It was as though I pushed past the overcoats at the back of the wardrobe and wandered into another strange, wonderful world.

Yesterday, I was given a tour of the set of the latest Narnia film, “Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

I wasn’t allowed to take photos of the set (you’ll have to wait for the movie to come to cinemas at the end of 2010) but I can describe some of what I saw. It was very impressive.

I saw four sets. The first one was a medieval, Italian village with dirt streets and high, stone, castle-like walls. Construction workers were pulling it down as filming was finished in that set.

The next three sets I saw were of the ship, the Dawn Treader, where most of the action takes place.

You’re filming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader in Australia at the moment, how’s that going?

Will Poulter: Its really good fun thank you, I’m really enjoying myself but I am missing home quite a bit, especially my family and friends. Although I will be sad to leave I will be really pleased to be home for Christmas.

Your character, Eustace Scrubb, isn’t very well behaved and of course you played the ‘most badly behaved kid in school’ in Son of Rambow. How do you keep getting these type of roles?

Will Poulter: I know, I would really like to play a nice character for once! I feel quite bad about having to play those characters and I hope there is no one like Eustace Scrubb!

The famous introduction in the book by CS Lewis is: “There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” Would you say that’s a fair evaluation of your character?

Will Poulter: Absolutely. He is a complete brat, he’s obnoxious, rude, selfish and cowardly and has no respect for anyone other than himself. However he does become a much better adjusted person at the end of the book.

Oscar award-winning make-up artist Howard Berger threw a Halloween party for fellow cast and crew of the Chronicles of Narnia film on Saturday.

Berger, from the US, tells CC he was feeling homesick and wanted to bring the American holiday to the Gold Coast with a party at Southport Bowls Club.

He says Halloween is one of his favourite holidays and he’s even more enthusiastic than his teenage kids.

“I phoned to ask them about Halloween and they were like ‘Dad, it’s not until tomorrow.’ I’m more excited about it than they are,” says Berger, who has worked on blockbusters Inglourious Basterds, The Bucket List and Transformers.

It’s no surprise he is a fan of Halloween as he’s been a make-up artist for the world’s biggest horror films.

As filming for Chronicles of Narnia wraps up on the Gold Coast in three weeks lead actor Ben Barnes says he is sad about leaving.

Barnes, at a Halloween party for fellow cast and crew of the Chronicles of Narnia film at the Southport Bowls Club on Saturday, says he has enjoyed his time on the Gold Coast and is not looking forward to returning home to the UK.

“The Gold Coast is beautiful,” he says.

Skandar Keynes, who celebrated Halloween with cast and crew on Saturday at the Southport Bowls Club, tells CC the Gold Coast gives him the heebie jeebies.

That, and ‘evil pumpkins.’

But Keynes failed to give CC an explanation as to why he finds our town petrifying.

“I don’t know,” he says jokingly.

Title: God in the Dock

Author: CS Lewis

Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company (October 1994)

ISBN-10: 0802808689

ISBN-13: 978-0802808684

Summary:

God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics, is a collection of essays written by CS Lewis over the course of his life that examine a wide range of issues, ranging from the ethical issue of vivisection, to the importance of mythology, to the celebration of Christmas, to the reading of old books, to the still divisive issue of women as clergy.

Review

God in the Dock is another discussion worthy collection of essays penned by CS Lewis. Much like Christian reflections, God in the Dock, and Of Other Worlds, was published posthumously by the Lewis Estates, collecting several of his essays that he wrote through out his life-time.

This book’s title comes from the eponymous essay, “God in the Dock”. The term comes from the courtroom usage of a trail. The Bench is where the judge sits, while the witness or person accused sits in the dock. In the essay, Lewis argues that in our day in age, we find ourselves examining God in the same way, wondering how a God who is good, and wonderful, and loving and merciful and compassionate can allow things like war , famine, disease, and poverty to exist.

