Tour of Disney-Pixar and KNB EFX sheds light on Wall-E and Caspian

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

A recent press junket went to both Disney’s Pixar studio, and KNB EFX.  Both are places that I dream of one day visiting.  Who knows, perhaps I could supply some voices to some characters in a Pixar film.   And I generally look like a faun, so KNB EFX would just have to apply some horns, a curly wig and ears, and I’d be just about set before Special Effects.

KNB EFX is the company that provided all of the furry prosthetics and creatures for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

With both films arriving on Blu-ray and DVD, Disney decided to have a press junket that covered Wall-E and Prince Caspian at the same time.  The first stop was a visit to Pixar, who has made no bad film!  I love them all!  Get Wall-E!

Pixar was just day one.  Day two lead to KNB EFX.  Everyone took a short flight to Hollywood, and went for a rendezvous with Disney’s head of disc production at Burbank.

The looked at the new Circle-Vision Interactive feature, on the Prince Caspian Blu-ray Disc, that allows for 360-degree scene navigation.

Following the preview, the group of reporters was driven to KNB’s studios, where Greg Nicotero and his team created the costumes for Prince Caspian.

All in all, the efforts of the teams at both studios showed the variety of work that went into making two very different films.  But it also displayed the passion that both teams had for the work they are doing.  And that is what drives each them toward perfection in their work.

Prince Caspian DVD and Blu-ray Disc Release in October?

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I guess we’re better off just waiting for the official word from Walt Disney Home Entertainment. There’s a little bit of mis-information out there, and it’s primarily because someone misread the following:

Consumers who want to buy a Blu-ray player that supports BD-Live need to look for the “BD-Live” logo on the front of the machine.

Fannon said he expects the prices to drop over time as production meets demand and Hollis said he expects this technology to become standard in most new Blu-ray players by October.

Disney’s first BD-Live releases, Sleeping Beauty and Tinkerbell, will come out in October. Wall-E and Prince Caspian are in the pipeline but no release date has been set.

The only two BD-Live releases from Disney, in October, will be Sleeping Beauty and Tinkerbell. The article goes on to say that no release date has been set for Prince Caspian or Wall-E, though both are in the pipeline.

My guess would put Wall-E in November and Caspian in December.

Narnia sequel expected to be a summer smash

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The eagerly-awaited Narnia movie sequel from the series of children’s books written by Belfast-born author CS Lewis is set to be one of the blockbuster’s of the summer.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is due for release in the US next month where cinemas are already planning early screenings from midnight on Friday, May 16, to meet the expected demand.

The multi-million pound film — the follow-up to The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe — is scheduled for release in the UK in June.

The movie, featuring Ulster actor Liam Neeson as the voice of the godlike Aslan, is expected to be the box office smash of the summer, even out-stripping The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, which took an estimated $393m worldwide in 2005.

In the second of CS Lewis’ fantasy books to be made into a film, the four Pervensie children — Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy — return to Narnia to aid the young Prince Caspian in his struggle for the throne against his corrupt uncle King Miraz.

Caspian uses Susan’s magic horn that was left in Narnia to summon the four Pevensies to help him and a small army of Old Narnians reclaim his rightful throne.

Work on the script began before The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was released, so filming could begin before the actors grew too old for their parts.

Shooting began in February last year in New Zealand, but the majority of filming took place in Eastern Europe.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was originally scheduled for release in December last year but was postponed to allow special effects to be completed.

Michael McAdam, of Movie House Cinemas, said: “We are really looking forward to the new Narnia movie. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was hugely popular in Northern Ireland when it came out at Christmas in 2005 and many children saw it not just once, but two and three times.

Prince Caspian looks equally as good and of course, our own Liam Neeson provides the voice of Aslan.

“It’s brilliant to see some family films coming into the cinema for early as it has been a really quiet April for kids’ films.

“We kick off the busy season with the fourth Indiana Jones movie on May 22, then Narnia is out on June 26. But the summer families can also look forward to King Fu Panda, Disney’s WALL-E, the new Batman movie The Dark Knight and the Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon. It looks like a great summer at the cinema.”

Super Bowl Prince Caspian Commercial

Friday, February 1st, 2008

The LA Times has us on the look-out for two commercials from Disney. Look for the studio to run two spots for high-profile summer releases. May 16’s fantasy sequel “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” will receive one of the Super Bowl slots, with June 27’s “Wall-E,” the next animated Pixar film, getting the other position.

There’s no word on whether or not it’ll be a shorter version of the theatrical trailer or something new. Let’s hope that we can see a shot of Reepicheep in action! We’ll try to get the video up shortly after the commercial airs. Keep watching this site!
