Since I haven't seen some of the more recent religion films (i.e., End of the Spear, passion of the Christ, etc) the best movie I can think of is Narnia. If you're a Christian, and know the parallels that are in the book, you couldn't miss the parallels in the film.

The Second Chance is a new movie with Micheal W. Smith that is really good. I also like the Passion of the Christ.

There's also the TEN COMMANDMENTS with Charlton Heston, an older movie which some of you guys may not be familiar with. Current religious movies which are great...can't beat the PASSION OF CHRIST. Check out that thread about it in the Christian section here. :)

Usually around Easter time they bring out movies on television about Christ, and some of those are worth seeing also!

Jesus of Nazareth is a good movie I've seen on the History Channel at times. There's also Dreamworks's The Prince of Egypt and Joseph: The King of Dreams.

I loved the Prince of Egypt. Talk about great special effects in an animated film...the soundtrack was good also.

Gee, nobody mentioned "Last Temptation of Christ"? I am surprised. But the day is early.

Personally, the best two "religious movies" I have seen are "Driving Miss Daisy" and "On Golden Pond". I say these two, because the religion of LOVE is so very important, and both of these movies are "love stories", imho.

(No, I do not think "Little Buddha" was a "great" religious movie, but it was somewhat fair with the concepts of Buddhism.) Given the time of filmmaking in the 1950s, I agree that the technical aspects of "The Ten Commandments" were spectacular.

What was the movie with Keanu Reeves as Buddha?

Well I guess we can count LWW as religious with its Biblical parallels as one of the greatest movies ( with religion as a theme).

I just thought of another possibility - "The Celestine Prophecy"

I do not know if it will ever reach Japan before it hits the DVD market, but I believe, if it is anything like the book, it would make an excellent "religion movie". The trailers look great.

I've seen that movie! It's good, but extremely long and drawn out. At least it's fairly true and it sticks closer to Exodus than does Prince of Egypt.

I saw End of the Spear a couple weeks ago, and that was good. The end was really funny.

I love The Ten Commandments! When I was 13 I stayed up til 5 a.m. one night and watched the entire thing. I haven't seen End of the Spear yet, but I plan on it. Prince of Egypt is great, I love the music and the animation.

What was that movie about anyways? It sounds like the 'spear' was the lance that Longinus used to pierce Christ in the ribs?

I think I need to clarify what I was talking about. The film 'The Message' was about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the early days of Islam (i.e. his ministry amongst the Tribes of Ishamel, the Battles of Badr and Uhud, etc.). Just though I might mention it, since it's one of the few film portrayals of early Islam and the Prophet (pbuh).

I have read some reviews of that movie, and apparently the ones who reviewed it found it even worse than I found the book when I read it. I agree with you on the fact that it looks great, but the storyline in the movie is completely messed up.

To get slightly back on-topic... I simply loved the movie Jesus Christ Superstar. :) It's not a "standard" take on those days in the life of Christ but I think it does portray the messages that were in the Bible quite correctly through the singing and dancing.

Solya,

Thank you for your input about Celestine Prophecy. I will reserve judgment until I see it, though.

I remember when Star Wars first came out in the 1970s. The film reviewers all thought it was nothing more than a "cowboys vs. indians" type movie, that it would never make it big in the theater.

Yes, some books just cannot translate into movies, as some plays cannot. Personally, I found it hard to concentrate on Jesus Christ Superstar in movie form, but the stage performance was quite wonderful. K-PAX, on the other hand, translated quite well, I thought.

I really love Jesus Christ Superstar. I think the movie's better than the play.