It is certainly question that bears asking and that is the very same subject that many of these essays tackle. From essays on pain, to prayer, to the deity of Christ, to the incarnation, Lewis not only examines God and Christianity and touch ethical issues like vivisection. This book also features and essay looking at the issue of Priestesses in the church, written back in 1948, an issue that still remains a hot-button item in many churches as they debate the role of women in the church.

Well some of the essays aren’t’ nearly s divisive, there are three that deal with the subject of Christmas and commercialism, and one on the importance of reading of old books, they all offer some food for thought. A few of the essays are even written in a dialogue style similar to the works of Aristotle and Plato where a “teacher” is having a discussion with a “student”. Another satirical essay, “Xmas and Christmas” is written like a lost chapter from a book by the historian Herodotus on the celebration of Christmas in England and brilliantly shows the juxtaposition or the “commercial” holiday versus the “true” holiday.

Two other unique essays in this book are the “short bits” which is a collection of essays Lewis started but never completed, and a reprint of a discussion Sherwood E. Wirt of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, that looks at the claims of Christ, the importance of coming to him, space travel, and the then emerging Evangelical movement in America. The Discussion with Mr. Wirt also briefly highlights a meeting between CS Lewis and the Reverend Billy Graham and Lewis’s impressions of him.

Their certainly are some areas of controversy with this book. Perhaps the most controversial is that he also argues that mythology can help provide a good starting point for those who do not know Christ in his essay “The Grand Myth” as the myths contain many symbols that can point to Christ. Also he warns in his essay, “ The Dangers of National Repentance” that national repentance may actually be dangerous, as individuals may neglect to repent of their own personal sins and focus only on the much larger societal ills. In his essay on women clergy he also speaks out against the issue of having them serve in such a position. These areas of controversy are certainly helpful s it can get us honestly talking about such things.

While to some there is certainly plenty of material in this book that is covered in some of Lewis’s other works, these essays are merely the framework for them. By reading this we get a much fuller picture of some of Lewis’ ideas. Once again, Lewis perfectly demonstrates in God in the Dock just why it is he is the undisputed “arm-chair theologian” of the 20th century. His words in these essays are clear, concise, and still thought provoking and just as relevant today as they were when he first wrote them.

Big things are coming soon, but this is not part of that, just so you know. You’ll know it when you see it! Anyway, here’s the news.

PLAYING a cast of characters who routinely slip out of England and into the magical world of Narnia should make the British actors who recently finished filming at Cleveland Point accustomed to being away from home.

But they were delighted in the final days of filming to receive a care package from Birkdale couple Louise and Adrian Warner, who run Britain on the Bayside.

Louise took her two sons, Charlie, 8, and Thomas, 5, down to the set with the hamper of goodies, which they handed over to one of Narnia’s fawns.

“I’d been taking the kids down to the set fairly often to see it being built, and when we heard nearly all the cast and a lot of the crew were British, and that they still had filming to finish on the Gold Coast and in New Zealand, we thought they’d appreciate a few treats from home,” Louise said.

“We’ve since heard back that all the cast were thrilled with the hamper, and we referred a few of the directors and producers to The Vine bottle shop next to our store, because they import a whole range of British beers which we heard they were pining for.”

Louise said the hamper included some of their most popular items: Crisps, not chips; a soft drink called Vimto; British Cadbury’s chocolate, which has fewer emulsifiers than Australian Cadbury’s because of the cooler climate; Minstrels, a larger, non-coloured version of M&Ms; Crawfords custard creams and bourbon creams biscuits; and Party Ring biscuits, which are often worn on the fingers of children at birthday parties.

One of my favorite parts of going to movies is the soundtrack that accompanies the film. I’m a huge fan of music that not only compliments a movie, but enhances the film so much that, without it, the film would not be as effective. When it comes to the Narnia films so far, Lisbeth Scott’s vocals have been an ever present part of the experience, as the Pevensies enter Narnia, or on the journey to the Professor’s. She has a new album coming out, with a campaign to support a children’s charity. She also collaborated with composer Harry Gregson-Williams, whose music was present in the first two Narnia films.

