Lost Dreamer

For a long time i thought that my opinion on Gay/Lesbians was established. Queer=Bad.
But then one day somethign happened that really shook my foundation. A older Christian frined and i were having a conversation, and somehow we got around to the fruit-loops of mankind. Exactly what i said i dont remember, but the jist of it was that i thought being gay was really bad and how disgusting our world was getting. (don't judge me yet...just hang on.) My frined's respone suprised me. She said she knew alot of gays, some of them the best people she'd ever met. Not much, but it bothered me.
It didnt take me long to realize that i had based an opiniion on what others had told me--that i had condemmed somone jsut because my mentors did.
As a Christian, God calls us to love one another. I know gays are real people, who have real lives and real problems. i know being gay could be classified as jsut another sin--maybe not as bad as muder, (who am i to judge?) but a sin, nonetheless.
So here's my question: Where do gay's really stand? Are gay's bad just because they've sinned? or is it different because its a life-style choice they've made; which in essence could be compared to doing osmehtign like beocmoing a Devil-worshiper, or attempting scuicide?
how should we, as Christians, act with our dealings with them?
My gut feeling is still Gay=Bad, even though my brain tells me thats not how God tells us to act. Are gay's 'bad people'? or are they jsut sinners? should we treat them like fornicators, or like somone who jsut need's Christs love?
I know that somethign like the latter must be true, yet i'm rather lost. I can't seem to get any conviction on this. I know it may be a touchy subject but i just have to ask. What do you all beliveve?
(and note: i am not trying to condemm, hurt, or anger anyone. i am simply trying to understand a touchy subject.)
