Sam is my favorite hobbit in the bookshe's the real hero I think. I don't like Frodo in the movies either, but I liked him the books. In fact I liked all the characters in the books better than in the movies.

I liked them all in the books, and in the movie I would say Pippin. He's funny. My least fave in the movies is Frodo. I think he was good in the beginning, but toward the end he seemed very weak and really it was Sam who dragged him along ... he got so wimpy by the end.

LOL! You can't stand Frodo in the movies because he acts so weak and fey, it's not even funny. But Sam is good and Aragorn. If he were a hobbit, he would be my fave.

You mean no one liked Lobelia and Otho . . . or the Gaffer . . . or Rose Cotton, who was a pillar of strength and love to wait for her beloved Samwise????
Pippen and Merry were no doubt the boys who refused to grow up until they had their adventures and were great leaders when they returned. Their antics both amused and chagrined the reader.
Frodo was so upper-class, something I could not identify with. If he had fallen into the furnace of Mount Doom, I probably wouldn't have felt much. He was always given preferential treatment. You know: the haves always get the better half. When the going got tough, he was the first one to want to lie down and give up. Perhaps one could blame the influence of the Ring, but when you read of his character, he was pretty much a loner and liked it that way. He never learned to be a team player in his youth, and when things got a little sticky, he just retreated into his own little world of protection under Bilbo's umbrella.
Sam had to be the strongest Hobbit of them all, a working man with two PhDs in the schools of hard knocks and common sense. He didn't know or undertand the word "quit." Miller Time happened when the work was done. He's my kind of guy, if you will.

I probaly wouldn't have either, if that had happened in the movie I might have laughed, but if it had happend in the book I might fell different. Fordo is a much different charcter in the movie than in the book.

Yes Frodo doesn't seem like such a weakling and a whiner in the books. In the books, you know that every step is a struggle for him, but he is determined to go one. In the movies you get the idea that he isn't determined to do anything except keep anyone else from getting the ring, that's the only thing he ever seems bothered about.
Do you think (and I know it's not an allegory!!!) JRRT was spoofing the British aristocracy as high-minded but weak and fey, people who could only succeed in their high-mindedness on the backs of sturdy commoners who, while they couldn't grasp the intricacies of their high-minded ideas, at least believed in good and evil and wanted to fight on the right side?

I'm not much of an Anglophile. I've concentrated my studies on the East. So, I don't want to offend anyone out of my ignorance, but it does seem that the British do like to tweak the noses of the nobility, especially in their comedy.

Sam is my favorite hobbit; dear sweet loyal Sam! When I first read the books he was my undesputed favorite character.
Frodo, however is a close second. Now I haven't seen a lot of support for Frodo on this thread, and I'm puzzled, why?
Frodo was a hero in the truest sense; he did the best he could, and better than any man could have hoped. He sacrificed EVERYTHING for the sake of Middle Earth, and unlike the other hobbits there was no 'happy ending' for him.

I must agree with BTF. In the books, Frodo was all that Gray says he was, and I really admired his character in the books. In the movies, it seems like he is a candle in the wind, weak. It's too bad.

fatty bolger's always been a favourite of mine too. he doesn't have the courage of the others, but he still does all he can.
frodo in the movies bugged me no end. he doesn't seem to know how to use his sword at all. all he really does is fall over, and make female tennis player noises. In the books, Frodo is one of my favourite characters. you can really sense how much strength he has, and you can't but have respect for him. he especially (out of the hobbits) shows that size means very little when it comes to power. and he contrasts very well with boromir, who physically is very strong, but mentally is so weak.

Totally agree about Frodo in the movies, and your assessment of Frodo in the books. But not Boromir, he is not mentally weak at all. He is driven by a passion to save his family and his homeland, and in that mentality is very strong.

Hello all,
My personal favorite is Sam. He's so loyal and true. His character from the books appeals to me more than the movies. (I took the LOTR personality test and mine is most like his :))
But poor Frodo, the movies wussed him up. All the Hobbits had stronger characters in the books.
Gryphon
08-28-2005, 12:37 AM
i dunno. i think the movies just made him more human. more relateable. people cant be strong all the time but still prevail. i think that's what they had in mind. oh, and i like sam but came out as gandalf in the personality test. although, sam was the next closest.

