So how big of a Geek are you? What are your obsessions?

I am rather obsessed with lotr, well collecting the merchandise that is. It's become a hobby for me. I love the books and the movies, maybe a little to much. I collect the action figures, I have like 11 posters, tons of lotr related books, bookends, ect. I also love star wars, although, the merchandise obsession isn't as bad as with lotr. I also love books! I buy them all the time, there everywhere in my room. My two favorite movies ,or series I should say, are lotr and star wars. I love to read! I would say I am a big, big geek! :D

[Edit]: not to mention I love the narnia series, my fave band is Hanson (if that doesn't make me a Geek nothing can), and I met my best friends on a star wars message board! :D :P
I also love movies!!!!!

I would also like to note that being a geek is not a bad thing! Its just enjoying things in a way that is a bit odd to some people. If your a geek your probably just being yourself because most people geek out over one thing or another. :)

My obsessions of choice are Narnia, Myst, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Iron Chef, and anything and everything bats. I'm also a budding Inuyasha fan, though I'm not nearly a full demon yet--I mean full Inuyasha nerd! Yeah, yeah, that's what I meant...

I am not a geek. I am a Karchanian. Anyways, I like a bunch of stuff... sharp, dangerous weapons among other things. I have a collection of daggers that is slowly growing in porportion to my very small budget. I usually go without food for two weeks whenever I buy a new weapon. I'd like to get some hairpin daggers, but I haven't been able to find any that I like anywhere. I'd also like a bodice-dagger... but I haven't been able to get a decently priced and attractive one of those either. Let me know if you all ever see one! :D

well i'm assuming this is supposed to be about stuff other than narnia...so i muist say i am huge BEATLE/ PAUL MCCARTNEY geek. lol it made me laugh whoever said they met their friends on a star wars m/b because i met my best friends on a beatles m/b...actually i'm such a big geek that it wasn't even a beatle m/b so much as it was a beatle TRIBUTE BAND m/b! I used to watch this tribute band all the freakin time (back when i lived close to where they played) and would hunt out seats all day long if need be even when they played at disneyland...like i couldn't find anything better to do at disneyland than sit at a stage until like 7 or 8 pm. that being said i'm also a disney geek...my room at my whole house was painted by my mother and myself and had a "border" w/ over a hundred disney characters on it all the way around my room. i owned an annual pass for disneyland for 3 years and then worked there as my first job when i was 17...come to think of it i've met my other best friends all at disneyland......

I can't help but laugh at myself. I've managed to get in the habit of pulling the ice scoop out of its little metal case in such a way that it sounds like one sword glancing off of another, and I can make it sound like it's a sword being drawn. By the way, the ice scoop I refer to is the one at work (Sonic).

I'm not rather obsessed with LotR than Narnia, but that is because I came know the books just a little time ago (but when I come to think of it... I sometimes startle when I see the picture of lion, does that count too?). I am really that obsessed that my RPG characters come to life all by themselves... it's a little bit frightening but also very practical because you always have someone to talk to on a long, dull afternoon. Anyway, you never knew how embarrassed you could feel unless you are saying aloud the things you think your alter egos are saying or singing. Really QUITE embarressed. Another point is, that I'm looking for hair on my feet. I never found one, but at least I got hobbit stature and appetite. Yay me!

My second obsession is with h2g2. I ended up looking out for pink, insect-like starships to beam me up from school and having a 'wash-o-bag' instead of a pencase because it is neon yellow. Oh, and I'm still looking for a way to become a SEP. You wouldn't believe how much of your troubles would simply vanish if the only chance for you to be seen is the one looking for you hopping around on one leg.

Sometimes I'm also hugely obsessed with dragons. Sometimes I truly think I had to swish my tail out of the way before I take a seat. You don't have to be mad to survive, but it's helping.

