Hey, is it just me, or is anyone else a bit angry that the show Survivor on ABC has four ethnic groups separated into their own teams? What the heck were they thinking? I don't get why they would cause so much controversy by splitting up the ethnicities. It just doesn't seem right. In this day and age, with racism being such a nasty topic, I don't understand why the idea of segregation would be promoted on TV. Does this bother anyone else?

I don't think thats how they ment it to be. I think they did that so that
1.) They could get more publicity
2.) More people would get involved
3.) To see if race makes a difference at all (even though studies say it doesn't)
I personally like how they did that, after all eventually they will be merged

Yeah, they had this whole thing on Fox or CNN or something. They're doing it partly to 'represent everyone equally' (right...) and to show how people of the same race can act completely different. Mostly though, just for publicity.

Yeah, I've heard they were getting complaints that there wasn't enough mixed races in the show, so, they seperated them by race. I think it'll be interesting...thuogh it'll cause alot of controversy as well...

Well I heard it was getting a few bad reviews for this reason--and I watched the premiere last night. It was pretty stupid. The only thing I can really see coming out of it is new stereotypes. Its their new "social experiment", but really, it was a stunt for publicity-Survivor hasn't been that popular in the last few seasons, and they knew that if they did something controversial the critics and everyone else would start talking about it, either saying how wrong it was or whatever, and that induces people to watch because it peaks interest.

Well, how the players acted made it seem like they were representing their race.. showing htier whole race and every one else what they can do. I think this "social experiment" is actually really intereating, just to see how it plays out, especially if 2 people from 2 different groups make it to the final 2.

I think it's awful...Survivor must've run out of good ideas.

I don't see anything wrong with it. If you're going to put people in categories then how is grouping them by race any different than any other characteristic? I do agree that Survivor did it for publicity though.

Right! The whole focus of the show is now a battle between the races. It takes away from everything the old Survivor episodes presented.

I have always been a survivor fan and have watched every season consistantly...I was worried about what would happen this season, but when I watched it last night, there really wasn't anything wrong with it...I noticed that obviously people took leadership positions but there was an overall more close reltionship between tribe members- they all can relate to each other in one way or another...it will be very interesting to see how this season turns out!

Personally I believe that CBS and Survivor have started to run out of ideas on how to split up the teams. Maybe they haven't thought about doing a male vs. female season again? Didn't that season get some of the highest ratings?
But knowing a bit about how Survivor works there will most likely be a twist where the contestants are forced to switch teams. Until then though I'm definitely not going to try to watch. Splitting up by ethnicity is just stupid in my opinion.

Everyone knew it would be a controversial season doing the ethnic thing, but for those individuals participating in the contest, they all agreed to do it and had no problem with it. In fact some plain thought it was a great idea.
I do not believe that CBS and those involved in Survivor, especially Jeff Probst, had any intent on exploiting racism here. I am sure ratings were involved in it, but when you are the highest rated reality show on TV, you really don't need a lot of publicity stunts to pull it off.
The Amazing Race has always done similar things, pitting religious treams agains non-religious teams; having gay and lesbian couples on the show. Male vs. females, old vs. young. It may not have been so obvious to people, but it is there nonetheless.

I used to watch Survivor but I stopped because it's just become a really crummy show... I think they made it just to show the worst characteristics of people and make viewers mad.

I have never watched Survivor or any of those reality programs. I think it's weird to pit people against one another for money and then watch how low they will go to win. That's not right.
When I heard they had decided to divide the teams by race lines, I was appalled. If a teacher or school divided their class or student body up by race for a competition and then declared one race a winner over the others, there would be terrible outrage -- and rightly so.
You would think, in this day and age, harmony and cooperation between all races would be applauded. But I guess that is the whole point of programs like Survivor: not harmony and cooperation, but trying to see how cut-throat people will be in order to win.
It's sad, to me, that this is entertainment for Americans. How lost are we?

In watching Survivor over the past several years I have come to see that what is displayed on there is a sort of exposure of real human life. What will a person do to get ahead or win. There have been several professed born-again Christians on the show that were as cut-throat a player as any unsaved individuals. I will tell you this, it makes for some great sermon material.
I remember listening to two famous pastors, whom I will not mention their name. Suffice it to say that nearly every Christian would probably recognize their names and many non-Christians would as well. Both made statements that they got some of their best material for sermons from watching shows like Jerry Springer, Survivor, the Amazing Race, Oprah, etc.