My favorite hobbit from the very beginning has been Pippin. I didn't know so many other people liked him, too! :D His personality is very funny and he has such a strong bond with Merry. Oh, and by the way, Frodo wasn't 'wimpy and weak' he was just weak from the ring making him that way-it wasn't his fault. I think he would've died, though, without Sam.

Welcome, Pegasus! I didn't see you post before. Glad to have you here. I agree with you that Pippin is a good character -- in that quiz about "which LOTR character are you?" I came out Pippin!
I agree with you that Frodo is not weak, and it was the ring that dragged him down. In the books it is very clear he is determined to see his plan through or die trying. I just think the in last two movies, they didn't get that gritty determination out of Elijah Wood, what came across mostly was his weakness. In the movies. Not the books. I blame PJ. Not EW.
My favourite is Merry, I think. I love the relationship between him and Pippin, but I think he's my favourite 'cause he's sort of an older sibling type. I'm a younger sibling, and I definitely played Pippin to my sister's Merry, and I don't know where I'd have got to without her. So, I like the mixture of being mischievous, but having to be the responsible one a lot of the time.

Who is my favorite hobbit? That's quite a question...I wager I'd have to say Bilbo Baggins (from The Hobbit), because he it is who has such a brave and kind heart, and is willing to take the extra "step of faith" to accomplish certain tasks (even though he wish he were back in his home by the fireside, etc.). I can relate to this personality quite a bit - it reminds me of so many of the men and women God has used in history, recorded in the Bible. Timid, often, and humble, considering themselves unable to take on what the Lord requests of them - but they are those whom God uses.
I Corinthians 1,27: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty...
From the FOTR movie, Gandalf says to Frodo: Hobbits really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know of their ways in a month; and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you.

Well, Sam is pretty much the best, let's be quite honest here. By Tolkien's own word, Frodo becomes a bit "rarified" by his great suffering--a bit distant. Bilbo, Pippin and Merry don't "air time" necessary for fuller character development that Sam gets. Who else provides that unique mix of loyalty, fearlessness, and humor, as well as the weaknesses we can all so identify with, but Sam?
Still, all these hobbits are great. Off the cuff, speaking of the sort of "second tier" hobbits, I personally like the Gaffer, Sam's dad. The nut doesn't fall far from the tree.

Hey, Elijah Wood's performance as Frodo is fine!
I just don't know if he was properly cast but he
did the best he could with his role.
The same with Viggo Mortenson. He wasn't quite right for
that role, but he pulled it off.
The rest of the cast is perfect, except for Liv Tyler as Arwen. Who annoys the heck out of me sometimes when I watch, and then not so much at others. She's fine too.

Pippin, there's something about him and his curious nature. He is quite valuable to the Fellowship despite what Elrond first thought about him. I don't mind him in the books, but I don't mind him, he just isn't my favorite hobbit! I also thing that PJ messed up Merry and Pippin, Pip can be dumb at points in the book, but he also can be smart! And Merry was really dumb in the books, he actually was one of the smarter hobbits!!!

Frodo was weaker in the movies than in the books. He was not that loyal to Gollum as in the movies. He didn't send Sam away. And he was known as friend of the elves.
Though, I like Frodo :D Pippin is my biggest favorite.

Yeah, it was not Elijah's fault. I also thought Arwen was a bit too weak. But anyway, the movies were and are still the greatest ever made :D

Me? I'd go for Samwise Gamgee....why?
Loyalty, Courage, Stronger resistance than Frodo when he was a ring-bearer for a while.
Peregrin Took also not bad. An additional humor character to entertain us. I think its because of his Scottish accent. Or was it just Billy Boyd? :D
Eressea
01-15-2006, 10:04 PM
ah, yes, but even the little time that sam had the ring, he was reluctant to give it back, adn was already thinkiing mightly plans ... samwise the great. ect.
Mrs Gil-Galad Took
01-16-2006, 07:36 AM
In the movies it looked like Sam was reluctant to give the ring back to Frodo but that one of the changings Peter Jackson made.
As you read in the books, the ring tried to seduce Sam before and not as in the movie at the moment he was ready to give it back to Frodo. So, I rather believe the books than the movies. The ring told Sam he would do more for him if he would keep him and he would be smarter than Frodo and also that Sam would be the greatest gardener in the whole Middle Earth and Sam would have all gardens for himself, but then Sam thought: I don't want to be the greatest gardener and I don't want to have all gardens for myself, I only want my own garden. At that moment, the ring knew Sam was strong. And when Sam gave the ring back to Frodo, he didn't even have time to doubt about giving it back, because Frodo grabed it out of his hand. So, I would say yes, Sam was stronger than Frodo, but who knows what the ring might have done if Sam was standing on the edge of Mount Doom.

