View Full Version : Does aspartame really causes brain damage?
Ephinie

Well, what do you think? When I was little, we were never allowed to drink any "diet" sodas because my mum said aspartame was in nutri-sweet, and that stuff causes brain damage.

Very funny. But you are discerning....
Matter of factly I think this. Most women pick saccherine and it comes in pink packets. Most women pick aspartame and it comes in blue packets. Coincidence? I don't think so.... ;)

I agree, Eveningstar. In fact, I do not believe in coincidences.
I will say this, however... diet sodas taste BAD.

I have read that there is actually quite a lot of conclusive evidence that aspartame is bad for you... but apparently it's in lots of stuff besides diet soda, too, and very hard to avoid. I try not to worry about it too much.
And I agree that diet soda tastes awful. I really can't stand the stuff. :)

I use Splenda, but most of those artifical sweeteners leave an aftertaste. And a spoonful of real sugar won't kill you.

Yeah, my mom being without a doubt the most obsessive health nut in the world, I can tell you for a fact that aspartame causes both brain damage and bone deterioration. She tells me that if I am faced with the decision to drink diet or regular soda (she forbids me to even entertain the idea) then I should choose the regular soda, because although it does have quite a deal of sugar in forms like high fructose corn syrup, diet sodas use aspartame, which can really affect you in the long run. I'm not kidding, either. I could post some articles and diagrams up here if you don't believe me. Trust me, this house has plenty.

I should be dead now then technically because I drink diet soda once in a while. But, I drink a lot more water. You could die from just about anything, so there's no need to get that paranoid about aspartame. I'm a health nut too and I'm not dead or brain damaged. They say Splenda had chlorine in it, blah blah blah. There's 'cancer' in the air, water, earth, sun...you name it. If you have to live life being paranoid about everything you might as well kill yourself. Cell phones give you 'brain damage.' Loud music 'damages your eardrums.' Smog has 3500 chemicals in it. Blah blah blah.

lol, very true. I think what bothers me the most about the sweetners and medicine is the "yes, it's safe" and then three years or so later, "no, it's not". I just use good old sugar in small quantities.

A suggestion - how about, instead of chemical additives like saccharine or aspartame, one use, as a sweetener, fructose? It is natural and appears to be pretty healthy for most people - yet, if someone does have Hyperglycemia (Diabetes), please be careful with fructose as well. It could set off the balance of the blood sugars. And, if that is a problem, try Banaba (no, not banana), as it helps to decrease the hyperglycemia without creating a rebound hypoglycemic condition, as is common in injected insulin, for those who use that. (Banaba, by the way, is extremely cheap - about US$ 0.01 per dose, here. I do not know what it might be in other countries.)
Good luck with the artificial sweeteners.

Yeah, but Ice Maiden, the body is designed to fight off abnormalities in the air, earth, water, etc. Anything natural can be fended by the immune system. Aspartame really can affect you, even if you don't want to believe it. It has a direct affect on a person, MUCH more direct than loud music or smog.
And prescription drugs are rarely beneficial to you. Rather than fixing your problem right away, the drugs make it feel better for a day or so, and the cost of that reward is pretty scary. A person can keep taking them and slowly get worse, therefore not getting rid of the sickness. Alternative medicine is what you should look into if you really want to boost your health. It may not work as quickly as expected, but it provides the body with something it can use to regain stability.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that a good balance between diet soda and water builds up the health they think they wouldn't have if they only drank diet soda. Water doesn't provide any nutritional value whatsoever. It builds up the stamina that allows a person to live, but doesn't at all help them nutritionally. A person should focus on what they drink without water taking part in the equation.

Water is one of the most important elements a body needs to live. You'd die first without water rather than food. Any healthy person and any person with a fitness or nutritional background will tell you drinking water is healthier than drinking soda or any other liquid, Fawkes. LOLOL.
"water has no nutritional value."
Neither does soda, diet or regular.
" Water has no nutritional value."
Yeah, it only has the essential elements needed for the human body to function. It's why people in athletics and sports drink it all the time, because of its complete lack of nutritional value ( NO CALORIES! NO FAT! NO VITAMINS! NO MINERALS!) but it's hydrogen and oxygen...you know, H20?
And it's free.