I'm a pretty big geek but i didn't vote huge because i'm not one of those geeks that it's obvious right away...
i'm absolutely obsessed with history. i'll learn all sorts of ridiculous facts about our important people, culture, music, literature, government and wars and other countries' governments, wars, cultures, traditions, religions, music, literature, important people, etc., that no one really wants to know except me.
i'm also a geek when it comes to the Bible: I'll win Bible trivia every time... well, maybe not every time, but most...
and of course i'm a geek when it comes to LOTR (THE BOOKS!) and last but not least, old fantasy cartoon series like The Gnome and Lady Lovelylocks (why don't they release THOSE on DVD, huh?)

Dragon

I confess. I'm a Stargate geek. In short, I have in my house every episode of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis that has ever aired (over 150 episodes). SG-1 seasons 1-6 on dvd, and the rest on the computer. Geeky enough?

I am a retired StarWars geek (since I converted to Stargate, lol).

I'd also say I'm pretty geeky when it comes to films by Alfred Hitchcock or possibly M. Night Shyamalan.

I'm also a Monkey Island geek. Monkey Island's an old adventure game put out by lucasarts back in the early '90s. Check it out if you've never heard of it. Funny stuff.

My Narnia geekiness is new and not quite there yet. Not very good at the trivia games for it yet.

I've enjoyed reading and watching Lord of the Rings several times, but I would not say I'm a LotR geek as much as Narnia.

Does anyone else feel the need to behave a bit like a sponge and absorb as much as they can about everything - Pratchet etc?

You sound like a smart person *grimaces* unlike me who has no idea what you're talking about :D oh well. My obsessions are as follows

~Lord of the Rings, big big fan. Went to the midnight showing of RotK with my Aragorn shirt. Didn't have enough time to make a costume. Started learning elvish. Covered my closet walls with pictures of LotRs actors that I'd cut out of magazines. I still make collages with the pictures I have left but I'm running out of them. Check Theonering.net nearly every day just to see the news. Read long boring essays about good and evil in ME (only I don't find them boring *wink*) I'm sure there's more but I c an't think of it now...

~Narnia, when I was little I was much more obsessed with it. I abandoned it for LotR but it's coming back to me now. I used to play with these curved swords with our neighbors and I'd be like "haha I'm a calormen, beg for mercy" and of course I would read the books all the time and later when I moved up to New England after it snowed I would go outside and pretend it was Narnia with the spell on it and it really looked like it to. Oh and I had this brown blanket with a lion on it and I would pretend he was Aslan and i would talk to him *blushes* i know I was such a stupid child...

~Harry Potter. i LOVE J.K. Rowling for writing these books they are fantastical. Like with my LotR obsesseion i have also pasted pictures and magazine articles on the walls in my closet (my closet is really cool i wish you all could see it, hehe).

I think that's all for now, yes I am a very strange duck...

I am a HUGE LOTR fan, so mutch so that I learned silvan and quenya elvish, and to write in the tengwa letter! I much prefer the books to the movies, but P.J. is alright with me.

I am also a big Narnia fan, as well as D&D, and RPG games, my favorite being those done in Forgotten Realms, with Neverwinter Nights being the best. And I was a Star Wars fan, but I have been seriously displeased with the last two movies.

um, how about saying you could be a geek if you use sentences in all caps declaring whether one series of scifi is better than another?

Personally, I always enjoyed Star Wars more than Star Trek. Even though I don't think SW has great acting or is perfect by any stretch. I just enjoy watching it more. Just my taste.

However, that being said, I like StarGATE (SG-1 and Atlantis) much more than either Star Wars or Star Trek. ..Indeed...

faeriechylde
09-30-2004, 01:40 AM
I agree with Dragon. I like Star Wars better than Star Trek because Star Wars seems to me to be more personal. I never thought the acting was very good in any of them, old or new (the only reason the old ones are better is Harrison Ford, in my opinion), but they were always more entertaining to me than Star Trek for some reason.

Dragon

I'm also interested in what the future has for Star Wars after Revenge of the Sith (I don't mean books. We've had Star Wars books for years). Rumor has it that there will be a live action Star Wars television series produced by someone other than Lucas. I'm interested in seeing someone else taking the helm of the series and how he or she will handle it.

