christianity after 23 years of unbelieving, and how my life began anew after a retreat called Rachel's Vineyard.

Aravis Kenobi

That would be something worth coming to and listening to!

:D I'd try to keep it at five minutes though...you know, when someone does a speech, a speech should be fairly short and concise, and makes people want to listen, not be boring.

I did dozens upon dozens of presentations while earning my bachelor's degree... so I know that hardly anything can be said in five minutes of time

But... I guess I would do it on the importance of language to human thought.

I'm in the USA, and I'm in the first year of my master's degree.

Yeah but in rhetoric and public speech classes they tell you to limit your speeches in those respective classes to under 5 minutes, and preferably less.

Oh I forgot to add about the educational level...I have three degrees...technically four...an AA in fashion design from junior college, I then attended Mills College, a private college for women in Oakland, California, for two years, then switched to San Jose State University and got three degrees in exercise physiology, history, and philosiphy, and minors in art history, psychology, and sociology for each degree. So I was in school for quite some time.

The best learning experiences and information though come from LIFE itself, not a classroom. A lot of times I just felt so stifled in a classroom. I would fall asleep and dream I was somewhere else ;)

Thank you, all, for your input. It was very "enlightening" to me. It is interesting to see the difference in topics among cultures and educational levels.

If more would like to post on this, I would never turn that down, either.

If I were to do a presentation I would do it on American history(since I love history) or I would do it on Christianity.

That is, I would sound the alarm against the postmodernist denial of truth. People don't just deny this or that particular fact; they deny that there even IS any such thing as truth. ("It's an absolute truth that there are no absolute truths, and I know for certain that no one knows anything for certain!") I would make sure to mention Mr. Lewis' book "The Abolition Of Man," which with marvellous insight predicted the development of this evil trend.

I have a B.A. degree in History (a subject which greatly helped me to come to faith in Jesus), and most of the credits needed for a Master's in the Russian language. (The long sickness and death of my Mary cut short my university studies; and now, with Janalee to care for, I don't know if I'll ever get back and finish that M.A. curriculum.)

I want to major in history as well. This is sort of off topic but is it really difficult to get a B.A. in History?

I want to major in history as well. This is sort of off topic but is it really difficult to get a B.A. in History?I have a B.A. in history. I would say that it is not any harder than any other subject in which you can get a degree. The most challenging part is just writing all the hundreds of papers that you'll have to write... It also depends a lot on the university. Some schools are tougher than others.

That's cool Ephi and Cf! What do you do with a B.A. in history? What kind of jobs do you have?

You can go and be a lawyer, a teacher, or a librarian. I didn't get a history or philosiphy degree for practicality, however. I got those degrees because I simply loved the subjects.

Oh I didn't know you did that. That's cool. I wanted to major in history but my mom objects slightly because she says I won't be able to make a decent living off of it.

if not it would be on narnia!

I would present my story ideas, and perhaps read excerpts from works I have written that I am the most proud of. I might also display the jacket and chapter art I have done for my books, and detail how I got involved in writing and my plans for the future. Hopefully a few people present would be involved in writing and would help guide me in the right direction for presenting my work to a publishing company, or perhaps finding an agent.

I am a junior in high school.

Oh I didn't know you did that. That's cool. I wanted to major in history but my mom objects slightly because she says I won't be able to make a decent living off of it.You definitely can make a decent living off of it if you go on to law school or get your PHD or something like that. Teaching isn't too bad of a job. At least one of my friends that I graduated with who also had a degree in history is in law school at University of Kentucky now. I'm pretty sure that lawyers make a decent living.

My problem is that I'm still not sure exactly WHAT I want to do with my life. I enjoy being a student, and I like the job I have now... but it's still only a transitional stage. I want to be an archaelogist at some point, but I don't think I want to do that for like... the rest of my life. It's really frustrating, too, because people are always asking me what I am going to do with my degree. "Oh, you're going to be a teacher then, right? That's the only thing you can do with a history degree..." No, I don't really want to be a teacher, though I'm sure I may end up as one at some point. I would rather teach at the college level, though, than high school or below. But there are just so many things that I want to do that I just don't know...

Hmm, if it was for school or work it would be sharing my faith because most of the time when people find out I'm a Christian they're in shock. As several classmates have put it, "but you're so nice and normal." I'd like to explain what it truly means to be a Christian and why my faith is different from the people who stand in the quad screaming that people are going to hell.

If it was a 5 minute speech in front of my sunday school class or bible study I would want to explain (as well as possible) the difference between pagan and nonbeliever. I really hate that a lot of Christians refer to nonbelievers as pagans when paganism is an actual religion. (that's the wrong word but i don't think cult fits paganism either.)
If I had more time I would go into the differences between old paganism and new. But I just don't like that there is a lot of good in the old pagan stories and traditions that gets ignored. (many have prophecies of Jesus in them and good grief, every Christian holiday derived itself from a pagan festival) As GK Chesterton said; “Paganism was the biggest thing in the world, and Christianity was bigger and everything since has been comparatively small.” Seems like we might want to know a little more about what it really is especially in today's culture where fantasy is so big and where the ideals of paganism permeate most of the world. (sorry to go on so long...can you tell its a major peeve?)

oh, almost forgot, you're looking at the rants of a soon to be college graduate (with bachelors in medieval british literature) who will be getting her doctorate in celtic literature, specifically from the time around the transition from pagan to christian. hence the interest.