Wait, wait, wait. I said all that! Yes, water definitely allows the body to function, but that does not mean it provides it anything to benefit from, healthwise. Take a water bottle and look at the back of it for me. Tell me what nutritional value it has. "Nutritional" is very different from "Sustaining". Water sustains a body, it does not provide it with any form of nutritional value.
The whole point of this thread was to explain why aspartame is unhealthy. It is in soda, diet and regular, and is BAD FOR YOU. Now, because water does not provide any nutrition (not SUSTENANCE, NUTRITION), a person's health can only decline by drinking diet soda. That is all I'm trying to say. Water has no nutritional value, that's why you should counteract drinking soda with drinking something like milk or organic fruit and vegetable juices. (Jeez, I'm beginning to sound like my mom!) :o

Okay let's talk about brain damage and other 'things' that can happen to you in life. Making life just a momentous challenge.
1. Don't drink diet soda. Your brain will have as many holes in it as the soda has bubbles.
2. Don't breathe. The air has cancer in it and 3500 chemicals from smog.
3. Don't eat. Every food you have has potential cancer in it, and pesticides, antibiotics, and poison.
4. Don't go out in the sun. You'll die of skin cancer.
5. Don't do anything. You'll die of boredom.

Yes, we all know that water does not provide the body with nutritional value, but if I were out in the desert and I couldn't have milk or organic juice, I'd rather have water over food. You can't survive more than a day or two without water. You CAN survive weeks with food, juice, and soda and milk. Which is more important? Water.
You know what else is bad for you, Jack? Other than aspartame? Chlorine, antibiotics, various cancer-causing chemicals, genetically-altering pesticides, all the things you find in nearly everything you eat. Unless you live on a commune, and even that's no guarantee of what's in the dirt, air and ...water....aspartame is the least of my concerns when it comes to my diet.

If you htink about it........one of them side effects ( ) can be cured, whilst the other cannot....wait..well it depends what sort of side effect you get from the artifical sugar, but anywayyyyyyys...real sugar cause Diabetes, bad liver functioning (or that's what Diabetes causes..yeah), Hypoglycemia (to some....like, uhm, *grunts* ehmeeee), or Hyperglycemia...tachychardia..yeah. Basically in an overdose..which can happen a lot if yuo really like coke o_0. I know a boy....nvm....actualyl, yeah, Im going to say it; who drinks 5 cans of Vaults like..everytime he talks to me (it makes me speechless...ghaghagha), and when I heard him...after that whole 5-cans-of-vault escapade..it was like he had inhaled...something. +_+ Soo its obviously against the human body if it makes..that one boy...sound like he did..ghagha it was cool thoiugh..very..cool...*stares into the horizon*. In the long run I definitely think real sugar is safer believe it or not, but I won't freak out if I have a diet coke once in a while or something sugar free. In truth, when you look at many of these 'sugar free' 'fat free' or 'diet products' they are full of chemicals. It's better to eat one small cookie that's 'real' than a bagful of 'sugar free'. I mean that it's a mistake to think you can chug diet sodas and eat stuff with aspartame and olestra, and think you're on a healthy diet.

There was this commercial a few years ago where this guy is standing in front of the camera and says, "I'd like you to spend the next few minutes reading the back of your artificial sweetener packet..."
Then the camera slowly backs up, to reveal that the guy is standing in a field of sugarcane - all nice and green, with the blue sky overhead and the breeze blowing, while birds sing in the background. And the guy goes, "...interesting, huh?"
The implication, of course, being that you probably can't even pronounce the long chemical names on the back of the packet, while here is this lovely natural product growing on God's green earth. I thought it was clever, although it's hard to imagine SUGAR needing to advertise - don't people consume enough of it without that?
The problem I have with sugar isn't real vs. artificial - it's just the fact that it's in EVERYTHING. That's what's killing us all. The occasional cookie or piece of pie wouldn't be such a big deal if there weren't sugar also added to every drink, snack, sauce, or canned or boxed food on the market. Along with all the refined carbs we consume - we're just ASKING to become diabetic.