I realize this is getting off topic, but then again, maybe not. It could just show everyone how big of a geek I really am.

faeriechylde

Um... you just posted that twice, but hey, it's happened before... :D
You're right, Dragon, you're showing how big a geek you are, but that's cool. I admire geeks a lot because they are actually interested in seeking after knowledge (even if it is rather useless knowledge at times).
I am such a history geek... I'm probably the only one here who cares that Sargon the Akkadian stole Lugal-zaggesi's wife when he conquered his kingdom in Mesopotamia about 5,000 years ago. Or that, a few empires later, Ishbi-Erra of Isin was brave enough to steal back his city's gods when the Amorites stole them. That's what I've been learning in World Civilization I, which is without question my favorite class. Have any of you read the Epic of Gilgamesh? I think it's the most ancient piece of popular epic poetry we have found (but I'm not entirely sure, so don't quote me on that or anything). It's a fascinating story, and very strange, but definitely worth the read. We're moving on from Mesopotamia to ancient Egypt now, so I'll let everyone know if I learn something they should learn.

I've read Beowulf. The language is beautiful, very descriptive. But the plot is kind of simple, which, for me, is a bad thing. I have to have a really good/complex plot to anything.

faeriechylde
10-02-2004, 04:04 PM

GrayCloak,

I am not any smarter than you or anyone else here. I just happen to love and enjoy my hobby. We all are geeks here, but being a geek is a broad thing... I beileve most of you are what I call "general geeks". That simply means that you have a broad understanding of geeky stuff, like startwars, star trek, lotr, etc... I'm a general geek too, but I also go down a level of the branch... I'm more specificly, a computer geek. I love learning anything to do with computers.. However that doesn't exclude my love for star trek either. Look at it like a tree:

Geeks
General> (star trek, starwars, etc fans) mostly everyone on this site fits here
General + Computer> (software, hardware) this would be people like me, Specter, Aragon
General + Computer +
Gamer> (video game fans)

and so on and so forth... You get the idea..
:)

by the way, knowledge about star trek or middle earth is NOT useless!! :)

you know you're a geek when here you sit discussing this. i was too embarrassed to answer, but in all reality i'm too proud to answer! haha! because so many of us are geeks, it would seem as if being a geek is the norm. because being a geek is normal, none of us are geeks except those who claimed not to be geeks, or nearly. oh dear, i've gone and exposed my geekyness. that's ok, being a geek is fun! haha!

Dead Rain
11-14-2004, 04:18 PM
but really, what is the real definition of a geek?

pacifiquesea
11-14-2004, 07:16 PM
Perhaps the original question should have been 'what are you a geek about?'

I tend to think that if you aren't one of the people who think that life consists of only money, designer clothes and the opposite sex (and maybe football?) then you fit into 3 other categories: geek, nerd, and dork.

Geek is the highest tier, socially speaking. These are the people who freely love whatever subject - star trek, anime, lotr, comics - but also possess skills to interact with others. They may be introverted or extroverted, but can behave normally in social situations. They can be very smart or just an average person with a geeky passion.

Nerds are the smart ones with medium to low social skills. They usually specialize in a few areas and keep to themselves, though they can be brought out and tend to be nice and interesting when they'll talk to you.

Dorks are the lowest rung. These are the people who go looking for other people who are 'just as weird as they are' and are hyper conscious of their image. They often talk about how different they are from others and are exhibitionists, though unfortunately they don't tend to be very bright. Basically, they're geek posers, but they hate geeks as well.