I just think he was stronger because he didnt have it as long as Frodo did

yeayeayea.... thats what i meant, peterlover... basically... i just am not very good sometimes at finding the right words?... i agree... but i do think that if sam had had the ring for a longer time, he might have lowered his resistance to it... who knows what would have happened if he had had it as long as frodo had... and dont forget... frodo also was stabbed by the morgul blade (doubtless, twas through his own fault of putting on the ring in the first place? what do u think?) and that was definatly against him...

I think that Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam alone of all beings ultimately escaped the Ring's power because they all willed to surrender it. Bilbo chose to pass it along, and though he wavered when it came down to it and had to be helped (a couple of ways) by Gandalf, he managed it - as Gandalf himself points out. Frodo willed to take the Ring to Mount Doom, and even though he was terribly weakened and faltered at the last moment, a way was made for him to triumph after all. I also agree that Sam's brief time of holding it, and the noble reason he took it in the first place, and his love for his master, all combined to give the Ring very little hold on him. He surrendered it most easily.

Yeah! That is true and didn't Gandalf say in the books when Frodo was in Rivendell (after he was stabbed by that Morgul Blade): Hobbits were more tougher than he thought? So, I think gandalf did a good thinmg to sent Frodo on his mission to Mordor and to sent Samwise with him.

PEREGRIN TOOK IS THE CUTTEST AND FUNNIEST HOBBIT OF THEM ALL.
But SAMWISE GAMGEE is the bravest hobbit of all. What would have happened when Sam didn't take the ring from Frodo?
As Frodo said: Frodo wouldn't have gotten far without Sam. And that is true.
Pippin is my favourite and he is/was (well the person who played him, Billy Boyd) the sexiest guy in Scotland! Yay!
Anyway, I think Sam was the bravest aswell and that Frodo wouldn't have gotten far without Sam... All hail Pippin & Sam!

In the books I loved Sam because of his good and sweet character. The part when he almost wanted to kill himself when he thought Frodo was dead is so heartbreaking. You gotta love Sam. But in the movies it is Pippin. He is so adorable :D

Who would be your fave hobbit? Either in the books, or the movies?
Me i think Pippen is my fave in the books and the movies, i also love the actor who plays him, he's great( hes cute to!). I thnik my leats fave would be frodo, sorry to the frodo lovers but i hate him, in the movies,he is ok in the book.

in answer to some of our wonderings, (theres more, i jst havent gotten that far yet...)
in chapter two.. gandalf says regarding hobbits
"... soft as butter they can be, and yet sometimes as tough as old tree roots. i would think it likely that some would resist the rings far longer than most of the wise would believe...."
heh... heres something that frodo says that reflects my feelings of hobits...
" should like to save the shire, if i could- though there have been times when i thought the inhabitents too stupid and dull for words, and have felt that an earthqake or an invasion of dragons might be good for them../.....'
yea?
who has a quiz? where is it! i love takng those things... (and getting the results that say 'congrats, u are a genus,... ect.')
FRODO IS THE BOMB!... wll say again elijah did a good job with him,... its not his fault that he wasnt the best persone for that role...

I can easily seperate the actors from the characters. It is a movie and lots of people are losing their interest in LOTR because the movies are over. That is not unusual. But my love for the hobbits is not based on the actors. I already loved them in the books :D

I do hope someone makes The Hobbit, but I don't know if PJ will be the best for it. As it was written as a childrens book, but there are many age groups that love it, I don't think PJ will be the best for it. He would make the Battle of Five Armies too much like he made the battle of pelenor feilds or something. But since so many of the charecters in The Hobbit are in LOTR, I don't think I could picture anyone else making it or playing them.

02-04-2006, 07:22 PM

I have written an RPG on here! I like it. It's called "Just Another Day in Narnia." I went to Rivendell once before the dominion of Sauron and then after to help the Fellowship defeat yet another evil. I took Boromir's place! But I got shot in the sholder by an orc arrow, while traveling through Moria, but Legolas carried me out! :) <3

She is crazy about Legolas and the virtual walk, we have done it so many times on other forums and it is funny how often Legolas appears on the most ridiculous places. We even had a virtual bus trip with the Witch-King and the fell beast on board of the bus :D :D