Another drink that's actually got some benefits and is recommended by sports medicine doctors is Gatorade. It at least has potassium in it. Fresh vegetable juices, especially for those of us who aren't big veggie eaters, are great too. I actually do live in the desert LOL, so I found that I had to drink MORE water up here because of the dryness and the high elevation, but I also stock my fridge with a six pack of diet soda, plenty of Sports drinks, a fantastic organic vegetable and fruit drink from a company called BOLTHOUSE FARMS, and the occasional energy drink.

Someone mentioned "diet chicken". It reminded me of Gary Larson's cartoon of the "Boneless Chicken Ranch", and upon searching, found this article called "Chicken Soul for the Soup".

Yes, tell him it's 'reduced fat, reduced calorie chicken subsitute.I should so try that sometime...
This one time, he started griping at me because I made spaghetti with ground turkey instead of beef (which, by the way, I've found out tastes better than beef with stuff like spaghetti). Well, I waited until he had eaten like half of it before telling him that it wasn't really turkey but tofu. He got so riled up that he went into the kitchen and started scrounging around to find the empty turkey packaging. Then he came back and was all like, "It says turkey on the box." And I was like, "Tukey doesn't come in a box." And he was like, "You know what I mean."

Hand your brother a can of diet soda, tell him the aspartame causes brain damage, and hopefully, the select part of the brain damage he suffers from that can of soda will make him 'not complain' about turkey in spaghetti. :D

Another drink that's actually got some benefits and is recommended by sports medicine doctors is Gatorade. It at least has potassium in it. Fresh vegetable juices, especially for those of us who aren't big veggie eaters, are great too. Actually, Gatorade isn't really that good for you. It contains a ton of sodium which will only make you thirstier. It's also bad for your teeth.

Has anyone seen a commercial for TAB Energy Drink? it appears to be pink. Actually, I didnt want to know if anyone has seen the commercial, but if it is any good and gives you any energy? I only drink tea ... I drink way more tea than water ... I am probably jacked up on caffeine and anti-oxidants ...

I didn't say you could use that as a substitute for water. It has potassium in it to replenish the potassium you lose when you exercise or you're sick. The doctor told me to simply rinse out my mouth with water when I drink a sports drink, and I've never suffered from thirst afterwards when I drank it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I saw this advertised in a fitness magazine and went to SAFEWAY to get it...they're the only stores which carry it here in my area, and I bought 30 cans of it.
But Inky, with ANY energy drink, they're really not that 'good' for you. Every person responds differently to it. Some of my clients cannot tolerate even one energy drink because of their sensitivity to caffeine. Some can tolerate two or three a day. I would sip it slowly, and start off with one can, see how you feel.
Honestly though, as a trainer, I don't recommend energy drinks that often. It can dehydrate you, but it's okay for once in a while. I just drank a can in fact, before I head off to the gym to train five more people . * sinks head down on my keyboard and braces herself for a brutal work evening*

This must be some kind of marketing ploy to revive Tab soda, which has all but died off in the market place.... :o

TAB was so 70's ...:) I remember in my mom's magazines they had TAB soda everywhere, with that pink can. I'm wondering just why they bought this energy drink out, especially since you can't really find it anywhere but Safeway. If any of you find it at another store I'm curious as to which one. And of course it's geared towards 'women' with the pink color.

Thanks, IM. I think in Texas Randalls and Safeway may be the same. I'll take a look for it. Is it carbonated, is that why it dehydrates you? I just started a work out routine about three weeks ago, and I need some energy to get through the day after working out in the AM!

Did you get a personal trainer??? :D Yes, it is carbonated, but the reason energy drinks can dehydrate you is because of the caffeine. I would drink half before exercising and half afterwards. :) But be sure to drink water too.I drink 2.5 liters of water a day in addition to one energy drink.
There are some drinks to be avoided COMPLETELY. Don't EVER, EVER drink these drinks called SPEED STACK or RIPPED FORCE. They used to contain ephedrine, ( a lot of it) which can seriously make you shake and raise your heart beat. They took the ephedrine out but then they have about 700 millgrams of caffeine in each drink, which is the equivalent of 8-9 cups of coffee in ONE bottle.