What do you think? Anyone have different connotations for these words?

jennyjenjen56
11-15-2004, 03:15 AM
I think your very right!!! :D And I believe, at least I hope :P , That I fit into the Geek catigory. I wasn't exactly popular in highschool but I had a lot of friends. None of us were very alike but we got a long great, mostly because of our mutual belief in God. We also all liked to ack a little nuts! :) I don't think I'm stupid but I'm not brilliant either. I got A's and B's and the occasional C. I'm an extrovert and love being around people. I have pretty good social skills, at least in my opinion, but I am definatly a geek. I love lotr, harry potter, books, Narnia, and all of that good stuff. So a geek I am, dork and neard I'm not, hopfully at least! :D

faeriechylde
11-15-2004, 02:28 PM
Hmm, that's interesting, I would have seen geek and nerd as reversed in your definitions, but now I'm not sure. I guess I just thought of all of them as fairly interchangeable. Being from another country may have prevented me from really understanding the highly developed meanings of those words...

nejofsherwood
11-15-2004, 04:26 PM
there you are fae! i found you! i have never thought of any of those as different from each other, and i don't have the excuse of living in a different country. Ü

geek- a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake. [fool]
nerd- an unpleasant, unattractive, or insignificant person
dork- a dull stupid fatuous person
but what would a dictionary know? Haha!

yeah. same with me. my dad teaches Hebrew every once in a while. my bro tried it once but stopped after a while. i guess learning other languages would kind of be an "obsession" of mine too, even though i only know like five words of some of them!

Here's an update on my geekiness: When I read a Stargate news article (which I have on my homepage, but that's another geeky story) that said that SG-1 has been renewed for a 9th season, I actually hollered out loud. Nobody was around to hear me; it would have been a bigger geeky test if there were people to hear me whoop and holler.

This means SG-1's tying with X-files as the longest running sci-fi series (not including spinoffs), and X-files doesn't have any spinoffs (at least that I'm aware of) so stargate really has it beat.

Anyway, I figured you probably got it from anime or manga, pacifiquesea, but I've never quite gotten into those as much. My geekiness is mostly western based  . I did take Hebrew for two years, though. I love learning new languages.

i love the X-files!! so does my sister.
i guess i learned SOME but very VERY little of the japanese that i know from anime and manga too. but not rnearly as much as from just listening to Japanese ppl and looking things up.

i have to say that my geekyness has gotten much worse over the last few..eh... days. i've been reading my school texts as if they were novels. like good novels. i think i'm going crazy. oo. htat remeinds me of a quote!

Would you guys say being overly obsessed with the Wizard of Oz is geeky? I just recently moved into a new apartment, one that I don't have to share with a roommate (woohoo!!). So I was able to put up all of my WOZ stuff. My sister and brother-in-law came over the other day and she said she felt like she was walking into a WOZ museum. LOL

That comment told me I should probably cease the collecting of WOZ. Plus, I gotta start making room for LWW when movie stuff starts coming out! :)

But I am not sure anyway what makes you a geek: is it computery stuff, or just obsessing about things, or reading too much ...? Cuz I'm obsessive about books and movies that I like, and about my precious Mac (although I know so little about computers it's funny), but I'm not a gamer at all, so what do you think? hey I found a definition...form the dictionary!!!One entry found for geek.

geek
Pronunciation: 'gEk
Function: noun
Etymology: probably from English dialect geek, geck fool, from Low German geck, from Middle Low German
1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disapproved of
- geeky /'gE-kE/ adjective

are we misusing this word? does anyone bit the head of chickens? intellectual bent? what's that mean? just wondering.

legolas

I tried the clarinet, but i couldn't get a sound!! then I tried trumpet. The band decided I sounded like I sick duck(I can't buzz my lips). But the flute worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rosymole
08-10-2005, 02:42 PM
Flutes very cool, did you know that Flautists make the best saxophone players because they have a very relaxed grip on the mouth piece, where as with clarinet players they tend to grip very hard as you do with a clarinet and make it sound a little sharp all the time!

The problem with snakes is that the venom can kill you, if nothing else it will make you really sick. That's why you have to do the ol' bite 'n' spit. You bite of the head and then spit it as far as you can. I think my record is thirty-three feet, seven inches in inder four seconds. Oh and ladies, I'm single :eek:!

