Into the Wardrobe
09-21-2006, 12:00 PM
You're right again! I think it's sweet that he used his mother's maiden name.

To answer your question, it was his 3rd school after his mother's death called Cherbourg...and he had a pretty bad head master at one of the schools. I thought that the bad one was when he was at Wynyard or Campbell, but I could be mistaken. I'm not sure if that is who you're refering to or not though. Let me know if I'm anywhere close to getting it right.

Son of Adam
09-27-2006, 03:25 AM
According to Douglas Gresham, Mr. Lewis' stepson, there are two wardrobes of his in universities in the United States. One is at Wheaton College in Illinois and the other he couldn't remember where it was for sure at the time. But Mr. Gresham also adamantly stated that no wardrobe in the Lewis' house was ever the inspiration for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". That the rumours to that effect were entirely false.

I seem to remember it being the London Daily Mail.

Here's one in case I'm right with the above. There was a book written somewhat in the mode of "The Great Divorce," titled "Between Heaven and Hell," by Peter Kreeft. Since Mr. Lewis died on the same day as John F. Kennedy, Mr. Kreeft imagined the two men meeting in eternity. They are joined by a third famous man who ALSO died that day. Okay....during his third glimpse of Joy, what was it that CS Lewis was reading?

Son of Adam

I think this is the right answer:

The third glimpse came through a few lines of Longfellow's translation of Esaias Tegner's Drapa:

I heard a voice that cried,
'Balder the beautiful
Is dead, is dead!'
And through the misty air
Passed like the mournful cry
Of sunward sailing cranes

For how many years were Joy Lewis and CS married? And how did he meet her?

Son of Adam
10-15-2006, 04:02 AM
AS for how long they were married, it depends upon which wedding you want to go by. April 23, 1956: Married Joy Davidman Gresham in secret civil ceremony when British Home Office denied continuance of her residency permit.

March 21, 1957: Married Joy in church ceremony at her hospital bed.

AS for meeting Joy, I don't know what details you want but they first met in: 9/24/52 Jack meets Joy Gresham for lunch at the Eastgate Hotel. Later she and her two sons move to England after her husband deserted her.

2. Natural Affection

3. Friendship (philia)

4. Charity (Agape)

Chesterton wrote a book that was particularly influential in shaping CS Lewis's path to Christianity. What book was this?

Son of Adam

I believe it was The Everlasting Man

Copperfox

That book, by the way, remains timely to this day as an explanation of why Western civilization both needs and deserves to be defended. Chesterton's account of what was at stake in the wars between Rome and Carthage is an eye-opener.

Now, moving right along:

Why did Reepicheep object to a bear being one of the "marshals" for Peter's duel with Miraz?

Into the Wardrobe
10-18-2006, 02:21 PM
Actually it was Trumkin who objected because he was afraid that the bears would suck their paws and embarass the Narnian army. However, Reepicheep wanted to be a Marshall since the only trumpeter was among the mice and they'd felt left out...and if Reepicheep was included as a marshall they'd feel better about being left out earlier.

How many bedrooms are contained at the Lewis' home, the Kilns?

How many bedrooms in total or how many are used for guests who are there studying at the seminars?

I was thinking total. I had read about it awhile back in something discussing the restoration of the place. So, I hope that I have it right.

Son of Adam

I know that the house contained 12 rooms altogether and I think, not sure, that there were a total of 6 bedrooms.

We'll let IntotheWardrobe verify that when she gets online here...in the meantime, the next question is:

A very tough one :D . Which two George Eliot books were among CS Lewis' favorites?

Into the Wardrobe
10-19-2006, 11:49 AM
I read that there were 4 bedrooms. I heard that the Kilns was a much smaller house than most people think. I guess none of the rooms were that big. I guess when Doug Gresham heard that people were moving in to restore the Kilns he said that they'd have to be very practical. Once the family moved in, they agreed with him.

As to your other question...I have no idea which George Eliot books were his favorite. Can't wait to hear about it though.

LifeMaiden
10-19-2006, 06:39 PM
Adam Bede and the Mill on the Floss were two of his favorite books.

Another tough question. The author Edmund Spense penned a book called THE FAERIE QUEEN, which was one of Lewis' favorite books because Spense created the 'land of faerie'. Now what other Spense work did Lewis adore?

Son of Adam
10-20-2006, 04:15 AM
I am assuming you mean Edmund Spenser who wrote "The Faery Queene" and then "The Shepheardes Calender"

Yeah, Spenser. Who did you think I was talking about? The title was spelled FAERIE QUEENE in the NARNIAN.

LifeMaiden

Next question: What pastoral romanticist contemporary of Spenser did Lewis enjoy reading, and what was this author's name and the name of his book?
