It`s very annoyying when people say OMG in religous threads.

I do get annoyed too, because even abbreviating the full statement is in my mind, still saying it and is being disrespectful to God. I just had to say that since it, like you office, has been bugging me too. Oh my gosh would be better than OMG, even if you're not really saying the actual words.

But why does "OMG" have to stand for "Oh my G*d?" It could be used to abbreviate for "Oh my goodness!":D I understand why you'd be upset, but you don't have to think of it as standing for using the Lord's name in vain. Think of it as "Oh my goodness!" instead.

Because as Christians, even abbreviating it is diserespectful. It could stand for oh my goodness, but even I don't use OMG for any abbreviation of either oh my G--, oh my gosh, or oh my goodness. I hardly even type those out unless I feel like it.

Yeah, it bugs mt, too. I don't think abbreviations really help, because everyone knows what you mean, and that's what is going through their head. If I use the abbreviation, I always write OMGosh, so people will know exactly what I'm saying.

I always thought OMG meant "Oh, my gosh!"
(and, in other theistic religious thought, it is also offensive in mainstream thinking to use it in a pejorative way as well.)

Yeah me too. And Goodness is still refering to God.....

Narborg,
You said, "Yeah me too. And Goodness is still refering to God....."
Always? Not in my case. I am pretty sure not in many other cases as well. In my case (because that is all for whom I can comment), I mean it for what it says, literally, not a direct reference to any deity. Maybe for you? I do not know.

Yeah, but saying, OMG (with the actual G-- thrown in) is unbelievers ways of just cursing God to His face outright. When you're a Christian, that should change. I say oh my goodness because it doesn't refer to God. It's a decent way to say, I'm shocked!

I agree with your definition about being "shocked". That is fine.
On your first comment, however, I disagree with you completely. I would never "curse" ANY concept of God, so when I use it, I would not be doing any such thing as you claim. Maybe you know a few people who are actually "cursing to God" and assume all are doing the same? I do not know your thinking, so I cannot understand why you would say any "unbeliever" is doing what you claim they are.

Maybe not all unbelievers, but I have known some (especially in the media, though I don't know them personally) who thank God for giving them an award, but yet they curse and sing trash and everything else.

What does that have to do with posting "oh, my gosh", "oh, my goodness" or OMG? I do not understand the relevance.

I always say oh my gosh and sometimes abbreviate it for omg..but i never meant oh my G*d. If any of you thought that, its my fault ..im sorry. Ill try not to abbreviate anymore so people wont think that.

Yeah i know! You are not supposed to say that especially in religious threads! Even outside them!

Yeah, if you do say OMG, make sure you specify it and OMGosh!
Aravis Kenobi
09-18-2006, 09:40 PM
That's a good idea. It denotes your witness of Christ when you say that without specifing oh my gosh or oh my goodness.

Then, as a Buddhist, is it okay to say "omg", meaning "oh, my gosh" or "oh, my goodness"? ;) Or should I say OMB?

With unbelievers or people who worship another god, we really don't care what you say and how you say it. What affects office and some others, including me, is the amount of Christians who use OMG in the terms of oh my G--. That's what's frustrating. Or the Christians who use OMG without specifing Oh my goodness or oh my gosh. We don't care necessarily what you say, we need to be concerned with how we act towards others and what our witness is to unbelievers.

Because it is technically against forum regulations to post OMG (oops!) on this board, I am locking the thread.
Several of you have made very worthwhile comments and so I am not deleting the thread, but I think it is time to stop it from growing.
Remember folks, you can describe everything from occasional irregularity to where baby penguins come from without using strong language. There are proper and acceptable terms for everything in the universe. Civility in speech and freedom of expression can go hand in hand, and here it is expected behavior. So I certainly agree with Office and the many others who have groused about loose language. And now for the lock.