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Lisbeth Scott’s new album, “Hope is a Thing,” will be released late November. The new album will be available for sale on iTunes, Amazon.com and in select stores nationwide. The disc features collaborations with well-known composers (Harry Gregson-Williams, Nathan Barr) as well as two stirring new covers (Imagine, Hallelujah). Distributed by BFM Digital, Inc., “Hope is a Thing” features two new music videos for the title track “Hope is a Thing” and “Good to Me” (originally from the 2008 film “Shutter”).

During this challenging economic time, Scott wanted to create a musical and visual collection that would remind people of the importance of hanging on to hopes and dreams and the simple, non-material things that open our hearts and bring us joy. Thus the music and video of “Hope Is a Thing” was born. Lisbeth also feels these concepts are often best demonstrated through innocent eyes, so along-side the album release comes the launch of an innovative web-based world-wide campaign featuring children of all backgrounds and ethnicities who express what it is they hope for in today’s world via the simple image of holding up a hand-created sign. The first phase of the campaign can be seen at www.hopeisathing.com, in the “Gallery” section. Over time, children and schools from all over are encouraged to upload their own photos to help boost the awareness of the campaign. A portion of proceeds will benefit the organization, Education Through Music.

Scott will be promoting her new album at several upcoming appearances: 10/17 at Yogaglo in Santa Monica, 10/19 for a concert in New York City for the premiere of Joe Pantoliano’s film, “No Kidding, Me Too!”, 11/7 and 11/8 for the official CD release parties in LA at the Edgemar Theater in Santa Monica. The 11/8 show is all ages and children are encouraged to bring their own “Hope” signs. 11/20 finds Scott in Northern California with a performance at Berkeley’s Rudramandir – a center for spirituality and healing.

For more information on Lisbeth Scott and to hear samples of her music, visit her official website www.lisbethscott.com.
While he was on campus, Devin Brown had the opportunity to ask him about Walden’s mission, where its name came from, and even what his favorite scene is. His response to these and other questions can be viewed in “An Interview with Micheal Flaherty” which has been posted at: Asbury.edu

Beloved Pictures has secured the film rights to C.S. Lewisʼs The Great Divorce. C.S. Lewis, the world-renowned Oxford/Cambridge scholar and best-selling author of works such as The Chronicles of Narnia and The Screwtape Letters, is regarded as one of the most profound writers of the twentieth century. The first two installments of seven in the Chronicles of Narnia film franchise (The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian), produced by Disney & Walden Media, have grossed $1.16 billion to date. Lewis was also the subject of the Academy Award-nominated, BAFTA-winning biopic, Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.

An adventure-laden tale in the vein of Lord of the Rings and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, The Great Divorce chronicles one man’s harrowing journey from the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Grey Town to the outskirts of heaven.

Beloved has attached David L. Cunningham, who helmed To End All Wars (Twentieth Century Fox), The Path to 9/11 (ABC), and Seeker: The Dark is Rising (Twentieth Century Fox/Walden Media), to direct. Michael Ludlum, Caleb Applegate and Robert Abramoff are all attached to produce. Bob Beltz, Special Advisor to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and the Academy Award-winning Ray, is attached as an Executive Producer. “We are tremendously excited to bring one of Lewisʼs most profound stories to the screen, and we have assembled an exceptionally strong team to achieve that end,” said Beloved CEO Michael Ludlum. “We believe that this story, much like The Chronicles of Narnia, will resonate with a global audience.”

Beloved is also developing the Garry Marshall feature, Dear Eleanor, and the Cinco Paul & Jon Hale scripted, Nora. Cunningham is represented by United Talent Agency.

More news and information on Beloved’s current projects, can be found on the company’s website, www.belovedpictures.com.
