Voyage of the Dawn Treader No Longer Shooting in Mexico
Wednesday, December 17th, 2008There has been more trouble getting The Voyage of the Dawn Treader going into production with rising violence in Mexico as of late. Scheduled to begin filming production at Baja Studios next month, presumably set building and pre-production, the drug war violence may have led Disney and Walden Media to begin a search for another location. Baja Studio is the home of the water tank that was used for Titanic and Master And Commander.
Word has it that the production may move down under, as film industry officials in NSW and Queensland are chasing the movie. The Sunshine State is favoured to win because of the water tank at Warner Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast. The Dawn Treader needs studios, beaches, jungles and other locations for a five-month shoot.
In the C.S. Lewis fantasy novel, Edmund, Lucy and their cousin Eustace return to the magical land of Narnia through a painting then set sail with King Caspian to find seven lost lords.
Briton Michael Apted, who made Amazing Grace, The World Is Not Enough and the Seven Up documentary series, is directing with returning roles for young Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley. Also back will be Ben Barnes, who was Prince Caspian in the last instalment.
The producers are known to have investigated Australia as a location before they settled on Mexico.
Australia hopes Giant Tank will attract Dawn Treader
Wednesday, February 21st, 2007The Queensland government hopes a giant outdoor water tank on the Gold Coast will attract a series of Hollywood blockbusters to the state.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said the $2.1 million tank at Warner Roadshow Studios, currently being used to film the Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey film, Fool’s Gold, would be a trump card for drawing other big-money blockbusters.
Mr Welford said the tank, which can house boats and marine life, allowed for large-scale under and above water filming and was the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and one of only a few worldwide.
The tank is 40 metres by 30 metres and varies in depth from two to five metres.
The government contributed $500,000 to the tank, which is also funded by Fool’s Gold production and Warner Roadshow Studios.
“The government’s Pacific Film and Television Commission and Warner Roadshow Studios are currently in negotiations with a number of major studios requiring water tank facilities for their next major films,” Mr Welford said.
He said projects that could be drawn to the state included the $100 million production Voyage of the Dawn Treader – the [third] in the Narnia Chronicles series.
Major productions to have used similar tanks include Titanic and Pirates of the Caribbean.