Modern, Cool Nerd
52 % Nerd, 65% Geek, 34% Dork

"For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd. Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eeked out for themselves a modicrum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgeable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)! Congratulations! "

For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in all three, earning you the title of: Outcast Genius. Outcast geniuses usually are bright enough to understand what society wants of them, and they just don't care! They are highly intelligent and passionate about the things they know are *truly* important in the world. Typically, this does not include sports, cars or make-up, but it can on occassion (and if it does then they know more than all of their friends combined in that subject). Outcast geniuses can be very lonely, due to their being outcast from most normal groups and too smart for the room among many other types of dorks and geeks, but they can also be the types to eventually rule the world, ala Bill Gates, the prototypical Outcast Genius. Congratulations!

For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in Nerd and Dork, earning you the title of: Tri-Lamb Material. The classic, "80's" nerd, you are what most people think of when they think "nerd," largely due to 80's movies like Revenge of the Nerds and TV shows like Head of the Class. You're exceptionally bright and smart, and partly because of that have never quite fit in with your peers or social groups. Perhaps you're realized, or will someday, that it is possible to retain all of the things that you like about being brilliant and still make peace with the social cliques around you. Or maybe you won't--it's really not necessary. As the brothers of Lambda Lambda Lambda discovered, you're fine just the way you are and can take pride in that. I mean, who wants to be like Ogre, right!? Congratulations!

I think I need a life....

I took this Nerd, Geek or Dork Test (http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=9935030990046738815) and here's the result...

heres mine:

21 % Nerd, 39% Geek, 34% Dork
For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored less than half in all three, earning you the title of: Joe Normal.

This is not to say that you don't have some Nerd, Geek or Dork inside of you--we all do, and you can see the percentages you have right above. This is just to say that none of those qualities stand out so much as to define you. Sure, you enjoy an episode of Star Trek now and again, and yeah, you kinda enjoyed a few classes back in the day. And, once in a while, you stumble while walking down the street even though there was nothing there to cause you to trip. But, for the most part, you look and act fairly typically, and aren't much of an outcast.

OH MY GOSH! i just saw bc's... she is the same as me! thats impossible!

i noticed that! lol, and thats excactly how i like you!!!!!!!!!!!!! for example... at school. I am friends with the 'outcast' as i said. so ppl look down on me. what they don't know is that i am a duffer (random) at heart.. and if they did know that they would hate me... so here, and band. are the 2 places (other then home) that i can truly be myself!

i would continue but i am tired of typing.

It's weird... Because of the way I act, and who I hang around with, we used to be kind of outcasts at our school... But we never minded, because there were so many of us. But now, even though yes, we're weird, we've loads of friends. I think our originality and weirdness is part of the appeal for people :D

I also love movies!!!!!OMGoodness i think i met my twin, lol. I am the excat same way! I have soo much LOTR stuff that it takes up the celing now, lol.
Im also a comic book nerd. I collect anything X-men, mainly.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being complete geek and 1 being not geeky at all, how geeky are you?

And if you are a true geek, what kind of evidence do you have to prove it?

There is another thread on this same theme at:
http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=204&highlight=geek

Most of us admitted to being at least moderately geeky. I think we decided if you are semi-obsessed with something to the point of knowing even the mindless trivia about it, then you are a geek in that cetegory, like a Star Trek geek or a Star Wars geek or a computer geek ...

09-20-2005, 11:52 AM
aslan, you are a geek. i define a geek as a person who decides to take it upon himself to be the expert in a cetain area of anything. for you it would be lewis and tolkein so dont worry. borntofly, there is a diffrence and here it is, a nerd is someone who says he knows everything and believes it. nerds are also ugly. geeks arent always that way. i myself am a geek. my expertise? fantasy factiods and english literature.

You know, in the classical sense of the word, a "geek" is a person who willingly eats non-food items (i.e. pica); glass, rocks, plastic, paper, wood, etc.

Is that from some slang dictionary or something? A lot of words that go "mainstream" have the most obscure origins.
